Will Target match Walmart's great deal for Thanksgiving workers?

Today, Walmart made its long-awaited announcement about its "Black Friday" hours. We put that in quotations because these days, major retailers are mostly opening on Thanksgiving itself, and Walmart is no exception -- both it and Best Buy are opening at 6 p.m. that day and staying open all night long.

For its part, Target is opening at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, one hour earlier than it opened last year. The two hour gap between Target and Walmart might not seem like much, but it could be the difference between having enough time to enjoy a holiday meal with friends and family and having to skip it and hurry into work. However, Walmart is making working on the holiday a little less depressing by offering some impressive bonuses for employees who have to come in on Turkey Day.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
But to soften the blow for its estimated 1 million employees who have to work on Thursday, Nov. 28, the world's largest retailer is going to feed them a traditional Thanksgiving dinner during their shift, give them an extra day's pay, and offer them 25 percent off a future holiday shopping trip.

Calling Walmart employees "a critical component of our success throughout the year," Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising and marketing officer for Walmart U.S., said Monday that Walmart will reward their hard work in ways it hasn't done before.
Walmart's announcement makes us wonder -- will Target step up and offer its Thanksgiving-working employees a similarly sweet package of perks? Or in this case, will it let Walmart flip the script and score points for treating its employees decently for a change?

Since when does Target treat their employees "decently"/any better than Walmart?

Get your info right author. The Target stores in my area were closed until 8pm Thanksgiving Day, while Walmart never closed. Walmart started their special sales at 6pm but they were never closed at all Thanksgiving Day.

Most other people working today will automatically get time and a half or double time, unless they are wait staff.

Walmart's "extra day of pay" will only be given to employees that worked thanksgiving and the next 2 days. How many people do you think they will schedule for those 3 days in a row?

From my friends that work for Target and my mother retired from them they are not very nice to there worker bees.

I worked today, suck it up. you know you're in for holiday madness when you work a retail job, it's been the case for a very long time. don't support the lame companies that are open on thanksgiving.

Time and a half and holiday pay for those working today. That is what corporate was told the stores were being paid. Overnight workers get overnight compensation as well.

Why don't people just get a new job if they don't like their current one??? Fuck. Our grandparents and great grandparents didn't bitch about working during the Great Depression. They were happy to have a damn job to feed and provide for their damn family. Jeez I'm sick of everyone's entitled bitching.

3x their hourly rate? What are you smoking? I am fairly certain I will be making time and a half. If this is true it will be the first time I am hearing about it and I am surprised that management hasn't been pushing this fact, at all, in an attempt to avoid call-ins/no-shows. At least they will be providing meat/cheese trays and buns for nutrients, and tomorrow we get to enjoy the lovely taste of catered Dominoes Pizza!

Will every company that is requiring people to work today match it? I know it's fun to pick on the big box stores, but the reality is a lot of people have to work today, and no one says anything about "boycotting" those companies...just sayin..

Maybe not but hourly Target employees get 3x their rate for working today on top of treating them decently the rest of the year and not just one day.

How stupid are you Aaron? Do you really have no idea what separates these companies. Boo hiss CP why do endorse such ridiculous content.

Ahh, that's so sweet of Walmart - taking some of the surplus value that the workers created and giving it back to them for the holidays.

Walmart's deal isn't great. They cut workers hours the week before the holiday in anticipation of paying them less on Thanksgiving. What happened to time and a half holiday pay?

Jason McCain

Target and Walmart could afford to be closed on those 2 holidays.

Or... or they could not open on Thanksgiving and still pay the workers. Just a thought.

Great deal? Does that mean they've changed their minds and will be closed on Thanksgiving? Otherwise, it's still a crap deal for the workers. Nice effort though.

I truly feel sorry for anybody with nothing better to do on THANKSGIVING and the wee early hours following than to go out and spend money on "great deals."

Holiday pay should be standard for workers, not used as a PR stunt for wal-mart in an attempt to offset their terrible reputation in worker relations

Maybe the whole world should pause for another lame holiday... If you don't want to work on holidays go to school, quit your job, find a sugar daddy...

TONS of people work Thanksgiving ... Including myself at Macy's. Nobody seems to care that Twin Cities' Macy's employees have to cut their holiday short to deal with shoppers and corporate greed. We get no "perks" for working that day - nor do we get a choice.

Yes. I work for REI and we are provided with lunch or dinner on busy weekends leading up to the holidays. Aside from being a great place to work the rest of the year, REI takes extra good care of their employees during this really busy time.

Nope, I think they should merely provide a living wage. If they want to go above and beyond that, great.

People are greedy, money talks. If a store is going to turn a profit of course they will be open. The people who shop on Black Friday and Thursday act like MONKEYS. They are rude and push and throw. Holiday spirit huh? Congrats you look like an asshole. As far as some of these people choosing to work retail, yes I chose retail. I am damn good at what I do. But the fact that you wait until one day to shop makes you very selfish. "Oh I saved all this extra money... " You also cut your holiday short. Your family time. Quality time spending. You have 365 days to shop. I would love to have Black Friday on ANY OTHER day if it just meant another work day. Instead it's starting on Thursday, and that takes one more tradition away from retail workers. We can all quit, sure, but then you would have new competition for YOUR job. And no where for YOU to shop, because everything has closed.

Joshua Warren
Joshua Warren

Yeah they should have an option of not working, and if they choose to, they should be paid at least time and a half

WatusiJenkins

Also, from what I understand, working these holidays are voluntary. They are not forced to work them. This is why these retailers hire seasonal staff just for this reason.

im not into buying shit... sadly the people rushing to spend have the least to spend and are easily controlled by BS loss leader sales.

People shopping selfish? Umm this doesn't make sense. I don't shop on black Friday, thanksgiving, or any other random sale where people maul eachother for savings. But you know what? I could care less if other people do. Listen to your rant about other people's shopping habits. Who cares how and when other people shop. It doesn't affect you. And if you say it does affect you because you chose to work retail at a place willing to be open on Thanksgiving...well then that's a BS excuse. Don't work there then.

sorenson.tiffmarie
sorenson.tiffmarie

@Oscar It clearly does affect her, and other retail workers...........who really have no option other than to work and miss out on time with their families. ...and to say, "Don't work there then" is ignorant.......sounds like mighty words from someone up in the corporate ivory tower. A job is a job and not everyone gets to be  selective about where they work

Oscar
Oscar

PS I have a corporate job and I have been told that i must work christmas eve. I cant get if off if i tried. Boo f'ing hoo. If you dont want to work then dont work.

sorenson.tiffmarie
sorenson.tiffmarie

@Oscar she may have, but many others choose not to. That's a pretty bold comparison.....

Also, as someone who worked in retail for years, I can tell you traffic may be higher after 5 o clock, but the majority of spending, large single purchases in particluar, take place during the 9-5 hours. Those housewives have to do something all day.......

Oscar
Oscar

She clearly states she chose retail. Retail stores make more money when 9-5ers are not working, such as holidays and weekends. It's the nature of the business she chose!!

It's like being a priest but then bitching you have to work Sundays.
