Around 4 a.m. Sunday, a 20-year-old University of St. Thomas student named Charlie was watching TV in his Merriam Park residence when he heard a loud pop.

Charlie felt a burn and saw that his wrist had been bloodied. Shortly thereafter, he noticed his bottle of Gatorade was leaking. Upon inspection, he saw that the bottle had been punctured by a bullet that had apparently penetrated the wall of his residence, the Star Tribune reports (Charlie asked the Strib to withhold his last name from publication).

An MPR report details the chain of events that culminated in Charlie getting grazed by a bullet (his injuries didn't warrant hospitalization, though the Strib notes that his arm was bandaged when a reporter talked to him yesterday):
Police say they were called to a suspected church burglary about 4 a.m. [Sunday] morning and officers saw a suspicious car leaving the area, near the 1700 block of Dayton Ave.

Two St. Paul Police followed in a marked squad and saw a passenger get out of the car and flee on foot. A St. Paul sergeant has told investigators that he believed the suspect was carrying a handgun, and the officer fired multiple times.

The suspect was hit at least once and taken to Regions Hospital, where police said he was in critical condition. "We're not going to elaborate on the injuries at this time," said police spokesman Paul Paulos.

An occupant of a nearby home was also injured. Police say a man reported being grazed by a bullet believed to have been fired during the incident. "We don't know whether it came from the suspect or the officer's handgun," Paulos said.
The person driving the car the suspect hopped out of left the scene, unapprehended. The officer involved in the shooting suffered a knee injury during the chase and was placed on standard three-day administrative leave.

During a visit from a Star Tribune reporter, another resident living near the intersection of Wheeler Street and Dayton Avenue pointed out about a half-dozen bullet holes in his garage that resulted from the Sunday-morning shooting. That resident, Brian Dalton, said the gunshots caused his two young children to wake up and start crying.

If it indeed is the case that police fired the shots that struck Charlie and his garage, "I would say possibly [officers] should have been more cautious," Dalton told the Strib.

Paulus, the St. Paul PD spokesman, told the Strib he "believes" the as-of-yet-unnamed suspect was found with a gun, but it's unclear whether he fired it at any point during the Sunday-morning incident.

Nice sensationalistic headline CP blog! You guys are going FOX News on this one. Cop MAY have shot student. WOW WHAT A SCOOP. No real supporting facts. Just trying to get first fault. You guys have such great stories and early incite usually. Usually you guys are better at read between the lines journalism and this 10 sec soundbite of an article is way beneath you. Step it up and dont go all TMZ on shit. Remember its how you say it that can lend credibility to your journalistic point of view (previous sentence should be an oxymoron but no one seems to care about integrity anymore) Shame on you.

"The car the suspect got out of drove away from the scene unapprehended." I'm glad the car was not arrested and was free to go. Or did you mean, "The person driving the car that the suspect got out of..."

"More people are hurt at the hand of police than they are saving" Are you fucking kidding me? That is just an ignorant statement. And if your little story is true, what have you done about it? I'm going to guess nothing.

Katie what about when you find yourself in an emergency life threatening situation that is caused by police? Then what? It's happened to me. That's why I avoid Alary's. Far too long there's been a tradition of drunken Irish cops who can do whatever they want, including drinking at the station and overall corruption. I watched a couple of them savagely beat some kid just because he was there and they were looking for a fight. When more and more people are hurt at the hand of police than they are saving, something is wrong. I hope the irony is not lost on you.

Hard to believe it was an accident. They're suppose to be professional. Such a sad story.

Cops are human too. So unless you've been in a situation where you've had to use deadly force, or wear a badge then you really cannot speculate on this. There's no facts really. I bet I the asshole was in your house robbing you or robbing you at gunpoint your liberal asses talking all this shit would be singing a different tune.

I wonder what "believed to be carrying a handgun" means.  If someone is running away from you, having a handgun in their pocket does not mean you have permission to shoot them.

A cop saved the life of my friend's kid. A cop also tazed my sister's boyfriend for talking loudly and arrested her when she screamed in terror and ran to his flopping body. Point is, sometimes cops do good and sometimes they terrorize the neighborhood. I don't understand pretending like they never go mad with power and only do good.

I heard about this via my st Thomas email....Aaron I think you are on to something....

You know what would have prevented this? More guns. Maybe if the student had a gun he could have protected himself. Or is that not how it works?

For everyone who talks shit about police officers, I think that if you ever find yourself in an emergency or life threatening situation, you should not be allowed to call them for help. These people risk their lives everyday to protect people they don't know. Maybe you should think about that for a moment.

Accident my ass. Just cause of badge doesn't mean u got authority to just pull the trigger. Self control??

I'd like to think the police officer will be held accountable for his actions but it's unlikely :\

Can someone please explain the difference between our military, our police, and our well-armed militia? It seems that we really don't need one of these...I'm looking at you, trigger-happy cops! Have some control. Geez.

So, they didn't apprehend the car? Did it fly away ala Harry Potter?

@Devilsd Ictionary Okay, seriously, only the Irish Am cops are drunks, bigot much?  And it's a traditon, really?  Like they celebrate it with an empty bottle tree every year, and stumble about singing Danny Boy?  Like no German or Norwegian cop has ever got a snoot full and boxed it up with anyone.  Good bloody grief.  I am not a big fan of St. Paul cops either, not defending them here, but can you please stick to disparaging the PO PO and not my heritage? thank you very much and top of the morning to ya...

@Everyday Normal Guy What if he was robbing one of your conservative asses? What difference would that make? If a cop is going to shoot his gun, he should have the common sense and training not to shoot innocent bystanders. Asshole.

It's things like this that make me not call the cops. I live in a high crime neighborhood, my neighbors are mostly brown folks and I don't want to be responsible for an innocent person being shot to death or getting beaten because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time

@Katie Johnson they really dont risk their lives...come on

they act like pussies and use sheer numbers to scare and control

many cops are clearly on steroids. this makes them dumb and angry.

stop sympathizing with these losers, they are desperate for power. they need to be abolished

@PatScott are you some dumb cop? you are denying steroid use in law enforcement? That makes you super ignorant. I would say i am perceptive for connecting the dots.

people who use steroids are dumb, steroids make them angry.

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@PatScott why not admit that you are a cop? why not fess up?

there are no other occupations that require physical prowess that are rampant with steroid use. sports is not occupation for the masses so dont try to use that/

just the way you from sentences and the words you use, its clear you support the crooked establishment and are either some ex military dickhead or a filthy pig in blue

day laborers dont use PEDs, cops for sure use PEDs because they are desperate for power

PatScott
PatScott

@digitalprotocol @PatScott There is steroid use in all fields that require a degree of physical prowess. There is far less in law enforcement than in others due to testing protocols. And you are clearly angry and dumb, are you a juicer?

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@PatScott you've already lost, exposing yourself as either a fat cop or some cop sympathizer makes others laugh at you.

so again, you deny the heavy use of steroids within the law enforcement community?

PatScott
PatScott

@digitalprotocol @PatScott Ooooooh, that really hurts! I would engage you in a battle of wits but you are clearly unarmed in that respect. I hope you don't eat with that mouth you nitwit.
