Block E rechristened as Mayo Clinic Square

Mayo Clinic
This is the Mayo Clinic's vision for the property formerly known as Block E.
Block E is officially no more. At a news conference today, Minneapolis's saddest property was officially renamed Mayo Clinic Square.

The name isn't the only thing that's changing. As we told you about a few months back, it's about to be redeveloped into a Timberwolves and Lynx practice facility. Today, the Mayo Clinic announced its partnership in the project, which will also feature a Mayo sports medicine clinic. (There will also be some street- and skyway-level commercial space.)

"With Mayo Clinic's sports medicine center located within our training facility, our players will have access to cutting edge medical technology within the most respected and recognized medical system in the world," Timberwolves and Lynx CEO Rob Moor said in a statement. "It will be a state of the art training center that will allow us to develop our players to their maximum potential, giving us a competitive edge on the court and in recruiting and retaining top talent in Minnesota."

"Most NBA teams build their practice facilities in non-descript office parks, but we are putting our new training center in the heart of a thriving downtown, providing incredible access to our fans," Moor continued.

No public money will be involved in the roughly $50 million redevelopment, which will take place at about the same time as the adjacent Target Center is undergoing a $100 million renovation of its own. Officials say they hope work on Mayo Clinic Square will be complete by the end of next year.

Just before the press conference, Kevin Love took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm for Mayo Clinic Square: A sign he plans to stay in Minnesota for the long haul? Timberwolves fans can only hope.

before Block E was Block E people went there and had fun. Planned "fun" by a city doesn't work.

Hopefully they will eliminate the bus stops around the building and force the bus trash over to Nicollet Mall.

Looking at that 'vision' for Block E...  You mean they're going to replace that crappy exterior?   So it looks like a normal building?   How 'bout that all glass skyway?

What about loitering control at the bus stops for the crowds of youths that don't ride? I am pleased to see development but know that the problem of why people didn't go to block e still exists

I like this. Apparently a lot of cynical people would rather see another failed venture with public $ wasted. If I read correctly, this will be a clinic for anyone who chooses to attend, as well as providing additional retail spaces, (albeit minimal.).

I'm guessing they chose Mayo Clinic Square for the building because "Big Box of Failure" has already been reserved for the new Vikings stadium?

it was Black E for awhile there -- they'd hang out and sell drugs, accost people, loiter and be a nuisance to people who were there to patronize the businesses.

Another action taken by elected officials which has no actual effect on someone's life, but somehow that action makes the elected official feel important.

Completely agree Matthew Martin ! The place has been a sad ghost town for years!

... Moby Dick's hasn't been downtown since 1988. Let it go people. Let it go. And yes, at least something is moving into Block E that hasn't been a previous failure.

Nice of Mayo to build clinic right by the Target center with all the broken ankles the Timberwolves suffer throughout a season.

I love how everyone keeps asking about what they're gonna do with Kierans... when the Kierans banner is clearly visible in the drawing

I miss the Fantasy Gifts there, yes we moved back down the block, but being next to Moby's and all the rest was great for our first store. I can still see my Dad in the store. I miss him.

Stop spending time on this website, and instead go volunteer at a homeless shelter. Priorities, Jason.

@digitalstatic What picture are you looking at? The view in the drawing is right where Kiernan's is now - what health clinic wouldn't want an attached Irish bar?

I too have fond memories of watching my dad purchase sex toys.
