U of M alums want to cheat on spouses more than grads of any other school, study finds

When it comes to love and marriage, you shouldn't trust Gophers, apparently.
Ashley Madison -- a website that bills itself as "the online personals & dating destination for casual encounters, married dating, discreet encounters and extramarital affairs" -- put together a list of "Cheating Universities: The Top 10 Alma Maters of American Adulterers" earlier this fall.

RELATED: Woodbury and Edina are top extramarital affair locales in Twin Cities, says AshleyMadison.com

And lo and behold, the study found that no group of alums is more adulterous than University of Minnesota Gophers, as 7.8 percent of the 10,350 Ashley Madison members surveyed were U of M alums, the highest percentage of any school.

The top 10 list mostly features well-known party schools such as Arizona State, Ohio State, and USC. Two other Big 10 schools are on there as well -- the University of Iowa and Michigan.

With regard to all the party schools on the list, Ashley Madison founder Noel Biderman remarked, "It's apparent from our survey that certain campuses offer a climate that's more conducive to would-be adulterers, typically someone more adventurous and looking to have new experiences."

Interestingly, married folks with advanced degrees appear to be more likely to cheat than those with less education. According to the study, 9.4 percent of cheaters only completed high school, while 12.2 percent obtained a degree from a junior or community college, and 23.3 percent have a postgraduate degree of some sort.

And if you marry a psychology major, be wary. The study indicates that psych majors are more likely than any others to be at least interested in cheating on their spouses.

When I was in the full-time MBA program at Carlson years ago, there was a classmate (male) who needed to find a last-minute sub to take a prospective candidate (female) around the school for a tour.  So he sent out an email to the entire class, targeting the men, pitching it as an opportunity for an easy score for the single guys and a chance to get a little on the side for the married guys.  Dude got FLAMED by pretty much every female classmate!

Perhaps Minnesotans just are more comfortable about being open & honest about their relationships. Nothing suggests that the partner isn't informed about the action on the side.

It's because people look so sexy in maroon and gold.  It's really really really easy to get laid when you have a smiling Goldy Gopher helping you.  Plus you have all those Wisconsin graduates and they have never seen a man that has all his teeth so its pretty easy to come across as sexy to those ladies.  It adds up.

I wonder if it's more MN residents or out of state residents.
