WCCO obtained a graphic photo of what former Minneapolis mayoral candidate Mark Andrew looked like after he was violently robbed at the Mall of America last Thursday.

RELATED: Why did no one help Mark Andrew when he was mugged?

Andrew, 63, was beaten with a baton by one suspect and had his face gouged by another's fingernails. He needed nine stitches to close his wounds.

Without further ado, here's the photo, which looks like it was taken in a doctor's office:

Brooklyn Park resident Letaija Shapree Cutler-Cain, 18, was charged with three felonies in connection with the incident. The other suspect who allegedly beat Andrew is a juvenile and was still awaiting charges as of this morning. The suspect who grabbed Andrew's iPhone and ran off hasn't been arrested, though the phone was returned to Andrew after the suspect apparently dropped it.

And there you have it. Deek sets a perfect example of everything that is wrong with this country.. The question is.. why would someone do this to another person for a freaking I -Phone.. Thats the sickening part,. Lock these bastards up to the fullest extent of the law. NOT the millions of people being locked up for victimless crimes.

I'm sure Mark Andrews would want bystanders to wait for authorities rather than get personally involved, afterall he is a democrat...

This stuff happens hundreds of times a day. You guys have gotten absolutely nowhere with your conversations. You've gotten so flustered over something that's already happened and probably isn't going to change. We all can agree that this sucks and we don't want it to happen to us, but unfortunately In the African bush sometime the lion mauls the fuck out of the cute baby cheetah. Keep truckin

I think this is a failure of the whole society. In my country the police don't carry guns and no one can get robbed with people watching. Almost zero crime. Only minor petty theft and the accassional hate murder. I actually grew up in a city where random people would grab you if someone accused u for a violating his rights and you would be obliged to go to the police together. No such thing as community service either. People who steal go to jail for a minimum of 3 months up to three years. Simple and it works. But of course for this to happen the whole society needs a reform which is impossible in US with its near insane liberities, in fact its inevitable that this society will continue to decade towards more violence and near anarchy if conditions don't improve for the poor with a need for highly militarized police and may be even a need to carry a firearm like in a wild west movie.

What makes this story so much more news worthy then what happens to anyone else? Why is city pages not talkin about anyone else getting beat up and robbed for a cell phone?

These types of crimes need 5-10 years of being locked up. I'm happy to have my taxpayer dollars going towards keeping people like this off of the streets if they can't be a decent human being.

I'm just now reading Herbert Asbury's "The Gangs of New York," published in 1928.  It's over 750 pages of stories like this.  Except the perpetrators are almost all Irish.  When my father was growing up in the 1930s and '40s, there were all kinds of stories like this.  Those perpetrators were Italians.  In Europe this is going on, and the perpetrators are Turkish or North African.

In the 1800s, "scientists" claimed that the Irish had the wrong-shaped skulls, so they were congenital criminals.  This was popular among the British who treated the Irish worse than they treated animals at slaughter.  I've seen claims that it's scientifically proven that people from Africa are genetically inclined to violence and stupidity, but usually the people making these claims are slack-jawed blotchy white people whose eyes are too close together and eat nothing but carbohydrates so their claims are less than persuasive.  Lots of Europeans claim that Muslims are inherently violent towards white people, which is a claim that would have shocked the Muslims who were beset by my ancestors during the Crusades.

So the racists among us are flat out wrong, as we all know.

But there is a common thread.  The people who do stuff like this are below even the bottom rung on each society's ladder of success.  They are completely alienated from everyone and everything around them.  They're told to study and work hard and they'll be successful, and they know from personal experience that is a lie.  The people they see who have worked hard all their lives are still dirt-poor, and the people they know who have gotten an education still get hassled by the cops for driving a car that looks too nice to be theirs.

A person who becomes alienated and hopeless becomes desperate and thinks in very short segments of time. If doing something will cause pleasure in the next 5 minutes but huge trouble in 12 hours, they'll do it.  The immediate gratification is a sure thing, and tomorrow will take care of itself, or more likely, be worse than today for some other reason.  Other people are just obstacles to be overcome or facilitators showing the way to the next short-term gratification.

People like this can be very dangerous.  If you meet me, you won't be worried because I'm obviously somebody who has something to lose and will take a lot of short-term pain or inconvenience to preserve my long-term stake in society.  For me to hit you over the head and take your iPhone would be absurd.  I could buy one if I wanted to, and an aggravated assault rap would really screw up my consulting business, not to mention my IRA contribution schedule, my volunteering schedule, and what would I say to my kids and my accountant?

The fact that an increasing number of younger and younger people are this alienated and nihilistic in their outlook is not a good thing for anybody.  And it's a clear sign that our society isn't working as it's supposed to.

You violate the negative rights of others in predation of their property and you go to jail to protect the rest of public from having their negative rights violated. The US justice system was built for the purpose of preserving negative rights, protecting property and enforcing contracts. Our prisons were built for the purpose of jailing the type of criminals who beat people over the head shouting "I'm going to kill you" regardless of whether or not the whole situation was a "game" in the criminals subjective opinion. You assault or kill people in western systems of justice you should be punished to the maximum extent of the law far beyond any punishment dished out for violations of statutes, ordinances or victimless crimes including drugs and prostitution. No shades of grey close the book. I would say the same thing of young white men and woman robbed an old black or Asian man because justice should be blind.

