Jason DeRusha offers perfect comeback to Dan Barreiro's gripe about Snownami coverage

april snow rect.jpg
KFAN host Dan Barreiro popularized the term "Snownami" to characterize how Minnesotans, fueled by the scare-mongering local media, react to major snowfalls. (He also popularized "Weather Terrorists" to describe meteorologists.)

So it's not too surprising that while the white stuff continued to fall this morning and made commutes miserable, the sports columnist-turned-sports talker took to Twitter to sound off about TV stations sending out reporters to tell us about the painfully obvious.

But Barreiro's media beef received the perfect retort from our old pal Jason DeRusha.

Here's the exchange:

I went back and listened to Bumper to Bumper that day (weds) and Kessler even read my first comment here on air! My own 15 seconds of fame! Funny how Barreiro made a joke of not living here though.

Barreiro has a point:  With snow, it's always slippery and slow going on the roadways.  That never changes.  DeRusha's comments are off-base.  Sure, our sports teams have generally stunk in recent memory -- but every game has something different: injuries, a particular spectacular (or craptacular) performance, or a game-strategy that failed or succeeded.  With roads and the weather, it's always the same: when it snows, the roads are slippery, treacherous and slow.  I don't need to see it from the window of a news-van.  Maybe one of our local news stations would like to put an emphasis on NEWS instead of entertainment, shock-value footage (look at the tornado devastation up to 2 weeks after an event somewhere), and endless weather hysteria.

Bob Taugner, when is the last time you walked through a crosswalk when it said "don't walk"? Or went over the speed limit in your car? Everyone *bends* the rules. Bikers are a small visiable minority so everyone thinks they are reckless elitist rulebreaks, especially arrogant radio hosts and Facebook posters.

I get Barreiro's point - but most of what I hear on KFAN is anti-something. Anti-weather reporters, anti-opinions about other's opinions, anti-this, anti-that . . it is a non stop gripe and moan fest where sun up to sun down every host I hear defines themselves by what they disagree with or don't believe in. The only show worth listening to is the nerd show on Tuesday evenings about video games.

But WHY the sports teamst suck is open to opinion and speculation. Lots of variables. Snow is always snow Ice is always ice.

Not that brilliant of a comeback. There's value in talking about the effect of a storm, but the live reports from the highway overpass are silly and irrelevant. Losses and the incompetency of a sports team varies widely from team to team and season to season. It's not the perfect comeback, except this is City Pages, where blowing DeRusha is the norm. #TweetsAreYours

Well, I made it on the radio. My life is now complete. Barreiro is still an arrogant moron. You are so seriously thin-skinned you had to read it out & tell everyone how wrong I am? Class act, Barreiro.

Barreiro lives in Minnetonka. You're confusing him with Tom BruNart. That, and you're being mocked on the radio right now.

Yeah? And when was the last time you stopped at a stop sign, Lance-A-Lout?

I came back, after 11 years, to find MNers bombarded with "weather scare". Just give me accurate numbers.

Matthew Martin isn't that what Berreiro says to liberals who complain about FoxNews? Ironic indeed.

I listen to Barreiro a lot. He has a good show (he has great guests) but he is a aggroant ass much of the time. Like how he rips on bikers (I am one) without ever riding in the city himself-he probably hasn't *been* on a bike in 30 years.

The "weather terrorists" as Dan Barreiro are only doing their job. Reporting the news, if the public overreacts (or under reacts) how is that the weather guy's fault? Don't like them? Don't watch and drive as fast as you want. Just make sure the roadway is empty.

it's a draw......neither side will change their ways. I can accept the road condition reports. now lets move on to what's really important. a third baseman with a big bat and a defensive backfield that doesn't wave at opposing ball carriers

It is pretty stupid. These weather terrorists seem to think that we've never seen a snow storm. In 50 years of living in Mn. I've never been stranded. Just plain ole common sense at work.

Most of the time the radio hosts don't even mention our teams because they are that bad. they talk about locale news, college sports, wild and timberwolves because they are doing well... dan even has a lawyer that calls in weekly to discuss cases around the state and country. so derusha they don't just talk sports or what you're hinting at is vikings so shut your mouth...

Barreiro is a moron. Weather reporters are doing exactly what they are directed to do by their management, just like most of us working class. He's lucky he was able to parlay a mediocre column into a high paid radio gig where he gets to say what he wants. Not to mention the fact that he no longer even lives here.

@Marcus Nielson Marcus, you are an idiot. Don't you know that those who criticize bicyclists are those who never push the limits of the yellow light, speed or cut off others in traffic because they're going to miss their exit?
