Lisa Bender crushes Meg Tuthill

meglisa5602.jpg
In the span of one month, Bender (right) gave birth to a daughter and won a City Council race.
Meg Tuthill had the Star Tribune's endorsement and Lisa Bender took some heat from yours truly for having a tacky campaign headquarters.

But in the end, Bender, the DFL-endorsed candidate, had more than enough support from 10th Ward voters to cruise to a victory over Tuthill.

Bender received 64 percent of first-choice votes, which amounted to more than twice as many as Tuthill received (3,704 to 1,732 respectively).

All in all, three City Council incumbents were defeated -- Robert Lilligren, Tuthill, and Diane Hofstede (Jacob Frey beat her easily). Furthermore, since Don Samuels, Sandy Colvin Roy, and apparent mayor-to-be Betsy Hodges vacated their seats, that means six seven of the council's 13 seats will change hands as a result of yesterday's election. (CORRECTION: As commenter catiyas points out below, Gary Schiff also vacated his seat, so more than half of the council will soon consist of new members.)

This job is a 60=70 hour a week job. And the first few years is really learning the ropes. As a former elected official, the learning curve and time commitment is really great especially the first few years. Lisa has a supportive husband and I am sure that will help. Just saying it will be a big adjustment to daily life.

I disagreed with the Viking Stadium vote. Not a fan of Wilf. But I can not be a one issue voter when it comes to local politics. The Vikings decision will not as adversely effect us as slum landlords and ex-con antics to get their way, because when they force people to live in sub standard dwellings and do not take care of their properties we are all diminished. I hope Lisa stands up to Sabri and his fellow scumbag land lords as Meg did.

No kitty, I never said that. I'm just sharing my experience of how much time is needed to be a parent.

Because she's a mother she can't be a Councilperson?

The City will continue to shrink anyway.    One look at property Taxes and the regulatory bureaucracy and the burbs will continue to grow and take away residents, which has been happening slowly over the last 50 years anyway.    What we have here is just on Liberal Progressive trading for another.    Good luck Urban dwellers, enjoy the high rent and taxes!

Meg was a decent, hard working Council Member who just didn't fit with her Ward.  She'd be a terrific Council Member for Ward 11 or 12.

Thank you Meg for all your work, leadership and incredible good work. You will not be easily replaced. It will be a rough ride for the tenth for the next few years.

Meg has been a community oriented person and worked her butt off for the 10th ward and the city for 40 years. I wish the best for Lisa Bender, but there will be a long time of getting up to speed on the ins and outs of city government. She had support from slum landlords, and convicted felon Basim Sabri. Former city council members were brought down due to their association to this scumbag. But that was before Lisa lived here. We all better keep a close on that relationship. And the no drinking thing, people live in this area, there has to be some melding of minds and needs between the businesses and the dene population here in the tenth.

As being a dad to a 3 and 13 year old; I find it challenging enough to not try and represent the area that has the most going on. I hope she has the support she needs.

Gary Schiff also vacated his Ward 9 seat, so that's a flip of 7 council members.

@kurt124 All those condos that went up during the recession. Yeah, nobody lives in any of them. No, I don't like those condos, but it's still a point to you being wrong per usual.

Grow up ya fucking loser.

@kurt124 Really? Then you haven't heard of the massive influx of residents to downtown, Uptown, the U, Hiawatha Ave., etc. Pull your head out of your ass and look at all the new construction projects around Minneapolis - these are condos and rental units that generally sell as fast as they can build them. People are willing to pay a little extra to live somewhere really nice, with a lot of amenities around them.  P.S. How the fuck do you get up in the morning everyday with such a pissy negative view towards everything in life? (I'm getting that from this and your other negative, racist, homophobic posts on this site.)

@freealonzo1 Bite me! She needs to go home and soak her feet, and hopefully never run for office again. She has always been a power hungry fuddy-duddy.

@freealonzo1 She would not be a terrific Council Member for Ward 12.  Yipes.

@Audrey Johnson Maybe if Meg hadn't been so rude to some of her constituents, I'd have voted for her instead of Lisa. I'm sure Lisa Bender will do a great job for the 10th!

You assume that Lisa associated herself with a slumlord and that it was not just a slumlord trying to seem relevant by supporting who was the likely winner and already disliked the incumbent. You are manufacturing fear. Lisa had huge support from a diverse base and that is why she won EVERY precinct, including East Calhoun and Meg's longtime home precinct

@catiyas Thanks for pointing that out. I've added a correction.
