Megabus moving to Union Depot

Megabus.jpg
Megabus's St. Paul stop is moving out of the Midway Shopping Center parking lot and into the more comfortable, climate-controlled confines of the Union Depot.

The change goes into effect January 29, Megabus spokesman Mike Alvich told us this afternoon.

The low-cost city-to-city bus service is in the midst of a national effort "to arrange stops in inter-modal locations where our customers can connect with local bus or transit services," Alvich said, and the move to Union Depot and its connections with the Green Line and Amtrak trains will help toward that end.

Alvich said the move won't involve any immediate changes to Megabus service in the Twin Cities.

In Minneapolis, the company plans to continue loading and unloading passengers from a parking ramp near Target Field.

I go down to Chicago several times a year and the MegaBus is a great way to go. I usually pay less than $20 round trip and next trip I have a $2.50 round trip ticket. I save a ton on gas and can sleep all the way down. The bus drops at Union Station in downtown Chicago so it's a short walk to the L from there. How can Amtrak charge over $200 for that same round trip?

I like the megabus.com - we take it every year to Lollapalooza in Chicago. We save a lot of money & don't have to pay for parking - the rest of you are snobs!

What took so long? Granted, there's not much to offer at the depot right now regarding alternate transit options, but isn't this the reason $240M was dumped into the old depot? #pork

@MNjoeThe bus be cheaper, and it will probably stop at a convenience store along the way, but it's a rolling prison compared to the train, where you can get up, walk to a concession car and sit in a lounge rather than be stuck in your seat with one tiny biffy in the back corner. Having wi-fi on the bus, brilliant option in this day and age, some Amtrak lines still don't offer it.

@TweetsAreYours @MNjoe Yeah - rolling prison is a good description, Except for a 1/2 hour stop in Mauston, Wi (about halfway) you're in that seat the whole time - I've only used that biffy once in a couple of dozen trips. If you can sleep through it or bring a good book it's not so bad. I just rechecked Amtrak and I see the prices are way down - the rt is now a little over $100. But I know how to get the cheap fares so I'll stick with Megabus.
