Is Kluwe telling the truth about Coach Mike Priefer's alleged "nuke the gays" comment?

kluweleber.jpg
Questioned by Leber (left), Kluwe wouldn't name names about who heard Priefer's anti-gay comment, citing concerns for his former teammates' careers.
:::: UPDATE :::: Vikings officials announced this afternoon that they've retained former Chief Justice of Minnesota Supreme Court Eric Magnuson and former U.S. Department of Justice Trial Attorney Chris Madel to investigate Kluwe's accusations.

:::: UPDATE II, January 6 ::::

Kluwe has also lawyered up: (Original post) In his Deadspin expose about losing his job with the Vikings, Chris Kluwe alleges that special teams Coach Mike Priefer made the following statement during a team meeting: "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows."

RELATED: Homophobic Vikings coach Mike Priefer's son enjoys calling people "gay" on Twitter

Kluwe doesn't provide specifics about the circumstances of that fateful meeting, but on the radio this morning, former Vikings linebacker and current KFAN host Ben Leber said he believes the shockingly homophobic statement must've occurred, if it happened at all, during a "a specialists meeting."

That meeting would've been attended by Priefer, Kluwe, kicker Blair Walsh, and long snapper Cullen Loeffler, Leber said. But yesterday, Walsh released a statement where he blasts Kluwe and backs Priefer 100 percent.

"The allegations made today are reprehensible and totally not compatible with what Mike Priefer stands for," Walsh writes. "I have had countless conversations and interactions with Coach Priefer, and I personally can attest to his integrity and character. His professionalism in the workplace is exemplary, and I firmly believe that my teammates would whole-heartedly agree."

But under cross-examination by Leber this morning, Kluwe said his former teammates in the meeting with him that day will have his back if names have to be named.

"If it comes down to it, we'll do what we have to do," Kluwe said, alluding to the possibility Priefer could sue him for defamation of character.

If Leber's analysis is correct about the circumstances of the meeting and Kluwe is telling the truth, then we're left to assume that Cullen Loeffler is the teammate Kluwe believes will confirm his account of Priefer's statement. We've reached out to Cullen for comment and will keep you posted.

On KFAN, meanwhile, Leber and Kluwe engaged in a highly entertaining verbal sparring match, with Leber at one point chastising Kluwe for not trying to engage Priefer in a "man to man" conversation about their locker room tension.

Leber also criticized Kluwe for using profanity and crass language in his writings about marriage equality while he was still employed by the Vikings.

"The approach can come off not befitting of the shield and the team and stuff like that," Leber said, referring to the NFL logo.

But Kluwe, as he's wont to do, didn't back down and said what he wrote is the truth.

"It's perfectly fair to draw your own conclusions," Kluwe told Leber. "If you think that I'm being bitter and that these are sour grapes and that I'm out to ruin Mike Priefer's career, that's fine. Thats your right to think that, I can't or wont change your mind. But the thing is, is that when I write this stuff down, it's because this is what happened to me."

What a waste, hiring attorneys and such to "investigate," while words tend to not leave a mark on the they're spoken into. Polygraph both of them and be done with it.

Football is a stupid sport... I don't really mind that it exists, I just wish our government would stop subsidizing it...

So was Kluwe.. and we could have made a number of better picks than a punter last draft...

Interesting that no other Viking players have stepped forward to confirm Kluwe's allegations. Kluwe claims the comments were made in a room with other players present. Sounds like someone is getting desperate for attention and money

What about all the idiots in the nfl shooting themselves out clubbing or running people over with their cars or just flat out murdering people and animals!? Some of them still play. WTF

Guess the coach could of said it.  Just always feel Kluwe has a starvation to be in the spotlight.  At first it was natural but as time went on it had a scent of desperation.  The coach is under fire for anti gay comments and Kluwe sees this as a possibility to be in the media again so he takes it.   Get over yourself and move on.

Blair Walsh wouldn't lose his job. He's actually good.

I like seeing people's immediate reactions to this. Indicative of the type of person you are. Those talking badly about Kluwe now probably didn't agree with him when he spoke out in 2012. The truth is that we don't know if what Kluwe is saying is true, but from what we know about the NFL environment, his comments were different and certainly scrutinized.

If you had ever listened to kluwe on the 93x half ass morning show, you would know the real truth. Kluwe is a little bitch. His trust fund money is gone, cut from two teams, and nobody was talking about him. (period)

Yeah he is fucking broke and nobody is talking about him.

I guess the real question is, if there was audio tape Priefer saying this stuff, then would all people's stance be the same? I'm not saying this or that, it's just interesting to see the commentary.

Steve Schmidt

If this were to be true, in any other line of work, all personnel and staff would be dismissed with a swift and quick investigation. Just seeing the commentary from some of the rubes here let's us all see that many people take issue with tolerance and indifference. BUT - this is the NFL. Real World Rules don't apply and if anything, Kluwe is going against a system that would never let him win. The NFL is a brutal, testosterone driven sport and my belief is that you would find many fans, and furthermore players, that would side with anybody taking a stance against this. In the end, this will be old news just like the ordeal with the Dolphins, w/Riley Cooper, etc. Headline of the week. Nothing to see here, move on, (once all of the media sources squeeze every ounce out of this that they can.)

Kluwe will never work in the NFL again. Why? Because he's a liability shooting his mouth off. No ownership will take a chance on him. He only hurt himself. It's always "someone else's fault." Sounds like mommy and daddy did not do a good job with little Chris growing up. What a self-desctructive baby!

Why don't you step up and offer that service to him yourself, Reid? I'm sure he'd take you up on your generous offer.

I wouldn't doubt that Piefer said it. I've heard very similar things from homophobic's but instead of nuked, put on a island and shot.

I think it was more of a Vikings PR move by having another kicker make a statement...idk for sure obviously but that was my 1st thought when I saw Walsh's statement on the news this morning.

At this point, not suing for defamation/libel is a practical admission of guilt by Priefer.

I think this reeks of poopy-diaper Kluwe poisoning the well for Priefer's job prospects in MN (mission accomplished I would propose)...pointing out that a football coach is a backwards-headed bully is like pointing out that the sky is blue, but I would be curious to see this go to court. The burden of proof is on Kluwe. He better hope he ran this by whomever was in that meeting before he sent it to Deadspin.

Kluwe got owned by Ben Leber, it was awesome. Kluwe had nothing, it's well worth a listen!

I dont' understand why Blair Walsh feels he needs to defend Piefer. Has he been of accused of being gay with a path on his back? or he's not losing his job because basically he's the one winning the Vikings games with his kicks?

I can't speak to why he was let go from the Vikings, but I admire his character very much and find it hard to believe he would lie about the details of the story and the alleged Priefer comments.

I heard his interview this morning on the Stephanie Miller Show (AM950). Where are you getting your "facts" from - your ass?  Let's see some proof that Kluwe is "broke."

It's OK, Kluwe seems to have plenty of media friends that will continue to help him sell books. It's only a matter of time before another book comes along.

@MNjoe I agree; anyone currently on the payroll is going to be very quiet until they are in an environment that they are unlikely to face retaliation.  I am glad the owner of the Vikings is taking this seriously.
