Homophobic Vikings coach Mike Priefer's son enjoys calling people "gay" on Twitter

Quote taken from Chris Kluwe's account of a 2012 Vikings special teams meeting.
An online campaign is underway in hopes of preventing Priefer from ever getting another NFL coaching job.
In Chris Kluwe's must-read account of the chain of events culminating in his release by the Vikings, the biggest villain is special teams coach, rumored head coaching candidate, and apparent homophobe Mike Priefer.

:::: UPDATES ::::
-- Is Kluwe telling the truth about Coach Mike Priefer's alleged "nuke the gays" comment?
-- Mike Priefer: "I vehemently deny the allegations made by Chris Kluwe"

Kluwe writes that during one meeting, Priefer said, "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows."

So perhaps it shouldn't come as any surprise that Priefer's son, Michael Priefer Jr., has an openly homophobic Twitter account.

Here are some of the gay-unfriendly tweets Priefer, whose Twitter profile references both Johnny Manziel and Philippians 4:13, has published (as compiled by this imgur user):

(Since we started working on this post, Priefer Jr.'s Twitter account has become protected.)

In his piece, Kluwe writes that his main goal is "to make sure that Mike Priefer never holds a coaching position again in the NFL, and ideally never coaches at any level."

"It's inexcusable that someone would use his status as a teacher and a role model to proselytize on behalf of his own doctrine of intolerance, and I hope he never gets another opportunity to pass his example along to anyone else," Kluwe continues.

Trolling his kid's Twitter account for this story is just laughable.  It's a HS kid, and the context in which he is using the word gay, is consistent with many non-homophobic kids use of the term across the country.  It doesn't mean crap to this story.

I find it laughable that someone is saying, just because people are young and say stupid things and everyone does it, it's okay to insult a group of people and say stupid things in a PUBLIC tweet, and not have any repercussions from it. ESPECIALLY when your dad is in the public eye, like in this situation. Open your eyes to the bigger picture, and quit with the tunnel vision already. It's NOT okay to hate on someone. It's NOT okay to bully someone because they are different than you. End of story, end of subject.

" Q:Here's the thing that bothers me here. You wrote the reason you published these allegations is because you never want Mike Priefer to coach in the NFL or anywhere else ever again. To me, that comes across as petty. It comes across as you're trying to ruin somebody's life.

A: I would phrase that in the form of a question: Who's no longer punting in the NFL?

Q: That's you.

A: Yes. That's correct. So, whose life was already ruined by the actions of one person?

Q: Well, your career is ruined. With Mike, it is his life. Now he's forever painted as a homophobe …

A: Because he is a homophobe. That's the whole point: Actions have consequences. If I was allowed to do my job, if I was allowed to finish out my contract – I had punted well for the Vikings for eight years. I only had one year left on my deal. How hard is it to just be like, 'OK, yeah, Kluwe said some stuff, but he can still punt the football? Let him finish out his deal and be like, no, we're not renewing your contract.' Fine. Whatever. I can respect that. But no, it had to be, we're getting rid of Chris. We don't want Chris anymore."

Sounds like he's most upset that he lost his job than anything else and now he has an axe to grind.

It's too bad that Kluwe wasn't brave enough to say this when it happened.

I don't know how much times have changed, but I'm not anti-gay or a homophobe, but when I was kid most everyone used gay pretty often. "I can't believe Matt got grounded, that's so gay." Yada yada. Was it wrong?  Maybe. There were even a few that are gay now that threw the word around in the same manner. Are they homophobes or insensitive? No, it's stuff kids do. Most don't hyper-analyze things like adults, and they aren't as worried about being politically correct.

catpurinn-That's simple.   #Nohomo or just "no homo" is a running joke among younger people.    If you look around the internet its pretty universal, basically a response that is added onto something as a joke.   "Yeah, Joe's really leaned out, he looks great.....no homo."

Yes, its stupid and immature and you commonly hear it being said by people who are young enough to say stupid and immature thngs.   Its hardly a slur.   Nothing this kid said isn't being said by other kids his age.   Its just how they talk, the word gay has morphed from meaning happy to meaning homosexual to also meaning lame.

If you listen to your average 16 year old talk, when you hear them say "well that's gay", it'll most likely be synonymous with "wow, that sucks."

I think this whole article is ridiculous.    This is how teenagers talk and the more people tell them to stop using the word "gay" in that fashion, the more they do it.   Its not hateful, just youthful ignorance that people eventually grow out of.   However to make it seem like Priefer's kid is the only one doing it is plainly ridiculous.

For those trying to say the son isn't gay bashing or as bad as his father, explain the #Nohomo part of his tweets. And if he feels he wasn't doing anything wrong, why hide them? That just made your father look more guilty by hiding them. Can you say damage control? Too bad, too late for that now.  I'm inclined to believe Kluwe. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and IMHO I think this proves his father's denials are lies. I hope the owner of the Vikings gets to see this. I also hope those who heard Priefer's comments act like real men, and have the decency to back Kluwe up. Priefer, I think it's time to start looking for another job and sign up for unemployment benefits, it may be awhile before someone hires you. There's no room for hate and intolerance in this world, there's already too much of it here already.

In addition to the weird obsession with everything being gay, junior also seems to be clueless about the difference between "your" and "you're."

cambruce701

Is Junior just an adolescent?...at first I thought he was an adult but apparently not, the tweets look like something from a 12 yr old.  What I can't figure is why would Kluwe make up a story like that?...if it wasn't true that would come out eventually (so to speak) but in any case given the machismo that permeates the NFL it never had any chance to help him career-wise or financially.  In other words, he certainly had no reason to invent it.

