MNGOP Sen. Fischbach on Senate building: DFL action "could potentially be illegal"

SenateOfficeBuildingRendering.jpg
A rendering of the proposed new Senate office building.
Today, the Senate Rules Committee approved a plan for a new $90 million Senate office building on a party-line vote. The proposal now heads to the House Rules Committee for final approval.

DFLers say the new building is needed because renovations at the Capitol will force some senators to relocate their offices in the short-term and because more space is simply a necessity looking further down the road. But the proposal has been blasted both for featuring an inadequately urban design and for being sneakily tucked into a broader tax bill at the end of the last legislative session.

During a conversation with City Pages today, MNGOP chair and former Senator Keith Downey said even if those concerns are set aside, he doesn't think the proposal represents a responsible expenditure of taxpayer dollars.

"The obvious thing that jumps out is that Democrats raised $2 billion in taxes and a lot more in fees from everyday Minnesotans [last session] and one of their priorities was to build 44 senators a $90 million office building complex," Downey told us. "On top of that, there weren't even any public hearings about it during the legislative session."

Sen. Michelle Fischbach, R-Paynesville, questioned whether there's even really a space crisis in the first place.

"Yes, [the new building] would create two larger hearing rooms, but we've done what we needed to do with what we have," she told us, adding she wouldn't necessarily have been opposed to adding more office space as part of the Capitol renovations, but "would not be supportive of another new project" of any sort right now.

"The process was so flawed," she added, referring to the new building being tucked into the tax bill. "There's a lawsuit about it -- what the Senate leadership did could potentially be illegal. They sent this through on a bill it shouldn't have been on."

Asked why she thinks the Senate DFL leadership elected to go that route, Fischbach said, "I don't know, other than, this was an easier route because in a bonding bill, you need a three-fifths majority. This they simply passed [with a majority]."

So if not in a new office building, where should senators set up shop while the Capitol is being renovated?

"There's plenty of open office space in St. Paul, but [Democrats] clearly wanted a big-ticket facility," Downey replied. "I couldn't tell you all their motivations for going ahead with this, but the other options are obvious and don't cost $90 million."

And you know goddamn very well that if the MNGOP wanted to build a $90 mill office building, the hypocrite liberals would be screaming foul play.

Leave it to the Dems to keep spending money that isn't there.. Smh.

Not surprised at all by this. If they run out of money, they can always increase our taxes. We need to quit being so partisan and start holding every one of these politicians responsible for how they are using tax dollars. I need a clear reason why this is necessary. The middle class is taking a beating right now....neither party is fixing it.

But somehow they think a $1 billion stadium discrimination against gays and minorities are great uses of our tax dollars!

how much more do we endure before we all realize that politicians, on "both" sides, are all out for themselves. There is a ton of open space available out there to house people temporarily..This is ludicrous.

Awesome!! More gov't spending! I can guarantee that there is no way this comes in under $110 Million by the time it's done. But go Big Spending DFL if there is one thing MN needed it was another Gov't building for part time Senators.

Can one of the friendly liberal/progressive/DFL types here tell me why this is a better idea than just leasing an existing space?

Only stupid people care what Republicans think about where our government spends money.   Last time the Republicans were in charge their stupid ideas crashed the economy and made a bridge fall in the water.

Or not, maybe do something crazy like have a surplus fund for emergencies.. Just because it's there doesn't mean it needs to be spent.

As it is we all know the Capitol repairs are going to go over budget, might as well leave some of the funds unused to cover the overages.

Not that I agree with the stadium, but how does it discriminate against minorities?

@WhiteMatt Yeah its amazing how I pay attention to what happens in the world and then apply those lessons to what I think and say.   You should try it sometime since the only things you are capable of saying are stupid insults and racist statements.

From Think Progress's website:

"Private sector job creation under President Obama has far exceeded private sector job creation under President Bush. 40 months into his presidential term, there are currently more private sector jobs in the economy than when Obama came into office. At the same point in President Bush’s term, the total number of private sector jobs was still down 1.7 percent from where it began.

