Mark Dayton still not inclined to sign medical marijuana bill

Dayton: Still not a fan of the (medicinal) sticky icky.
During a Friday interview with the Associated Press, Mark Dayton said he'll sign a bill legalizing Sunday liquor sales if it gets through the Legislature. But the governor isn't as supportive of efforts to relax marijuana laws.

Dayton has long held he'll only support medical marijuana if a bill to that effect has the support of law enforcement, and he reiterated that position during his chat with the AP.

"Dayton says he has urged supporters of legalizing marijuana for medical purposes in Minnesota to work with opponents in law enforcement if they want progress on the issue," the AP writes in a summary of the interview. "Dayton repeatedly cites law enforcement concerns for his own opposition to medical marijuana.... [though he] says he'd probably sign a bill to legalize it if sheriffs, prosecutors and other law enforcement groups get behind it."

But with officials like Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek still linking marijuana use to violent crime, it seems unlikely law enforcement will be on board with medical marijuana anytime soon.

Late last legislative session, Rep. Carly Melin, D-Hibbing, and Sen. Scott Dibble, D-Minneapolis, introduced a medical marijuana bill that had the backing of some Republicans. Supporters promise to push the bill in a big way this session, but in light of Dayton's AP interview, it appears that effort will be for naught (assuming the bill doesn't have so many votes that legislators can override Dayton's potential veto).

It's law enforcement, why does he need their permission or blessing to pass a law? They are just enforcers. Really I think it's more that he doesn't want to piss off the unions so he can have their backing come election time. Just one more politician playing politics.

No one ever overdosed on pot. After just moving here from Colorado and being a medical Mary Jane card holder - seeing what it's done for the people and the state - MN would be crazy not to do this. Don't worry, it'll happen in time! The Midwest is....the Midwest after all.

You're all fools if you think that voting on one issue is good for anyone or if you think that voting third party is anything but throwing away your vote.

Let's go. Booze make me do dumb shit. I'll smoke a joint over gettin drunk. Anywhere. Anytime. Anyplace.

“When you sit across from him and you watch him pop 15 to 16 pills while you’re having a meeting, it’s scary,” Mike Parry said of Governor Dayton.

@daniel willert is just as confused as Mark Dayton. DUI's, rape, domestic violence and alcohol poisoning are the real detriments to our society. Not the stoned cancer patients, the elderly suffering from glaucoma, or even the kid too stoned to find the remote. The drug war in this country is an absolute joke.

Newsflash: stop electing establishment, status-quo politicians like Dayton if you want change. Vote for open-minded candidates who actually support liberty and freedom. Big Pharma and the drug companies make WAY TOO much money peddling their legal drugs and they do what they can to keep these establishment candidates elected. Dayton has done good things, yes, like support same-sex marriage, but don't give him a free pass on issues like this. People suffering from cancer and other sicknesses should NOT be prosecuted for self medicating with a plant.

Michelle Bachmann told me that she is all in favor of legalization of marijuana !  Unless it was someone else with the same name as hers .I wonder if the Republicans will jump onto the legalization bandwagon? If they were smart that and all the gun grabbing by the Democrats could help rejuvenate the Republican party.

Mark Dayton should pull his head out of his ass since there is an election coming up.  Too bad the Republicans will just put up a crazy person or a rich asshole so its pretty impossible to take them serious.   If I was the Independence Party I'd put up a tax the rich/legalize marijuana candidate and they could win.

Let us cut to the real issue re-election. Alcohol is a widely accepted form of mood altering drug! The alcohol industry has deeper roots then the pharmaceutical industry. If the pharmaceutical industry could get rid of alcohol they would but they can't. However they can afford to keep pot illegal. If pot were legal it would wipe out their profits from anti-depressants, anti-reflux meds, etc not to mention all the prescriptions made out to counter the side-effects of the meds given to treat the problem and then the meds to counter those side-effects and so on. Pharmaceutical companies would then have to "go back" to finding ways to really "combat disease" not just make money from it. Wait until he decides he's not going to run for re-election then we will see. Really people educate yourselves about pot don't buy into what other people tell you! BEER IS THE BIGGEST BADDEST "GATEWAY" DRUG NOT POT! If pot were completely legal most of the other stuff would fade away. Yes there would still be people who used other illegal drugs but there are a lot of alcoholics out here too! Didn't we decide that just because a few misuse something we shouldn't stop the vast majority who don't from enjoying it? That goes for many things from alcohol to cars to guns to hunting and fishing to just about anything you can think of. We don't stop people from having children because some other people abuse children.

Funny I was thinking the exact same thing......except I was thinking he needs to put his hands on his shoulders and pull his head out of the ass of law enforcement opposers.

"BEER IS THE BIGGEST BADDEST "GATEWAY" DRUG NOT POT!"

I totally agree with this statement since I have personally seen close loved ones start with beer and end up alcoholics on more harder liquors. Not to mention they have become "VIOLENT"