I read this article expecting to read gay bashing tweets.  While I don't agree with his use of the word 'gay,' I don't know that it necessarily constitutes labelling the kid homophobic or a bigot.  Ignorant?  Definitely.  He's probably never worked or met a gay person.  I guess I was expecting something much worse than calling his friends 'gay.'  I believe Kluwe's allegations, but I think pulling this kid's tweets is kind of silly.  They are far from the alleged comments of his father.

@Ondaas1 think the apple falls far from the tree? that is why his kids homophobic comments are germaine to this discussion. and, btw, suburbanpa is correct. public comments are for the public. don't want your comments being public? restrict access or stay off of social sites. but do not cry foul when your public words are used against you.

@Ondaas1In principle I agree with you, but in this case, it is hardly "going after" the kid.  Priefer Jr. posted this garbage in a public forum and all this item did was compile it.

You've got holier-than-thou posters on here that apparently never did or said anything stupid before though.   It must be amazing to live life in a bubble of perfection, knowing your every word and deed is beyond reproach.

I hear kids say stuff like "that's gay" or "no homo."    Is it a slur against gay people?  No.  Just teens saying dumb stuff like all teens do, eventually they grow out of it and become more conscious of what they say, but to somehow depict your average teenager as some ridiculous hatemonger because they wrote that something is "gay" is absurd.

It seems that there are those who are quick to judgment, to point fingers, when in reality, we don't even know if Kluwe is telling the truth about any of this or if this is a case of an employee who was terminated, lashing out at his old boss to get even.

jenniferllindquist

I would NEVER under ANY circumstances allow my kids to talk like that or let it slide as "typical teen slang"  They are raised to know you don't talk about people like that and that using gay as a negative term is wrong, because there is NOTHING wrong with being gay. This very much has to do with parenting, the only peopel who I hear using the terms "no homo" and "that's so gay" are people who have parents who aren't raising them to be very open minded!

@cambruce701

Why would he wait until his NFL career was over to make claims like that...oh yeah attention.    He stated in another interview that he was perfectly content to keep playing for the Vikings, but then they went and cut him.   He had no problem taking their paycheck and would have kept on doing so as long as long as his contract remained.

Seeing as the guy had tryout's with 3 other teams this past season and didn't make a single roster, it could be that the game has passed him by and this is a chance for him to get 15 minutes of fame, put himself back in the headlines, plug a book...etc.

It's interesting that he waited until his career was over and nobody else was going to sign him to make these allegations, strong courage.

@pfaf0021  Agreed. nothing here is homophobic. Insensitive but not homophobic.  I believe what Kluwe says about this kid's dad, but come on...a bunch of adults bullying a KID like people are doing in these comments is a million times worse than what he said.  Most kids say stuff like this. it's not right but it's not said with homophobic intent.
edit: I have no idea why some weird video is attached to my comment.

@DennisDugan@zereoue20holier than thou? Actually, we're simply just not racists, bigots, or homophobes. And we're smart enough not to publicly say vile crap like this. I'm so tired of the lame excuse of "don't act like you've never done anything stupid". Stupid? Sure. Hate speech? Nope. Deal with it. ANd it you can't authenticate Twitter posts and what he said via his interview, then GTFO the internets.

catpurinn
catpurinn

@DennisDugan@catpurinn So what you are saying is, it's okay to insult gay people because they are young and stupid and everyone does it? Lame excuse. You're saying it's okay to joke about insulting a group of people because they are young and stupid, and weren't taught any better. I call it bullying. It's in bad taste and due to bad parenting. His father is a bully and that's why his son is one also. I think you are ignorant for calling it hardly a slur. Apparently you don't know the meaning of #nohomo. Look up the definition and educate yourself.

"nohomo: A term used by straight guys who are insecure with their masculinity."

"Used to define something that could be interpreted homosexually as otherwise."

"When you say something that sounds gay, but you don't mean it to"

"what a straight/non homosexual person says immediately after saying something that can possibly be perceived as a homosexual comment/thought/feeling"

I think you made a ridiculous argument, and stuck up for a badly behaved punk who thinks it's okay to insult gay people, just because his father does it too. It's what he was taught, and the environment he grew up in. If you think it's not hateful, then you haven't got a clue. When daddy mutters "those damn gays" around the house, children hear it and think it's okay to say the same thing, and act the same way.

"  If you listen to your average 16 year old talk, when you hear them say "well that's gay", it'll most likely be synonymous with "wow, that sucks."

I could see that, MAYBE, if the #nohomo hadn't been added to his tweets. And even if it wasn't, it's still blatantly gay bashing, and no excuse you make for that kind of behavior will make it any better. If you can't see that, then you're blind, and purposely being obtuse. Just because "everyone does it" doesn't make it right. BTW,  I or this article didn't infer that Priefer's kid is the only one doing this. They pointed out that he IS doing it, period. It's wrong, and he needs to be taught that it's wrong, and be more tolerant of people who are different than he is. If his father can't see that, he has no right being in the position he is in, and should be fired. Time will tell if he really did say these homophobic things. And if he did, he needs to be out of a job pronto.

Stop whining because you know I'm right. That was a very lame and childish rebuttal. How old are you? 12? Are you friends with this kid?
