Twins are more popular than Vikings, survey says

The Twins have stunk for longer than the Vikes, but they appear to have more diehard fans.
Sure, both the Twins and the Vikings stink right now, but if the latest Public Policy Polling survey of Minnesota can be believed, fans have been more loyal to the Twins through their struggles than they have been to the Purple.

PPP surveyed nearly 900 Minnesota voters between October 27 and 29. Two of the questions asked were "Are you a Vikings fan?" and "Are you a Twins fan?"

Sixty-six percent of respondents said they are indeed Twins fans, including 71 percent of Democrats, 62 percent of Republicans, 64 percent of women, and 68 percent of men.

On the other hand, 57 percent of respondents said they are Vikings fans, including 62 percent of Democrats, just 51 percent of Republicans, 53 percent of women, and 62 percent of men.

Our takeaway? Since such a relatively low percentage of Republicans are Vikings fans, it seems likely GOPers are particularly upset about the sweetheart stadium deal lawmakers gave Zygi Wilf, doesn't it? Either that, or maybe they're just really fed up with Christian Ponder.

It's nice that Aaron covered this survey at all, I guess. But the sports questions were just part of a survey about the 2014 race for the Senate and Governor's offices. It establishes a base-line to compare trends against as we move into the campaign. As it stands now, Franken and Dayton look well-situated, and the Republican challengers have pretty low name recognition.

More interesting to me, though, is that the State has become less conservative over the past six months. Back in May, 18% of Minnesotans described themselves as "very conservative. Now, it's 15%. It's hardly surprising, then, that the percentage describing themselves as "somewhat conservative" went up 3%. Voters are moving from "very conservative" to "somewhat conservative", and there was also a two-point shift from "moderate" to "somewhat liberal". These are small changes, but it's only been six months.

900 people is one hell of a survey. Keep up the hard work city pages. Next

Twins. Go Cowboys! Easy win coming this Sunday!

This isn't a surprise. You have 81 Home games at often cheaper prices than the Vikings 8* Home games are higher prices. Price may not be the only factor, but it should be a factor.

Ummm. I just moved back to the Twin Cities from Boston (city of champions) so I'm in total denial about the state of the sports teams here. Yikes!!

Um, hello? What about the Wild? This is the state of hockey after all.

It's hard to be a fan of either considering they're among the worst in their respective sports.

What does being a Democrat or Republican have to do with your choice of the Twins or the Vikings? And it should be the only Championship team in this town, The Lynx!

What happens if we add the Packers to this "study"?

Vikings, and it's not even close. The Twins' ownership does not care about winning.

@Nick Wimperis Actually, 900 people is a very good sample size, especially for a state. It would be a respectable sample size for a national poll. PPP nailed the Presidential race with samples sizes from 900 to 1000. Even more impressive is that they did it by only using land-lines.

I'm guessing that you don't understand statistics and math, but 900 is overkill if your sample demographic is representative. And PPP's track record proves that their samples are quite good.

You don't have to poll *everyone* to accurate results.

Also, CityPages didn't commission this survey. PPP did it for free, as they do with most of their public polling.

@Adam Mikelson The Vikings are one of the most successful NFL teams, if you don't count Super Bowl victories.

@Audrey Johnson Because CityPages didn't have *anything* to do with the poll. Rupar is just picking up their survey results.

PPP does an immense amount of polling for free. The sports questions were just a part of a survey that covered the Senate and Governor's races. Maybe you should pay for a poll that covers the things you want to know, instead of bitching about the work that other people do for free.

@Audrey Johnson Because the Lynx are nowhere near as popular.

@Branden Strot I agree, appliances are much more exciting.

@Keith Morioka It was part of a survey that covered the Senate and gubernatorial races, so it was pretty easy to correlate the political affiliation of the respondents with their team preference. PPP did it because it was easy, not because it was particularly relevant.

The survey was *already* 31 questions long. Since it's possible to be both a Twins fan *and* a Vikings fan, each team would require a specific question. If surveys get to be too long, people hang up, and you lose good respondents in your sample.

@Tyler Chip Moody Suter Every sports team owner cares about winning, because winning makes money.

@Jessica Laing-Flaaten Minnesota Public Radio is not a sports team.
