Minnesota is second only to New Hampshire in terms of the best states to live in, according to a list put together by Politico's Margaret Slattery.

SEE ALSO: David Letterman shares his "top 10 least successful Minnesota businesses"

Slattery's list "rounded up 14 different state rankings from reputable sources like the Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the FBI, and on important factors such as high school graduation rates, per capita income, life expectancy and crime rate."

She then averaged out the rankings to put together her list.

An email sent to Slattery seeking more details about her methodology wasn't returned.

:::: UPDATE :::: DFL takes credit for Minnesota being named second-best state

Here's where Minnesota clocked in for each of Slattery's 14 criteria:

Per-capita wealth: 12th ($30,656)
Lowest unemployment: 9th (4.6 percent)
Lowest poverty rates: 10th (11.2 percent)
Highest home ownership: 2nd (73 percent)
Highest percentage of high school grads: 2nd (91.9 percent)
Longest life expectancy: 2nd (81.1 years)
Lowest infant mortality rate: 10th (5.6 percent)
Lowest obesity rate: 13th (24.7 percent)
Highest reported well-being: 3rd (68.9 percent)
Highest math scores according to eighth grade test scores: 3rd (294)
Highest reading scores according to eighth grade test scores: 8th (268)
Least income inequality: 14th (GINI coefficient of 0.4441)
Lowest crime rate: 9th (230.9)

NOT my favorite state! I've lived in several other states that had much better weather, people, state laws, and taxes.

Yes in general, its not a diverse place despite those populations of people. I am very aware of the large Hmong population in east St Paul and large somolian poputaltions in the west bank, south Mpls and Eden Prairie.

Super white? We have the highest Somali and Hmong population in the country.

Nothing to do? Camping, canoeing, fishing, ice fishing, cook outs, sledding, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skiing, golfing, snorkeling, swim and tan on sandy beaches, bon fires, jet skiing, sailing, biking, hiking, running, restaurants, bars, theatres, clubs, museums, water parks, sporting events, casinos, big concerts, local music and art, country living, city living, caves, parks, waterfalls, cliff jumping, rock climbing, etc. Minnesota has much of the entertainment other places do. Some places can't brag about both summer and winter fun the way we can though. We may not be as culturally diverse as New York, but few places are! We have big cities without too much of the dirt and crime a big city brings and we have large country areas without it feeling overwhelming. Some places have tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, mudslides, or monsoons. We have a few tornadoes and floods but mainly blizzards and sub zero temps. One can complain about the area they live in or they can boast about it. It's just a point of view and a choice to see the positives or the negatives.

I remember the signs in ep and Chan saying money magazines #1 and #2 cities to live in the US. Growing up on the tonka/ep/Chan border I always thought to myself, "who in the hell comes up with these lists?". I couldnt wait to move out of the area.

I'm from Minneapolis, I live in NYC where we see culture. And yes, compare it to any other major US city, lack of cultural, super white. I lived in the twin cities for almost 30 years.

why would living in a state with some of the highest taxes in all of the u.s. be one of the best to live in?

^ Not cultural? Have you ever been in minneapolis?

Nick Merchant

Only in Minnesota do people have to keep justifying why they live there with lists like this. Minnesota is great and all but lacks cultural and gets boring fast, and then there's the weather. Good economy, good job market, great place to raise kids and all that. Outside of that I can think of many places I would rather live.

That list is crap, just look where New Jersey is ranked, please. You couldn't pay me to move across the Hudson to Jersey. Anyways, I love Minnesota but I can think of many other places I would want to live first.

They obviously didn't do their home work very well! Minnesota has had to shut down twice in the past eight years, making pay freezes for state employees, while politicians still received a wage,,,Its disgraceful ...