The numbers are even starker when measuring each president’s record from the moment job creation returned. Private sector job creation returned in February of 2010, the 13th month of President Obama’s term. Since then, the economy has added 4.3 million private sector jobs, a 4 percent increase. Under President Bush, the economy stopped shedding private sector jobs in July of 2003, fully 30 months into his administration. From that point until May of 2004, the economy added just 1.5 million private sector jobs, an increase of only 1.4 percent."

@mingtran Nothing but insults and stupidity.  Too stupid to realize how dumb you look.  You know a libertarian government wouldn't conquer Cuba so you feel stupid.  Instead of being an adult and learning a lesson you just say something stupid and insulting.  Your lack of brain power is very obvious.  Try responding with an actual argument.  Try not to misspell so many words.

@mingtran Yeah, I remember you saying that because I asked you if there had ever been a working libertarian government.  You went back 100 years and cited a government that was busy conquering foreign lands.   That makes you look really really stupid.  You know, like you don't understand what libertarian means.  You aren't a remotely libertarian government when you are conquering Cuba.

mingtran
mingtran topcommenter

I told you the closest thing the world has ever known to a libertarian form of gov was the US before 1913, the year the Federal Reserve was created. The results were absolutely amazing for the average person and i demonstrated why. You look pretty stupid not being able to understand that, especially as this is about the fourth time I've had to tell you the same exact thing.

Maybe you actually are retarded. I'll try to be nicer to you

MicheleBachmann

@mingtran You were asked if a libertarian government has ever worked in the real world.  You cited a country that was conquering foreign lands.  It makes you look pretty stupid and like you don't know what libertarian means.

I said "our most libertarian era". It's right there, go look at it. You proved that you can't read and are a liar :) The Spanish American War was the shortest, lamest war the US has ever fought. How is that super short war going to boost much military-industrial revenue? You ever thought not having a central bank contributed to the greatest buying power the world has ever known? Do you ever think about anything?

I could bust you up all month. Say something back, I wanna make you look dumb some more. Lol

MicheleBachmann

@mingtran A libertarian government doesn't have a military conquering foreign territory.   You ever think having a large interventionist military might have boosted the American economy?    You just prove you don't understand what words mean.

You're funny. I mop the floor with you in every response. Then you come back and lie about everything I say. During our most free market, most libertarian era ( early 20th century) the avg American worker had more buying power than at any other time in history of the world.

@mingtran You are never smart enough to actually debate on any topic.  You've actually tried to debate me twice.   The first time you said when the United States was busy conquering Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. it was an example of the ideal libertarian government.   It was so laughable you never bothered to explain how a libertarian government is conquering foreign lands.  The second time you tried to debate you revealed you think doctors are oppressing you.   You just aren't very smart or informed.   That's why all your posts are one or two lines of insults and names.

@CinBlueland What you are just saying is a lie however.   Bush's economic policy was the Bush tax cuts.  No Republicans opposes them.  John McCain and Mitt Romney ran on the idea the Bush tax cuts were a good idea.  They lost.   Are you honestly so stupid you refuse to change when you have been proven wrong?    We tried your stupid ideas and the economy tanked.  Your dumb excuses are pathetic.   Bush received a surplus and by the end of his term Wall Street was collapsing.   That's an epic failure unless you are a pathetic excuse making idiot.    All you do is blame Democrats and lie.   Name one way you've changed from Bush.   Just saying.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@CinBlueland  Well since you never disagree with anything Republicans have ever done you don't get the benefit of the doubt.    I paid attention when Bush was President.  None of you cowards spoke out against what he did.   Obama gets slammed all the time by Democrats.   You are a pathetic yes man who only cares about fighting with me instead of actually learning or debating.  The dumb Republican idea of never spending money ever doesn't work.  It's failed.  You had your chance with Bush and Pawlenty and the economy crashed.   Conservatives haven't changed their ideas about the economy in any way what so ever.   If you don't see how that makes you look stupid then I guess it will be a surprise when President Hillary Clinton humiliates whatever stupid clown you put up on 2016.     You can't say you disagree with Bush when you have the exact same ideas he did.  We've tried this crap of never spending money before.  You were discredited.   How have you changed since your stupid ideas crashed the economy?

