St. Paul named best romantic city, and Chris Coleman says LRT will only make it lovelier

USA Today readers think you're looking at North America's best romantic getaway.
Even though voting occurred amid a polar vortex that has many of us wearing decidedly unsexy long undies and thermals, St. Paul has been named the "Best Romantic North American Getaway" by 10Best/USA Today.

St. Paul somehow edged places like Santa Fe, New Orleans, and Honolulu for the "Readers' Choice" award. And reached for comment today, Mayor Chris Coleman said he doesn't expect St. Paul to be dislodged from the top of the list anytime soon.

Asked whether he ever expected St. Paul to win top honors as a romantic destination during his tenure, Coleman said, "Absolutely -- are you kidding?"

"It's such a charming city, whether you're strolling down Summit  Avenue or taking in a concert at Mears Park with the water streaming by," he continued.

But is your city really more romantic than Minneapolis? we asked Coleman.

"They're fine for what they are, but they're not romantic," Coleman said. "They're big, hustle and bustle, and we're kinda intimate."

Asked whether there are good public policy reasons to believe St. Paul might get even more romantic, Coleman quickly cited Green Line LRT, which will open on June 14.

"With light rail it'll be real romantic and even easier to get to," Coleman said.

Such b.s!!! This place is for the birds. Cannot wait to move back to COLORADO in a few short months. I've experienced nothing but rude people, bad food and worse drivers. Who seriously sets a speed limit at 45 and 55? Redic!

Whoever voted for St Paul has never been to Santa Fe but that is fine with me. The less attention given to New Mexico the better but it is not called the Land of Enchantment for nothing...

@atrupar Oh! So that's why St. Paul is never plowed...in hopes it drives people to the LRT. It all makes sense. Nice try @mayorcoleman

To the naysayers - any place is as romantic as you want it to be. I guess it all depends on how you define it. By most standards, I think St. Paul fits the bill nicely. St. Paul is absolutely wonderful with some very quaint and historic areas filled with charm. There are lovely restaurants, a beautiful riverfront, cozy B&B's, festivals, the Farmer's Market, etc. Those looking for club life can catch a cab (or soon, the train) to Minneapolis for that style of entertainment. I personally think that the Twin Cities are a package deal and one of our cities winning is really a win for both. Cheers to both!

It's true that St. Paul is beautiful. At the same time, other cities have just as much -- if not more -- to offer, in terms of nature, architecture, weather, etc.

Laurel, I grew up in Saint Paul in the Crocus Hill neighborhood; near F. Scott Fitzgerald's home, near the Cathedral, and J. J. Hill house, and I agree with your comment :)

My husband and I got married there in August. It has a ton of romantic, classic locations that really let MN beauty shine through! It has museums, the Capitol building, restaurants, festivals, the river, the Landmark Center, etc. I'm in Chicago now, but it just doesn't quite match up.

It's romantic because couples can take long walks alone through the empty streets...

I agree, St. Paul is gorgeous and a wonderful place to live, in my opinion. The naysayers can stay in Minneapolis with their night life and higher cost of living!

What the heck? Which person comes up with this bull...?! I would rather say Minneapolis is a lot more beautiful when it comes to romance!! St. Paul?! No!

That said... St Paul is truly architecturally lovely. It's just not where I would steer a tourist seeking a romantic getaway.

St Paul must have paid some serious money to a PR executive. This is "bunk" unless having nothing to do after 5 PM is romantic to you. Or maybe a hockey game is romantic. I once paid for a nice hotel room to stay in St Paul after a concert and once the show let out nothing was open! No offense to my friends Dean and Marie.

The list says "romantics" not "club style". Saint Paul is gorgeous. It's beauty comes from its architecture (plenty of Art Deco and old world aesthetics) and from the grand and historical Victorian mansions and homes. It is sad that most people commenting here have not taken a stroll through Downtown or it's neighborhoods (Summit-Hill; Crocus Hill). Oh, and driving through, by, or near St. Paul does not constitute knowing St. Paul.

You might want to pay less attention to the Grammys, and more attention to grammar.