I would call it attempted murder as under US/MN law death threats during an assault are taken as a declaration of intent to kill unless mental stability can be successfully undermined by defense arguments.

Pat Vance

In my opinion it has nothing to do with race/ethnicity, it has EVERYTHING to do with how these two young women "behaved". It doesn't matter who the victim was it is WRONG on a CRIMINAL LEVEL as well as moral level to beat someone and threaten to kill them. Restorative Justice is great for "property" crimes, theft, vandalism, etc but assault NOT AN OPTION! If not jail/prison time then very restrictive "half-way houses" and separated from each other. I understand that I do not know their stories, I also can understand that families try their best (most of the time) to "raise their children right" and that no matter how hard they work to do that, they can't "control" what happens when that "child" leaves their home.

I hope the crooks all find Jesus. In a cold cell. They don't adhere to laws of decent respect from wanton violence and show no self restraint from the lives they have chosen for themselves. For shame on them and their families.

I know this family, and I know this girl's mother does the best she can with the life she's been dealt. The situation is terrible and unfortunate and her actions are inexcusable. There are many factors in this girl's life that you do not know, and you should not judge the family for the choices she made. I hope that her sentence is a wake up call and she gets the help she needs to turn her life around.

Deeq, I suspect the people involved in this story have no sense of Community, but rather have chosen a life of self serving criminal activity. Without severe consequences that gives them a green light to move onto another mall and continue their criminal behavior.

Deeq Abdi

Thank you, now we have to become that community for those kids and ones like them. Showing love to someone that has done you wrong is a very powerful thing, because the wrongdoer is expecting you to lash back

Aurora Jensen

Deeq, you make a lot of valid points. But she wasn't a kid stealing. She's a legal adult who beat someone with a weapon during a robbery. Saying "fuck Mark Andrew" and placing your sympathies with her is messed up. I hope she can turn her life around, but those are serious crimes, not just child's play.

John Walsh

How about a few years of community service Deeq? Personally I wouldn't mind my tax dollars going to keeping these little assholes out of MOA so I can shop alongside other self respecting white trash ;)

It is a failure of the young people involved. A failure of their parents. And a failure of their grandparents. They are all at fault. And it is a failure of our society that THIS COULD HAPPEN WITH NOBODY HELPING THE VICTIM! He was in a public place with witnesses around. Shame on them for not getting involved.

Racism is funny that way. Racists think that's just how things are, and that they are justified in their view which dehumanizes other people.

Deeq Abdi
Deeq Abdi

yes those are pretty dumb things Paul.. I come from the same generation and socio-economic backgrounds as kids do.. I did things similar to what they did, I didn't beat anyone but I did steal. I didn't go to jail but I did learn that I shouldn't take things that don't belong to me because my community showed me love when I was caught. I am not saying what they didn't wasn't wrong, I am saying that we should find another way to deal with the issue instead of sending them off to jail.

So what's the solution? More failed Liberal "feel good" social programs? Or maybe we should just implement all-out income equality where everyone, regardless on income, is taxed 100% and then government will dole out to each of us what "they" feel is appropriate.

I agree with you that these types of crimes transcends all races, but you cannot deny that this problem affects more African American youth (percentage-wise) than ANY other race (not just whites) in this country. And it has nothing to do with "society" failing them. It has to do with them failing themselves.

African Americans have FAR more social and educational (both public and private) programs to help elevate them out of poverty than any other race of people. Ever heard of the United Hmong College Fund? Or the United Latino College Fund? Or the United White Guy College Fund? Neither have I because they don't exist.

Deeq-

Minnesota has the second lowest incarceration rate in the United States, so low in fact that it is as low as the UK and many Prairie Provinces (the U.S. rate you refer to is simply a meaningless average including southern states).

Like the UK and Canada (and unlike some of the other U.S. states), Minnesota rehabilitates a lot, especially for crimes of drugs and theft (well drugs are not much of a crime here). You stated you stole. Many probably did. This was hardly a crime of theft, however. This was premeditated assault with the intent to do bodily harm in the act of threat. It was a a threat of murder.

Psychopathy is something that is underlying many societies...it happens in  Europe and it happens here. This woman certainly displays the behavior of a psychopath. If a psychologist determines that, it would be better to save those around her by locking her up rather than let her do any more harm to others. One good thing about places with low incarceration rates is that there is adequate room for imprisoning those who deserve it when we don't lock up those who don't.

I would argue that you were a kid who stole. You didn't deserve to be locked up. This woman does. Simple as that.

ajlalk3

No, we should send people who do criminal acts to jail. Sorry, but you don't get a free pass just because you're 18.

@MicheleObama It's black people in America because that's who's the most alienated in America.  Except where I grew up, when I grew up there, there weren't any black people.  There it was the poor white kids with messed-up parents.  And no mistake; some of them were very bad.

Obviously our patronizing, begrudging and intentionally half-hearted programs haven't worked.  Or maybe they have worked; plenty of interests require a permanent, desperate underclass.  Doesn't matter if they Irish or Italian or African-American.  There just needs to be that easily identifiable underclass.

I'm not saying I have the solutions.  I am saying the problem has nothing to do with race and it is a consistent, ongoing flaw in our system, going back a few centuries.
