MPD distributes bizarre release about cops who were caught dropping N-bomb last summer

TholePowellMPD.jpg
Minneapolis Police Department officers Brian Thole and Shawn Powell berate a Green Bay cop during a June 29 incident that may or may not have cost them their jobs.
:::: UPDATE :::: The Star Tribune, citing anonymous sources, reports that the two officers in question have been fired. KARE 11's Jana Shortal reports the same thing.

In a release distributed this afternoon, the Minneapolis Police Department announced that Police Chief Janeé Harteau "has reached a decision" about two officers who were caught using the N-bomb and referring to black guys as monkeys during an embarrassing incident last summer in Green Bay.

THE BACKSTORY: Green Bay PD explains why it outed Mpls cops for being racist, homophobic jerks [VIDEO]

But the thing is, the release, citing privacy laws, doesn't provide any indication as to what that decision is. Were they fired? Demoted? Given a raise? It's anybody's guess.

Here's the entire release:
Following an internal affairs investigation, Chief Harteau has made a decision regarding two officers involved in the incident in Green Bay, WI on June 29, 2013. Officer Brian Thole and Officer Shawn Powell were informed of this decision earlier today. Chief Harteau is not able to provide any further details at this time due to date privacy laws.
Makes you wonder -- why even bother distributing this in the first place?

The reason I suspect the chief made no comment is because no final discipline has been imposed at this time. Although she or her proxy has advised the officers that they are being terminated, she also knows that according to civil service rules both officers have a right to a veterans preference hearing, as they are both veteran status employees. They will remain on the city payroll until this matter is resolved at that hearing. This process will likely take many months or even a year until it is resolved. They may get their jobs back; a hearing officer may not find just cause for the termination. Or, the officers loose at that veterans preference hearing, then the final discipline will be imposed at that time and they will be terminated. The officers will have no other recourse and the chief can talk about the facts learned from the internal investigation, but not until that time. That investigation was administrative, not criminal. The officers have not committed any crime. Ultimately, the reason for their termination is because there was a finding, based upon the investigation, that the officers violated policy and procedure; engaging in misconduct. I know some people may not like it, but like everyone, the officers are entitled to due process. This process will just have to play out. It is what it is....

It's great to know that since they're veterans, they're racist attitudes have greater protection than if they were merely cops. #TweetsAreYours

You can imagine my complete lack of surprise. I have always thought the institutionalized racism in the MPD has been clear as day. Good to see some press finally say something about it.

If bigots are accustomed to using the N Word, isn't it also safe to assume that a bigot would also have a preconceived biased towards a group of people? Such as calling all cops skinheads with badges?

If the "nig" word is acceptable for some to say , it's acceptable for ALL to say.

Well I doubt anything of substance came out of it. It isn't uncommon for bigots to use the N- word in a state where the majority of bigots are doing a good job of smiling in our faces or blaming the Black subcultures use of the N-word for the reason they used it. Who knows maybe the cop will come forward and say he's had sex with a few Black chicks or he has Black friends because then that would make him not racist [sly grin]. Secondly, he's a cop (I call them skinheads with badges) cops get away with murder, assaulting people, domestic abuse, doing drugs on the job and sometimes rape so I'd rather see cops lose their jobs over those things than anything else.

If they are being fired for using the N-word then they should fire half the police force in Minneapolis

I am a Chief Steward for another public employee's Union. I would guess that the Union grieved this and lost. The details and outcome of this is private and cannot be discussed. The data regarding public employees that is open to the public is the name and salary.

I believe in free speech, and that it protects "unpopular" speech, that as long as he is not on duty he can say whatever he wants. Political Correctness is the enemy, not free speech. Agree or disagree with "what" he said is your right also, but to punish a guy for speaking his mind....wrong, and more wrong than what he said. I get it that he is a public servant and we want them to be impartial and all that bullshit, but they all have bias, YOU have bias, we ALL have bias.... I am also a big believer in, you can't un-say anything, so it is best to say as little as possible, and to ensure that when you open your mouth it is for the greater good and a well thought out statement. It is better to have your absence noticed than your presence announced by something stupid you just said....

@Patrick Duffy That's quite a mouthful for someone who's advocating saying "as little as possible."  Also, call your boss a name - such as the "fucking lesbian" statement made by one of the cops and see where your free speech lands you. We don't need racists or homophobes on the MPD - period.
