City Pages blogger robbed in skyway

SkywayRobberyMap.jpg
The robbery occurred in the stretch of skyway crossing LaSalle shown in this map.
Around 6:30 p.m. last night, I was standing in a deserted stretch of skyway above LaSalle Avenue between 9th Street South and 10th Street South talking on the phone with my dad when two male African-Americans who appeared to be roughly between the ages of 16 and 20 walked past me toward the downtown Target store.

I thought absolutely nothing of it until about 30 seconds later, when the two approached me again from the other direction. One of them told me to "empty your pockets" as it dawned on me I was being robbed.

With my dad still on the line, I instinctively handed over my phone. Then, the same suspect, with one of his hands in his windbreaker, said, "What else you got? Give me your wallet. Give it to me or I'll pop you." I reached into my pocket and unthinkingly did as asked, and as soon as I did the two turned and took off toward Target.

The entire altercation probably took no more than 20 seconds, during which time there wasn't another person in sight. Walking back toward LaSalle Plaza in a haze, I didn't see anybody else until I was in the vicinity of the Art Institutes International.

Both suspects are thin and roughly 5'10' tall. The one who threatened to "pop" me had highlighted dreadlocks that came down just below his ears and was wearing a dark windbreaker. The other had buzzed hair and I seem to recall him wearing a flannel shirt, though the whole thing happened so quickly and unexpectedly that my recollections aren't very vivid.

After I got home, I called the 1st Precinct and filed a police report. The officer I spoke with said it was likely the robbery was captured on skyway security cameras.

The incident number is 13-407984.

They were just trying to help you out by forcibly dismantling your White Privilege for you, Aaron.

Better catch those idiots in downtown and UofM campus - we can all help when in those areas. There are a few thugs but many more of us. Don't walk alone and don't take out your phone... take out your mace

I am sorry about your experience, Aaron, but glad to see you were not physically harmed. I hope you recover your property and that these crooks go to prison for a very long time.

I say this without schadenfreude, but please at least consider re-evaluating some of your views on self-defense and the causes of crime. It is you who was the victim. Your assailants are not victims of you, the white man, or society at large. People choose to do evil for their own benefit, not out of force or desperation.

Please be careful in the future. Watch your surroundings. Carry some pepper spray. And if you see a couple of black males coming your way, give them a wide berth

Hopefully, they'll get some good security footage and nail these pieces of garbage.  A good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings - especially on the phone. Personally, I'd have followed them at a distance hoping to pass a cop, asking anyone else I saw to please call 911. Might have had a chnace to catch them red-handed.

The comments here are terrible. No one deserves something like this happening to them - what would possess any of you to say someone does? Granted, the article in and of itself is not news-worthy, and if anything, could have served as an intro into a longer investigative piece about downtown crime, statistics, personal preventative measures, and a call for more on-foot patrols during evening hours. But no, these comments are largely unwarranted and extremely ignorant.

These robbers scope out the downtown area and the light rails looking for anyone who is alone and/or vulnerable using a smartphone. That's what they want more than anything. They resell the phones for money/drugs, etc. The phones are a hot commodity. The smart thing is to NEVER have your phone out when you are walking alone downtown (especially at night) or sitting alone on the light rail. Keep it concealed unless absolutely necessary. Because it's the holidays these criminals are even more prevalent. Unfortunately there are not enough police on patrol to catch most of them due to cutbacks. We'd still have more retail stores downtown Minneapolis if there was a far better police presence.

This is unusual especially for that stretch of skyway. Quit freaking out, people.

Read a book on conceal and carry and you discover just the idea that I have a gun to be a huge deterrent. And given that MN is an open carry state? I see two hooligans for the second time? My coat gets drawn back. 99% of the time, they turn around.

Also, what ever happened to protecting yourself with your hands? Does it always have to be a gun? Learn some self defence people, and quit being chumps!

It might just be me, but there were only 2 people. No weapons drawn. Im not handing shit over to them. I would probably run before handing anything away because of some "tough" words. Maybe punch one in the nose as I run past. No weapon, i'm not scared until there's a 3rd or 4th person. Imo, if they had a weapon, he would have seen it.

I don't know if its the same mofo but I've seen the skinny kid with short highlighted dreadlocks rob a woman's phone off the light rail and the same kid again slipping a ski mask on with a group of people in the middle of the day (in summer) and heading somewhere fast. I've said something to police both times. I wonder if its the same guy

This type of behavior is the result of a system that has failed a large amount of its citizens. Some of these street smart people have felonies, can never get an honest job or change their life around because of it on their record. They are slip back into this kind of violent lifestyle to survive....not that it's an excuse, but it's a reason for sure. And There are NOT enough people to patrol everywhere to watch out for these so called "thugs". And go ahead and carry a gun, it's your right, but what makes you think they won't pull out there's faster? Or just "pop" you the minute they feel or see your weapon? Just my thoughts. Sorry to hear about the robbing- it's a core shaker for sure. Hope justice prevails for ALL

Use this incident and your publication as a spring board to demand more foot patrols and a tougher stance on those thugs that are giving Minneapolis the reputation of being a shit-hole.

