Jon Stewart rips Fox News over coverage of Star Tribune story

The morning talk show Fox & Friends took issue Monday with a Strib story about a St. Paul YMCA swim class for Muslim girls that was organized with the support of police.

"The minority becoming the majority at one community pool," says newsreader Heather Nauert. "Sharia law is now changing everything."

The segment was short but absurd enough to catch the eye of the Daily Show's Jon Stewart. In the clip below, the camera cuts from Nauert to Stewart, whose shrieking fills the gap in sound where, in some campy horror movie, a pounding of piano keys might have followed.

"Sharia law is changing everything! And probably not for the better!" Stewart shouts. "Because while I'm not really clear what Sharia law is, I do know it's relatively Muslim-y. And if Fox is talking about it, it's the kind of Muslim-y that's going to destroy this very nation."

It's unclear how a private one-hour swim class equals the destruction of our judicial framework. If so, we're hanging by a thread, and the version of reality offered by Fox is arguably the most misanthropic and pessimistic one imaginable.

No, the network seems to be suggesting that it's wrong to give Somali girls a religious exemption -- which is odd, considering that it never tires of pushing exemptions for Christians.

A few more shrieks, some swinging of the arms and finally Stewart mocks the pseudo-indignation of the Fox report: "First they came for our Tuesday synchronized aquatic dance, and I did not speak out, because I prefer water exercise with a pool noodle."

Actually, Stewart wasn't going after the Strib at all. He was going after Fox News and it's claim that "Shrira Law" was being foisted on the public.

the real irony in this is that ,if we were to embrace "sharia law"it would be the consrevative, christian repulicans imposing it...

As I've always said, there's always been about 20% of the American people who would love to start shoving people into ovens.  Fox has been mining this demographic with the intensity of a fracking rig in North Dakota.  Too bad the depletion rate for racism and religious bigotry is a lot slower than the depletion rate for fracking.

The constantly-repeated mantra of "Sharia Law" is a nice touch though. Especially from the people who keep trying to inject their own bewildered versions of Christianity into every aspect of our culture.

See, to people who believe in actual freedom, what the YMCA is doing in offering this class is to provide a service to people who want it, in keeping with their original mission.  That's a good thing.  It's only a bad thing if you're into racial and religious bigotry, and live in a dark, fear-filled world where you cannot control or manage your own life and have to rely on authority figures to tell what to think and believe, in return for the pittance they're willing to give you to keep you barely alive.

It's harder to think for yourself and take responsibility for your own life, but for many of us the alternative is unthinkable.  Hence, no Fox News.

Seneca I believe this is a YWCA. I believe YWCAs may not currently be religious... And Its actually very Christian to be nice and share your pool with others. I think Jesus was a cool dude who would just be like " sure man, enjoy the pool man " that's just Jesus way bro.

@Patricia S. Davis   Ridiculous.  There is no valid reason not to let this group swim with more modest clothing.  If you look back at the history of swimming, people have worn as much or more.

It is beneficial to have people know how to swim; it is good exercise, it prevents people drowning -- and frankly, swimming in clothing like this is better practice for real life emergency assistance in the water than bathing suits.

This is a cultural preference, not 'sharia law'.  What a load of hateful people to try to make something bad out of this.
  YOU included.

Augusta National Golf course wanted to have a club without women but women deemed that misogynistic and hateful.  So if men can't have their own clubs, nor should women, Muslims or anyone else.  Fun world you built that ignores the freedom of association.

@Seneca Berg   So? Y's offer co-ed swimming, and when there is a reason to - as is the case here - they can offer swimming sessions for only one gender.

They also offer swimming and other periods for old people, other demographics -- so what?

And here's a news blast for you - in many communities, they also work with groups from other religions, not just Muslims, but Jews, etc. -- again, SO WHAT?  GOOD FOR THEM!

_Joe_
_Joe_

@Seneca Berg

You're missing the point entirely.

No one forced the YMCA to do this.  Under law, no one could.  They did it voluntarily when it was asked for by members of their community.

See, most christians understand the value of cooperation and understanding within their own communities.

@_Joe_ Now that I think about it, that's even scarier.  Scary Sharia Muslims are buying special considerations at the YMCA?

As I remember when our kids were little and took swimming lessons at the Y, we paid for that too, and the pool was closed to everyone else at that time, too.  So maybe we were imposing some sort of new-parent-with-toddlers Sharia on 'Murica!

Yeah but you know what? You are no better than MNJoe. That comment you made about him and his mom is utter filth. You basically just lowered yourself to his standards (perhaps even worse). He called me an idiot, asshole, Repubican't, etc. but even I did not resort that type of vile language. You are just as stupid as he is. Grow up and learn to act like an adult when trying to making a point. You and JoeMN are the reason why this country is so divided and messed up.

taylor9133

@MNjoe You are delusional.  I'm not gonna argue the fact the Bush was a fuck up.  But if you are gonna compare his or any conservative role to that of the Taliban.  Go see a shrink first thing in the morning or better yet just get the fuck out of the states.  Go to Afghanistan I don't know.  Also the only positive thing you liberals can come up with to back up your new hero- Obama is his stance on healthcare.  Face the facts not much has changed on that front since he was elected.  How many years ago?  Wake up and look at the big picture.  And stop whining you sniveling ass, stop your nonsense, you are just afterbirth Joe, you slithered out of your Mother's filth, they should have put you in a glass jar on a mantelpiece.

MNjoe

@WatusiJenkins  Here's a fact for you, not an insult - you are a fucking idiot (yes, that means you are a person of low intellect.)  Conservatives are anti-gay, anti-woman, anti-immigrant, anti-government and anti-poor. You defend a president who started 2 wars putting the country trillions more into debt and killing and maiming thousands of American soldiers while cutting funds to the VA and other organizations to help veterans. All the while railing against a president who is helping millions of Americans get the healthcare that they've been denied by big corporations (insurance companies). Most of you lack the basic human gene for empathy, so yes, you're worse than the fucking Taliban. (Pardon my French, asshole.) I could go on and on with many more examples but you're obviously too stupid to understand any of it so I rest my case.

WatusiJenkins
WatusiJenkins

@MNjoe

What point were you trying to make? You said you prefer Muslims over Republicans. I told you to go move into the crack stacks where there are hundreds of Muslims, but also pointed out that the majority of them are quite conservative. You then agree with me while hurling insults.

You then make an absurd statement that Progressives ended stoning. Huh? Did they end stoning and switched over to beheading instead?

Then you make sweeping generalizations about all Republicans and compare them to the Taliban :"...all conservatives are like that. Idiot!" The Taliban? Really?

Finally I point out to you that using profanity and juvenile name-calling isn't necessary when expressing your opinion. You then respond by more name-calling.

Sorry, but a thought process like that is typical of a person who has low intellect.

Or a third grader with a temper.

And by comparing your thought process to a third grader was not an insult. I was stating a fact.

Dog Gone

@WatusiJenkins @MNjoe Again, like a true Republican't, you totally ignore the point being made and move on to another whiny subject. Jeez - your stupidity has no bounds, does it?

@WatusiJenkins @MNjoe Speaking of intelligence, that's my point! You stupid fucking conservatives scream and cry about Muslims and you are just as bad when it comes to certain issues. If it wasn't for Progressives, you idiots would still be stoning people to death. Conservatives are the American Taliban. Also, not all Muslims are like that - all conservatives are like that. Idiot!

WatusiJenkins
WatusiJenkins

@MNjoe

You must not be very intelligent. Muslims are VERY conservative. Go stand outside a mosque after Friday prayers and try to preach gay marriage and abortion and see what type of reactions you get.
