Mark Dayton on meager charitable giving: "I'm disappointed in myself"

On the eve of Give to the Max Day, Mark Dayton's 2012 tax returns made for unfortunate headlines -- he earned $343,234 last year, but donated only $1,000 to charity.

Asked yesterday about his 2012 giving (or lack thereof), Dayton went the self-flagellation route.

"I pride myself on my charitable giving and I'm disappointed in myself," Dayton said during a news conference (via the Star Tribune). "I totaled it up and noticed I had fallen off, so I will remedy that."

Considering he donated nearly $27,000 to charity back in 2009 (while he was running for governor), we'd imagine local charities and nonprofits are salivating about the news that Dayton plans to step up his giving during this tax cycle.

He said he would do better next year. What's keeping him from further donating THIS year. You'll still get the tax write-off. LAME!

Wonder if he will ever answer why he really wanted the new Vikes stadium where it is going to be. He and his family will make millions on that. And NO one seems to care.

Get rid of the little rich boy he needs to ask the police about medical marijuana. Does he consult doctors about law enforcement also? Try the prople that elected him , how about asking them ?

Gov. Dayton has devoted his entire life to service to the people of Minnesota. It's not just about writing a check, folks.

Seems like everybody is raising money for a cause lately.

All politicians should work on a voluntary basis, and it should be a set term limit. Also, it should be illegal for them to transition to becoming a corporate lobbyist.

A lot of stone throwers out there. I'm sure the guy feels bad but it's not that big of a deal. Even if he is a public figure, not sure everyone who makes 300k is donating $100, let alone $1000 to charity.

Must be tough to be as virtuous as the people seem to expect.

Give us what we really want. A resignation!

my daughter was once on the receiving end of his giving, his heart is in the right place even if different amounts among different years are not up to others judgement.

As long as he's in the giving mood, I could use a couple of bucks...

Maybe everyone should calm down. He gave a bunch last year and probably will again next year. Not everyone can be as perfect and "on" all the time as all of you. Yeezus.

He can make himself feel a lot better by giving to Lakeville Friends of the Environment, a group so small and committed we have no 501c3 status. So in essence no money back but you would be supporting environmental action and education in the south metro.

Prime example that the "poor" are more generous than the rich.

Ya I am annoyed. I made 23k last year yet I donated $2080. So much for the lead by example theory.

Total elitist attitude from this guy. He would not have said anything if he did not get caught. What happened to splitting all of your hard earned money with the people who don't, won't or can't work?

It's concerning, but not in evaluating him as a governor. If they had something to complain about regarding his governorship, we wouldn't be talking about this.

@John Doyle Too bad he hasn't. He's only said he's against rapists but will not get involved directly in the process.

Get ready to welcome serial rapists to your community in the near future.

J.reiter is a nice guy. I would've called anybody who couldn't wrap their head around that a retard. Probably remind them that people who can't comprehend that have no business voting either.

The difference is that Mark Dayton's political position is that people do not give enough to support their community and in order to rectify the lack of giving, taxes must be increased.

How can he claim everyone else has too much extra and should give it away (to the government) when he himself does not give more to the community than is legally required?

@corypsky Yeah, this story shows Dayton is honest because he released his tax returns even though his political opponents would latch onto stupid nonsense to yell about.   It also shows the entire world what a bunch of stupid assholes Republicans are because they are going after Dayton for this but are too stupid to remember that Mitt Romney didn't even bother to release his tax returns.   Like all stupid Republicans you think everyone is as dumb as you are but we can actually remember this thing called "the past."   We realize that phony idiot liars like you aren't actually upset about the lack of giving, you just want something to yell at Dayton about.  Since Dayton is doing a good job as governor and most of Minnesota disagrees with Republican political ideas this is the best you can do.  Just shows how weak and stupid Republicans have gotten.  People like you are why Republicans are ridiculed.
