Vikings push back against Chris Kluwe with defensive statement

Kluwevikingsquote.jpg
The Vikings released a statement late this afternoon pushing back against Chris Kluwe's charges that the organization fired him for his support of gay marriage.

"Any notion that Chris was released from our football team due to his stance on marriage equality is entirely inaccurate and inconsistent with team policy," the statement reads. "Chris was released strictly based on his football performance."

The 3:30 p.m. statement makes clear that this is a full-blown scandal and the Vikings organization is in crisis mode.

The statement also indicates that the team is reviewing the allegations of homophobic language and behavior.

Here is the press release:

The Minnesota Vikings were made aware of Chris Kluwe's allegations for the first time today. We take them very seriously and will thoroughly review this matter.

As an organization, the Vikings consistently strive to create a supportive, respectful and accepting environment for all of our players, coaches and front office personnel. We do not tolerate discrimination at any level. The team has long respected our players' and associates' individual rights, and, as Chris specifically stated, Vikings ownership supports and promotes tolerance, including on the subject of marriage equality. Because he was identified with the Vikings, Chris was asked to be respectful while expressing his opinions. Team ownership and management also repeatedly emphasized to Chris that the Vikings would not impinge on his right to express his views.

Any notion that Chris was released from our football team due to his stance on marriage equality is entirely inaccurate and inconsistent with team policy. Chris was released strictly based on his football performance.

We will have further comment at the appropriate time.

UPDATE: The NFL clearly does not want to be dragged into this scandal.

He looks like most liberals- Angry all of the time and on Meds.

It's pretty sad that many people likely are only on Kluwe's side because he likes to use a middle school boy's vulgar taunts against legislators with whom he disagrees.

Released for his performance, he was one of the best punters in the league

I want to claim discrimination and get attention and money! All you need to do is be vocal about something controversial and then claim someone did something you don't like and say it's because of your views, interesting!

OMG. You're just giving Kluwe what he wants....... MORE ATTENTION.

The Vikings release players based off of performance...?

It will be interesting to see if any other Vikings players chime in on this on behalf of Kluwe or the Vikings. I am guessing if this is true that other players will keep their comments to themselves in fear of being let go as well. It will be interesting to see where this goes from here.

"To be popular"?? Really? I looked at his Facebook page. His last update was July of 2013. All of the charges of him being "attention seeking" seem rather false...and he waited until the Vikings season was over to publish this letter.

It's interesting how they sweep the charges of promoting dog fighting, wife-assaulting, drunk driving, etc, etc, ad nausuem, under the rug. But what Kluwe was doing was "distracting"? Yeah, right.

Its not the organizations fault that one of their dumbass linebackers got is 2 dui in six weeks..People also have to know that the vikings gave kluwe and his family millions of dollars to punt a football...millions.... To bad kluwe isnt thankful for that....

Well, sinners do hate it when you expose their abominable sin, that's declared absolutely and authoritatively by God! Sorry, too bad!

Great, I now hate the Vikings even more than I already did. It's a pity they didn't move.

Once again the Vikings organization is in the news for the wrong reasons. When will this team wake up? First the party boat, then numerous DWI's, now this. I'm siding with Kluwe on this one.

Jeremy Norton

Their indignation might be half-believable had they not spent half of last season publicly chastising Kluwe for his off-field 'distractions.'

would he still be part of the squad if he rented a boat and hired a bunch of female sex workers instead?

"Chris was released strictly based on his football performance." With a comment like that, you'd think the whole team would have been fired long ago. 'Cept Adrian Peterson. By the way, I haven't watched a football game since I was nine years old. That was in the 80's. Early 80's.

I am certain that the NFL will do everything it can to keep its nonprofit status, as local communities continue to be taxed for the NFL building new stadiums.

Kluwe averages 44.4 yds/punt for $1,600,000 a year and is past his prime.

Locke averages 44.2 yds/punt for $405,000 a year and is a rookie who is yet to hit his ceiling.

What team would want Kluwe when they can have Locke instead?

Can this team just move to CA or TX or wherever already? Please?

Their statement is a joke just like their season and "coaching staff". He was told to compromise his ability.

He had a couple years as a top punter in the NFL. Then his performance slipped. He was cut like any washed up veteran.

He was distracting but that's not what he was fired for.   He would have been let go either way based on the pay scale for equivalent talent.    Now,  his extreme  position on his controversial cause and rude unprofessional behavior  (see profane laced letter to politician) are keeping him from kicking in the NFL, that is obvious.

The bible, presumably the "word of god," also provides guidelines on how to care for your slaves.  (absolutely and authoritatively, no less.)  What's your take on that?

@mccar588 Vikings with Kluwe were 10-6.   With Locke they were 5-10-1.   Maybe Kluwe's smart brave political stances inspired the Vikings while boring suckup Jeff Locke made the team play like a bunch of idiots.    Stats only tell a little bit of the story in football.   Kluwe got cut and the team went in the toilet.  Maybe if the coaches weren't so worried about what the Punter was saying on twitter they would have done a better job.  No matter how good Kluwe is it doesn't change the fact if Priefer said these things he should be fired.

@MicheleBachmann@mccar588   @MicheleBachmann@mccar588  Ah, as you said 'If".  But here you are again MicheleBachmann, denying the facts because of your bigoted ideology against those who don't share your sick lefty progressive views.   It's Math, i know it's really really hard for you.  Your and the electorates inability to understand basic business math is why this Democrat/Governmentcrat leadership has caused such high unemployment.   Now go watch an abortion to make yourself feel better.