WRONG!

At best, you've painted yourself as a gun-toting idiot that would sooner flash it than use it.  Next time, they'll be prepared since they know they can get a ~$400-600 piece off of you.

At worst, you've given them time to draw their own.

Keep it hidden until you're ready to use it.  Don't 'flash' it EVER, unless you're on your way to the draw.  Then get a bead on them as fast as possible and pull the trigger if they make you.

He should have just said to them, "Look, guys, I'm on your side. Don't rob me. I'm not racist. I voted for Obama. Twice."

But seriously, I'm glad Rupar didn't get hurt. No one deserves to be a victim of crime. But, the grave mistake that Rupar made was when he saw two AA males "between the ages of 16 and 20" walking by him and "thought nothing about it" (especially in what I assume was an empty skyway).

In a situation like that, you keep your eyes on them and do not just turn away. Give them the defensive "evil eye" look which ghetto thugs usually interpret as "don't fuck with me." I bet if he would have done that, he would still have his phone and his wallet.

Fuck political correctness.

@digitalprotocol

Really?  Where'd you get your training to have such a keen eye?  Because I've talked to cops that don't know I'm carrying unless I inform them.

digitalprotocol

@_Joe_ flashlights and guns are not comparable. a flashlight enhances the sense of sight. a gun enhances nothing.

nice BS NRA talking point

we live in a civilized society, try harder with yur imagination than thinking of robberies and violent crime. We are more advanced than that.

bottom line is if you carry a gun everywhere and feel you need it... you live in fear and are controlled and motivated by fear.

you are a huge pussy and your gun only makes your pussy even bigger.

@digitalprotocol

Laws are there to protect us huh?  Next time you're getting robbed, make sure to inform your assailant that they are breaking the law.  That oughta do it.

And if it doesn't, you can always karate-chop everybody.  That should do the trick.

digitalprotocol

@_Joe_ to the trained eye, its not hard to tell who may have a weapon on them. not just the bulge but other body language

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@_Joe_ you live in a civilized nation. those who are educated know this. we have laws to protect us from savagery. you are only promoting savagery by feeling the need to have a weapon on your hip.

so sick that you walk day in day out with the power of life and death in your hand. you dont deserve that power.

you dont need that power. how has it ever benefited you?

your stupid NRA flashlight talking point makes no sense. a flashlight enhances your sense of sight.

your gun doesnt enhance anything except your level of fear. its clear you live in fear. if you didnt, you wouldnt carry a weapon. you imagine about robberies and violent crimes. try imagining something better than the status quo and strive towards that. dont limit yourself to the simple views of life that dominate the majority of americans.

you can do better

_Joe_

@digitalprotocol

Oh boy, here we go with the whole 'fear' thing.  It's not about fear dipshit.  It's just about being prepared for eventualities.

I don't keep fresh batteries in my flashlights because I'm afraid of the dark.  I do it because sometimes the power goes out, and it's nice to be able to see.

Simple preparedness.

George Zimmerman was an asshole that hunted himself a black teenager.  What's your point?  That everyone with a gun is exactly like that?

I'm afraid you're going to have to try harder than that.

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@_Joe_ that makes you a huge pussy if you take your gun everywhere you go.

ever heard of george zimmerman. or the guy who shot his granddaughter.

if you need a gun to feel safe you live in fear and are a pussy.

fear propagates fear

@digitalprotocol

Clearly you know nothing about this topic.  First of all, there are WAY more people carrying than you could even imagine.  I am willing to bet you pass someone carrying on a daily basis.  99.99999999% of us have never (thankfully) had to use our guns for defense.

So where's all the massacres and shootouts that we're all supposed to be responsible for?

Next time you're getting robbed, feel free to discuss your difference of opinions with your attackers.  I'm sure you'll be able to resolve your differences and come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

Me?  I'll keep carrying my gun, thanks.

digitalprotocol
digitalprotocol topcommenter

@_Joe_ pretty close to advocating gun violence, i would say. You are not wrong, that charles bronson mentality is likely the best to have. Yet, this isnt the wild west and people need to move away from using guns to solve problems. its very uncouth.

I am not against carrying weapons if you truly require them; however, scared people who must have a weapon at all times are far more dangerous than felons or drunk drivers. They will pull the trigger any chance they get. we see it in the news again and again.

if you are playing with guns, the laws of gun ownership is the last thing to be concerned about.

_Joe_
_Joe_

@digitalprotocolgiven your previous statements against carrying of any kind, I don't think you're in a position to determine what is and isn't "misguided"

And my point was that if you aren't ready to point a gun at someone and potentially have to pull the trigger, then you shouldn't have your gun out.  At all.

What's violent about that?  I'm not advocating shooting people.
