Ray Widstrand, St. Paul gang beating victim, undergoes emergency brain surgery

Widstrand endured at least two brain surgeries in the days after he was beaten by a group of as many as 40 teens. Today, he underwent another.
More than four months after he was beaten to the brink of death by a mob of teenagers near the intersection of Payne and Minnehaha avenues in east St. Paul, 27-year-old Ray Widstrand was rushed to Regions Hospital for emergency brain surgery.

THE BACKSTORY: Ray Widstrand, St. Paul gang beating victim, is recovering... slowly

Widstrand's recovery was seemingly progressing surely, albeit slowly, but his family is again asking for prayers after pressure he was feeling in his head resulted in Widstrand undergoing a craniotomy this morning.

An entry published today on Widstrand's CaringBridge page provides some details:
Please keep Ray in your thoughts and prayers this morning. Ray went back to Regions last night after feeling more pressure on the right side of his head. This morning, we were told that Ray's body is rejecting the bone flaps that were put back in on November 6th. Doctors have rushed Ray to the ER, where they will do an emergency craniotomy this morning. This surgery will take around four hours. We will update everyone after the surgery, but for now please keep Ray in your prayers!
One of the two previous entries on Widstrand's CaringBridge page published this month was actually written by him. In it, he tells readers, "Happy Holidays from my family to yours, thanks again for all the support and wishes." The other entry, written by one of Ray's friends or family members, details his slow recovery.

"Ray has always been fiercely independent, so he has naturally been frustrated by the slow incremental steps he has to take in his recovery," that entry says. "Ray's healing is still ongoing."

The brave Social Justice Warriors were just trying to help him out by forcibly dismantling his White Privilege for him, that's all.

Today I learned it's racism when stating the facts.

I hope that every single one of those 40 teenagers burn to death and their parents finds their charred remains on Christmas Day.

The Eastside will never be the Northside. There's far too many racist white people to let that happen.

The Eastside is quickly becoming North Minneapolis. It's out of control and the police aren't doing enough to stop it. When I was leaving on the Eastside I watched a black dude beating the hell out of a black woman in the middle of the street and about 30 other men just standing there watching and laughing. I called the police and ALL of the cowards took off running the second the heard the sirens. Another time I had my car surrounded on minnehaha by about 20 black men who wouldn't move out of my way so I could get through. They were just waiting for me to pop off so they could do something. I'd see handfuls of thugs hanging out on the porches of the Habitat For Humanity homes, which I thought were built for the impoverished but quickly just became hubs for gang activity, dog fighting and drug dealing. The only thing I ever saw Eastside cops doing was harrassing the homeless. Made me sick!

Racism is such a beautiful thing. Well, if all blacks are prone to violence, then white males are all pedophiles. I mean, look at priests and Jerry Sandusky. And, looking at some of you racist posters' profile pictures, I believe it.

One can either part of the problem or part of the solution. In this instance, you can't fight fire with fire. My best wishes for Ray, this fight will be harder.

eastside was always a shithole at least when i moved there. maybe not as polluted with all the litterig. if it wasnt hmong gangs then it was something else. I wouldnt be surprised if there are mexican gangs running around now too up there where over a decade ago there werentwhat pisses me off is that everybody wants to be politically correct but it doest prevent these crimes from happening or the gross injustices done onto the victims. nobody can claim that not talking about the problem as it exists is helpful either.

It's funny how everyone is defending black youths. If u look at these crimes knock out game etc... They are mainly done by black youths. Why would you defend them when they do this. Not all blacks I know but why can't it be said they ARE the ones committing these crimes?

Black, white, arab, Latino, Asian, European, makes no difference. Idiots in every color creed and race. Sadly most of the bastards are influenced by the music they hear today. They let the music guide them. Convince them. I wish this gentleman a speedy and full recovery. Prayers to him and his family.

This is so sad. Perhaps the parents of all of the kids associated with these gangs need to be held accountable for the actions of their children - if they act as a gang they all as responsible as the next...

Ray, you are ever in our thoughts. On the anniversary of the Newtown tragedy Saturday, members of the law abiding gun owners community gathered at a coffee shop in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood where you were viciously beaten nearly to death by gangbangers 4 months ago. We took time to reflect on how both situations - your incident and Newtown - were incidents where effective self defense was not present, and in the case of Newtown wasn't even allowed. That's wrong, and this is why we continue to take action to empower individuals, share truth and fight to protect human rights.

You will remain in our thoughts, Ray.

