Serge chills in the Fox 9 green room before a TV appearance this morning.
A longtime friend of the man who made it rain dollar bills on the Mall of America rotunda last Friday got in touch with City Pages and said Serge Vorobyov originally hoped the stunt would help him patch things up with his ex-wife, Olivia.

THE BACKSTORY: Serge Vorobyov makes it rain money on Mall of America rotunda [VIDEOS]

Toward that end, the friend, Al (he asked us to withhold his last name), provided us with a photo of one of the dollar bills Serge tossed. He said the same message was printed on each of them.

Here it is:

According to Al, Serge downplayed the role his effort to win back Olivia played in the stunt as he began to realize that being perceived as a jilted lover wouldn't help the video get picked up by the media and go viral. So instead, he began to frame his motivations around "paying it forward" and "holiday cheer."

Al said Serge's ultimate hope, at least from the standpoint of his pocketbook, was that the notoriety generated by the video would benefit his failed car hauling business if and when he restarts it.

"We all thought it was ridiculous," Al said, referring to Serge's circle of friends. "Walking away with at best a couple dollars benefits no one. It was grandstanding."

Nearly 400,000 YouTube views later, it remains to be seen whether the video Serge's brother shot will have its desired financial impact. But as far as Serge's love life goes, it already sounds like the stunt was a failure. Al said that even after Serge publicly professed his love for her 1,000 times over, Olivia still has no intention of getting back together with him.

We've reached out to Serge on Facebook but have yet to hear back.

It's kinda poetic. I believe his motives may be a bit deeper than we are giving him credit for. Of course he's still pretty crazy.

Yeah, because throwing away $1000 is the way to a woman's heart. It comes in right above kill her cat and right below buy her fake diamonds and tell her they're real. No wonder this guy is divorced. I'd say, single and staying that way.

The irony when he finds out his fine is $1,000

So is he being charged for defacing government currency since it's illegal to advertise on money?

Thanks for printing the actual story today. This was not "paying it forward" this was a self serving act. He wanted attention. Helping others had nothing to do with it.

Is his ex a stripper I don't get it, why dollar bills? Why did he not just give her the money in a card?

@Lamar Salinas-Niemczycki But then he wouldn't have gotten to get all dressed up and grandstand on Fox news!

@Jason Thomas Borneman good question... I assume he's not advertising his business so much as he's promoting himself.

@TweetsAreYours  He is advertising a video on youtube (which I refuse to watch) that he has advertisements on and then gets paid for. As a business owner, at one point I thought of many self promoting things that were in turn Self-Ish including writing my websites on dollar bills. What ever his true intentions are, since I don't know myself, it is still illegal what he did. I wouldn't say a negative thing if I felt, for one second, that this is about Love and not money.