CinBlueland

@MicheleBachmann@mingtranWe could say because it was a budget passed by the house and senate that Obama was a part of.. Bush just signed what the Dems wanted..

@MicheleBachmann@CinBluelandWhat are you talking about? I see the MN Senate which has both R's and D's in it, building a new building for a temporary need. Once the Capitol is restored we'll have the Professional and Impressive gov't building you think MN needs. With your line of thinking I'm almost thinking you're a Stadium supporter because having a modern and impressive stadium will make other states take us more seriously than states without modern stadiums.

And again, you're trying to attribute my conservative ideals with the crap the GOP has been putting up. You're a liberal, does that also mean you support the Klan like the Gores and Byrd? Are you as batshit insane as Maxine Waters?

You need to realize something. You are posting facts. Liberals do not listen to facts (well, they do, but only the cherry-picked ones that support their cause.)

Liberalism is a mental disease. MicheleBachmann proves it time and time again whenever it posts something on here.

I guess I would respect liberals more if they just admitted that they hate America and the free enterprise system. I would respect them more if they just admitted that they want America to be a socialist/communist nation. And there is nothing wrong with socialism/communism except for the fact that it has failed in every nation that tried to implement it.

FACT..

You clearly can't read and have no memory. Like I said before, the prez has little bearing on the economy, the FED does. They create the money supply. Obama did something like triple the budget. Expanding the budget is one of the few things the prez has the power to do that effects the money supply. I know you won't get it, this is for other people

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@mingtran The biggest items in the debt are the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, Medicare Part D, and the Bush Tax Cuts.   Only dumb racist people like you believe those things are Obama's fault.   The biggest item Obama has contributed is the stimulus which stopped the economy from crashing.  Obama inherited a crashing economy.    Bush inherited a surplus.

Why do you keep avoiding talking about the market crash that occurred at the end of Bush's 2nd term?   Care to explain how that was Obama's fault?

mingtran

The prez actually has very little bearing on monetary policy, the FED does. However, no prez in US history has supported expanding the budget as much as your boy Obama. Learn something, fool.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@CinBlueland I'm just curious why you felt the need to argue with reality.   Do you honestly believe Republicans better managed the economy?    Clinton and Obama haven't had massive market crashes occur when they were in charge.   That crash was linked to Republican policies of little regulation and no taxation.  Shouldn't the Republicans have to change their ideas to get credibility?   The policies of Fischbach were a massive failure.   I note up above you advocate for the money being kept in reserve in case of an emergency.   Tim Pawlenty raided emergency funds and used accounting gimmicks to balance the budget.    If you support emergency funds why are you defending Republican economic policies.  You think Tim not wanting to raise taxes so he can run for President is an emergency.   Republicans don't know how to run an economy.  They proved that.  If you are so smart, why do you defend their massive mistakes?

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@mingtran  The stats are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics which count unemployed people the same way for Bush vs. Obama.    Are you really so stupid you forgot the economic crisis at the end of the Bush presidency?   You forget the bailouts Bush caused?    Bush nearly caused a depression and Republicans have not changed a single thing about how they want to run an economy.    No one cares about stupid complaining from you losers anymore.   Learn a lesson and think of a new idea.

MicheleBachmann
MicheleBachmann topcommenter

@CinBlueland  The numbers don't lie.   They are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.   Nice deflection.

Minnesota needs a new building because Minnesota is a modern state.  Our government needs to be professional and impressive.  One new building isn't a big deal.   Republicans don't know how to spend money properly.  Last time they were in charge of the purse strings a bridge fell in the water and people died.