Its because its easier to deflect the problem then actually deal with it.  Because of the internet we are now able to witness firsthand the type of street violence perpetrated by these youths, but this is something that has been going on for years without any sort of repercussions for the actions.  This isn't some sort of isolated issue to Minneapolis either.  When I lived in Seattle this was a HUGE problem, that has only grown due to lack of repercussions.  Until there is stiffer punishment for juveniles who commit grievous acts of violence, you will continue to hear about these stories.

@info3592 Yeah the problem in Newtown was not enough guns.  You bloodthirsty idiots are getting children killed.  If you cared about getting guns out of the hands of gang members you would support reasonable gun laws.   A national registry of guns would stop gun violence because we would find out where gangsters get their guns.  People like you enable murderers.  It's awful how you try to capitalize off of violence you create.

@CITYRIDERRT19

You are correct. It is deflection (aka political correctness) . Black community leaders know damn very well that there is a problem within their communities. They also know damn very well that the police are powerless to do anything about it. They know that the root of the problem lies in the promotion of single motherhood, the welfare mentality, and the lack of personal responsibility. But as long as Liberal politicians take a blind eye to the root of the problem, nothing will change. Their answer to the problem is to throw more money into "social programs". I think that it is safe to say that these liberal social programs do nothing but to encourage this type of behavior. I think that the past 50 years of the "Great Society" mentality have proven that succinctly. Then you have Obama.........................................

@MicheleBachmann PROTECT MN is the organization standing in the way of reasonable gun laws. Laws that would have heightened the penalties for straw purchases, and prohibited person with of guns or ammo were OPPOSED by PROTECT MN on the grounds that they would "unfairly impact certain communities." That is a direct quote. PROTECT MN, MAYORS AGAINST ILLEGAL GUNS, MAD DADS, MOMS DEMAND ACTION are not concerned about punishing criminals (the children of their members) and would rather take guns away from the law abiding.

@MicheleBachmann @really  Here in MN, the GOCRA doesn't just lobby for responsible gun laws, it lobbies for their enforcement. The proposal, opposed by protect mn, that straw buyers and criminals with guns face harsher penalties had the full support of GOCRA and many lawmakers and would have passed. Furthermore, a stipulation in that original bill that law enforcement get funding to keep the background check system up to date (which they hadn't been updating) was later co-opted by the paymar/latz cabal and passed into law. So the only "gun control" bill that passed into law last session actually came from those so-called "evil" gun groups. All laws are meaningless without enforcement. Opposing enforcement of existing gun laws and the strengthening of those laws (as PROTECT MN did and does) is silly, and shows that many of these anti-gun groups are not motivated by a desire to save lives. They pander to inner city outrage in exchange for voting democrat. Want to save lives? Enforce the law. That will mean members of the inner city community go to jail. Husbands, sons, fathers. That's a harsh reality. That's why all these anti-gun groups go after the law-abiding instead. People who cherish their freedom don't vote for their party anyway.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@really Whoever is standing in the way is awful.  I pay attention to politics.  I know its mostly conservatives and pro gun groups.  Any gun group that doesn't lobby for responsible gun laws is wrong and should be criticized.  Does your group support a nationwide gun registry?   Does your group support the punishment of straw buyers?  I doubt it.  So fuck off with your racist lying nonsense.   We've tried no laws and it gets kids killed.  New laws are what we need not your same old excuses and lies.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@WhiteMatt If a criminal steals a gun well I guess that can't be avoided.  If a gun seller is selling those guns on the black market a nationwide registry would be an effective tool stopping sellers.   If Tom's Guns is buying 1000 9mm guns every month and 950 of them are ending up in the hands of criminals it seems like Tom should get arrested.   Your pathetic stupid excuses kill children.

@WhiteMatt I agree he should have avoided the crowd. That said, a gun would have served him well. They're punk losers not fearless warriors with a death wish. The gun goes bang they scatter like cockroaches, whether the bullet connects or not.

WhiteMatt
WhiteMatt

But then on the other hand, a gun wouldn't have done him any good. He was up against more than 20 people (and probably most of them were packing too). His major mistake was walking through the crowd. He should have just made a detour, went home and called 911.

Criminals don't buy guns, they steal them or get them on the black market.

MicheleBachmann

@digitalprotocol  Guns are manufactured by corporations.  We could track the serial numbers and find out why they are in the hands of children.  The NRA and idiots block reasonable gun reform and refuse to hold people that sell guns to criminals responsible.
