Crane Lake resident Rob Scott recently caught the above lake trout on Lac La Croix, a lake straddling the border between Minnesota and Ontario.

Scott told the Duluth News Tribune that the fish, caught on the Canadian side, unofficially weighed in at 52 pounds, three ounces. That'd easily be a world record, according to Emmett Brown, executive director of the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wisconsin.

But in record for the record to become official, Scott must take the monster fish, which he kept, to a place where a certified weighing can be performed.

"You would have to take it to a post office, or a grocery store that has a meat counter, or some state agencies have weights and measures," Brown told us, adding that the current world record for a trout caught through ice is about 40 pounds, and that most trout roughly that size are caught in Canada's Northwest Territories.

"It's a big lake trout, no doubt about it, but how big?" he continued. "I guess we'll find out in time."

@atrupar I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to use the word "monstrous" in writing. Lucky you.
