Green Line LRT won't run late enough to get you home at bar close time

With the Green Line's official opening set for June 14, details about the line's logistics have now been released.

The Met Council says trains will run every 10 minutes during the day, and every 15 minutes in the evening, between roughly 5 a.m. and 1 a.m.

That means the train won't be available for those who are out and about at bar close time in the University Avenue area, though the Met Council could eventually do what it did for the Blue Line and begin offering special post-2 a.m. trips on weekends.

Another option for night owls is doing the old-fashioned thing and taking the bus. The Met Council says that with the advent of the Green Line, Route 50 bus services will be eliminated, but Route 16 will still operate (with less frequency, but 24 hours a day nonetheless).

For a rundown of all the Green Line-related bus service changes, click here.

With construction of the Green Line's physical infrastructure nearly complete, we asked the Met Council's Green Line spokesperson, Laura Baenen, what work remains to be done between now and June.

"Even when construction is complete, there's still training and testing that has to be done," she told us. Indeed, late next month, you'll see Green Line test runs headed down the tracks every 10 minutes or so.

Furthermore, about 20 of the 59 vehicles that will eventually run down the Green Line still need to be constructed at Siemens's Sacramento, California plant.

But in just a matter of months, trains with real passengers will be running down the Green Line. That'll be toast-worthy, but don't save your celebration for too close to last call, unless you want to ring in the existence of the Twin Cities' newest rail line with a bus or cab trip home.

You'd be risking your life taking the rail after dark and drunk.

Because having drunks standing around freezing waiting for a bus that may or may not be on time sounds like a great idea.... or, it's just another reason for people to drive drunk, I guess. Way to go Met Council! Please stop being so damned short-sighted.

Well one guy tried to kill me but I smashed him in the face. Another time I had toilet paper in a bag and gave a puking gal a roll which prompted her friend to give me $20 for being so kind. I'm just saying; it was bedlam at times and drunks do scary things. You should see all the arrests made in the hour before closing on Hennepin Ave stop, crazy sh*t.

The lightrail never ran past 1am for years... only on holidays like St Patty's day and new years eve. We had to make sure we were on that last train leaving downtown Minneapolis or we had a mighty expensive cab ride back to MOA.

lets be annoying and "INSIST" the Light Rail stays open later. What is the GD point in dumping all this tax payer money into something that isn't %100 convenient?!? I want at the very least to get from MPLS to STP at anytime....that is the "wave" of the future..."our future" COME ON!

...and don't kill people while driving drunk.

I guess I will have to find somewhere else to get stabbed.

Boo.....only reason I would have ridden it.

MTC could have helped cut down on drunk driving but guess they really didn't care all that much either...

OMG I used to ride the 2:18am home from downtown to Minnehaha stop and people just barf left and right and pick fights.

I hate driving in Minneapolis. This was going to maybe get me to go check out some of their nightlife. Guess not now.

Let's make a public outcry and see this decision reversed.

Ah, yes the old 2 hour bus ride for a 20 minute drive; while drunk.

It's not like Turf Club is even open that often any more.. They just changed their open hours after First Ave bought them without making any notice...

Hope they change Fri Sat nights to 2AM+; this is some bs, & the gov complains about the number of DUI's & or deaths from DUI's. Maybe they should do something proactive about the problem and keep it open until 2:30 or 24/7. This is ridiculous; if the gov actually cared to lower the number of DUI's this timeline wouldn't even be a question but they obviously need the money DUI's bring in. #disappointed

Driving drunk is always an option. That's using your head, lawmakers! Now go have some more tea.

That is so bull crap, what if I want to bar hop in Minneapolis now I can't get home......

Looks like the PD's gotta make their DUI quotas.. what a waste. Pointlesss now if you ask me.

Why would MTC not want to run at least once after 2AM? Think public safety, folks.

Wendy Hendrickson

That is a ridiculously busy time on that route but once it's up and running they always adjust the schedule to fit what people need/want

It isn't just bar patrons that need the LRT running into the morning. There are nightclub workers, restaurant staff, hotel staff and shift workers up and down that line

If getting home costs more than one drink, your city will never have a night life, music scene, creative community, etc... those that are talented enough to afford it will leave.

Adam Klugherz
Adam Klugherz

Exactly... though I've never gotten a DUI I know I'm a minority within my friend group for still having a license and car... almost every single friend of mine that is without a license says the same thing: "I wouldn't have driven but I can't afford taxis." I just don't see this state as welcoming to night life... not worth the risk. I made the mistake of taking a taxi once, it was $35 to get from saint paul to west bank, not worth it... I hate to admit it, but I'd rather risk driving drunk...

Kareem Munroe

If it did go till bar close; how would Minnesota snatch up all that fine money from DUI's?

Adam Klugherz
Adam Klugherz

The cynics here seem to be missing the point... ANY legitimate city has mass transit that runs at LEAST until the night life spots close... Otherwise your city has peaked. As sometime interested in working in the entertainment/night life industry, this is going to be a major factor in my very soon upcoming decision to move out of the state... I already have the means to start what I've been planning here, it all comes down to if the city is right for my business, and this tells me it's not.

Adam Klugherz
Adam Klugherz

This is just one more reason I'm probably (regretfully) going to move to Colorado...

Larry Miller

If you've ever rode the 16 you would know why you'd probably just skip the night out instead of taking that bus.

Larry Miller

I actually this would be great for a night on the town in St. Paul, but I guess St. Paul isn't interested in taking my money.

24/7. Or we have wasted our time , money and inconvenience for 3 years!

midwestexplorer81

I guess you better tell that to all the business owners and people that hang out downtown. Tell them they don't have a nightlife and they should leave because they can't take a train home after 2. You sound pretty ridiculous.

midwestexplorer81
midwestexplorer81 topcommenter

If they can't afford a taxi how the heck do they afford the high priced drinks downtown and to tip the servers?  Sounds like your friends have their priorities all messed up to me. The price of one DUI could buy you hundreds of cab rides.

what kind of drunk are you?  if you can't get totally shit faced by two fisting long islands until 1 minute before close you're not going anywhere?  google "splitting" and then find some help
