Kevin Love: J.J. Barea's bench behavior "kind of pisses me off"

Where's the love? K-Love and Barea have a history of clashing.
Kevin Love put his teammates on blast following last night's heartbreaking 104-103 loss to the Phoenix Suns at the Target Center.

"We can't have two guys sitting at the end of the bench, who play good minutes, just sitting there and not getting up at timeouts," Love told reporters after the game. "We all need to be in this together. That kind of pisses me off. We're supposed to be a team."

"It's to a point that where those two guys, if and when I did that last year... they would have aired me out," Love went on. "It's two guys we expect more from them, and I think they expect more from themselves."

"I'm not trying to single anybody out, and I don't want to make it bigger than it is. That was a team we needed to beat tonight. Even guys that didn't play any minutes, we need to have a team on the bench that's really in it together," he said.

Though Love didn't name names, all indications are the "two guys" he's referring to are Dante Cunningham, who played a season-low 11 minutes last night, and backup point guard J.J. Barea.

Love and Barea have a history of clashing dating back to nearly two years ago when they had to be physically separated on the bench during a loss in Sacramento. More recently, Love called out the entire bench, Barea included, following a similarly heartbreaking two-point loss to Dallas on December 30, telling reporters, "We need to get our bench going... I don't know what we need to do to light a fire under them, but five points [from the bench] is not okay."

Barea didn't take that round of criticism lying down, telling reporters, "I definitely don't like it."

But the 2013-14 Timberwolves have bigger problems than the Love-Barea beef. Last night's loss dropped them to a ghastly 0-10 in games decided by four points or less, and a season that began with high hopes is approaching its midway point with the team still on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

We're 0-10 in games decided by four points or less, I'm sure he's pretty pissed about that too

NOBODY SEEMS TO REALIZE THAT JJ CAN SCORCH ANY FKN TEAM BY HIMSELF.  JJ IS 2ND BEST PLAYER ON TEAM AND HES ON THE FKN BENCH!!!???

This is all Rick Adelman's fault.  He's doing a terrible job.  0-10 in close games?   That's coaching.   Not players.   Derrick Williams, Shabazz, Dieng, Schved, and Rubio have all regressed under Adelman.   Fire his stupid kid and get real coaches in here because the crazy Grandpa isn't doing his job.    This team was loaded with talent and its just not coming together.   That isn't the players fault, that is the coach's fault.   The bench has sucked all year but Derrick Williams and Shabazz never got a chance.   What kind of idiot sees the bench fail and fail again yet refuses to try anything new.

AMEN. K-Love's a second to third option on a championship team. And I don't dislike him--most nights--but he's still not a superstar.

Take out Rubio? For WHO? Screws Loose Alexy? Lil' Man JJ? Maybe if we'd drafted Trey Burke. Face it, we're thin at the 1 spot.

K Love needs to smile and enjoy playing, because he aint inspiring his teammates.

Barea is a cancer! Short mAn syndrome. The Jordan of Puerto Rico can take it elsewhere. How often does Cuban deal someone that is on the rise. He sells high and we bought. Cut bait

Kevin Love shoots 4-20 last night, misses his first 2 free throws of 3 when he has a chance to tie and/or beat OKC the game before the 76er game, and he's sounding off on his teammates?! Maybe we need to put in a real scorer and take out minute hogging Rubio to help us win these close games (0-9 by 4 points or less) we keep losing and practice every damn day on playing defense down the stretch!!!!

Is this the same guy that missed 3 STRAIGHT FREE THROWS to win the game against OKC??

The only piece on that team worth keeping is Rubio...everything else can go - from the top of mgmt and coaches on down.

Want to win? Play hard - then make shots. The Wolves play really hard, but first they need point guards that can get their own shots - there are three players on this team that can get their own shots, and they're not point guards - that's all. Ricky Rubio can't - especially at the end of games - they have been in a position to win at the end of just about every game - there is no more that can be asked of a coaching staff. Secondly, how many "bunnies" (easy shots in the paint) does this team have to miss before you can blame losses on it? Rubio needs to put himself in the mix as a scoring threat in order to spread defenses. The other guys need to concentrate better around the hoop and make those easy shots - that one thing alone, would have added those 10 wins in my opinion. Other than these things - I love the way this team plays - if they can stay healthy, and make more easy shots, they will win many more games than they will lose and compete in the play offs.

Having a leader to yank teammates in line is a good thing.

K love did what a leader is supposed to do. He called out the guys that were throwing temper tantrums on the bench. As for the blame in these horrible close losses, how about putting it right where it belongs? Rigid Rick is mediocre at best and is the biggest problem for this team, next to bringing mediocre Flip back as GM and head coach in waiting.

Easy man...I seriously thought you were being serious. I've always said they need to invent a font for sarcasm.

Love is a defensive liability and a stat stuffer. We'd be better off with Aldridge or Cousins at this point. Trade him now or in a few years he will be gone with nothing in return.

Yes I am aware. Unfortunately sarcasm is lost on you, and the internet.

When you shoot 4-20 and play absolutely no defense it's easy to pass the buck. If it weren't for the bench and Pek The Wolves would have been blown out last night. Trade this guy now and get rid of Rubio too while we can still get a 4th rounder for him.

He should stop running his mouth to the media if he's so focused about working together as a team and just let it stay between the players. He thinks he's a super star and just wants out of MN, in all honestly: NY or LA once his contract is up.

You do realize D-Will hasn't been a Twolf for like two months, right? He got his chances and blew them all. Schved has recently found somewhat of a spark. How does Rubio digress under Adelman when Adelman is the only NBA coach he's ever had? Do you even watch basketball?

You should really just hang it up. You're horrible at troll blogging.

@mingtran They are below 500 and 0-10 in close games.  Only an idiot thinks the coach doesn't have something to do with that.   The Timberwolves have spent a lot of money.   They have young stars in their prime.  They should be winning.  Instead, players are not developing and they keep losing.   That's on the coach.

MicheleBachmann

@mingtran I don't know ming.   What do you mean by worst comment?    I mean your comment about how doctors were oppressing you was pretty stupid.   Like its one of the stupidest things I've ever read.   But I loved it because it proved what a stupid cowardly doofus you are.    Most normal humans would vote your racist and homophobic comments as the worst comments on City Pages.   No matter how stupid an opinion is it isn't as stupid as your racist homophobic bullshit.
