New Vikings stadium: Latest renderings show baseball, basketball, soccer configurations [IMAGES]

Though we have our doubts about the Gophers being able to pack the house, this is ideally what the new stadium will look like for baseball.
We're all in the habit of calling it the new Vikings stadium, so it's easy to forget that the place will host more than just football.

The latest renderings released by HKS architects show what the place will look like when configured for baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey, and even motorsports events.

Like the Metrodome, the new Vikings stadium will feature retractable seats that can be rolled up for baseball, Michele Kelm-Helgen, chair of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, told us.

"The way we've designed the stadium, we'll have 54 rows of retractable seating on the right-field side of the stadium," Kelm-Helgen said. "It'll be a multi-purpose facility."

Kelm-Helgen and her colleagues are trying to woo the NCAA to bring the basketball Final Four to the new stadium once it opens in 2016, and firm plans are already in place for the U of M baseball team to play its spring schedule there.

"In the spring, over 500 baseball games have been played in the Metrodome and the same will be true in the new stadium," she said.

As for soccer, Kelm-Helgen said "there's discussions going on with the MLS about getting an MLS franchise here but nothing that's finalized."

Without further ado, here's the rest of the renderings:

That baseball alignment has the batter looking straight into the sun during late evening games.  Hope those big glass windows are tinted.

Basketball players? I thought they were ants.

I thought the retractable seats were a main reason to dump the dome. They wanted a football stadium, not a football/baseball stadium.

@citypages it shows a soccer pitch that could never accommodate real soccer. Unless corner kicks & throw ins are eliminated.

There aren't that many soccer fans in the state

Yep, and why would baseball even be played there with Target field being a venue?

@freealonzo1

@kruzer_jlr  Not going to happen with Wilfs/Vikings. Aside from the stadium being a terrible fit for soccer, their interest in it is mostly a distraction from funding issues. My speculation is current team Minnesota United FC will build a stadium in Farmers Market with their own funding (possibly in partnership with Pohlads) and jump to MLS in 5-6 years.

Huh?  Soccer is actually pretty big in the state of Minnesota, especially within the Twin Cities metro area.  Fun fact - there are more boys and girls participating in high school soccer than there are in hockey.

As an outsider, the whole stadium/ballpark/arena situation in the Twin Cities just seems so absurd.

1) The Metrodome sucked for baseball. Beyond sucked. So the Twins jumped ship into their own park with no roof, not even a retractable roof. (In Minnesota?)

2) Even though the dimensions are exactly the same, for some reason the Gophers didn't want to keep sharing the Metrodome with the Vikings. So they build THEIR own purely outdoor football field. (Again, in Minnesota?)

3) Even though the Timberwolves have Target Center, which is perfectly capable of hosting hockey, when the Wild came, they had to have their own arena (Xcel Energy Center). They couldn't just modernize Target Center to bring it up to snuff...but apparently now Target Center will undergo extensive renovations.

4) Once the Vikings finally got their deal to build a whole new stadium, the Gophers still had to play baseball games there, so they had to make it multipurpose since Target Field is outdoors. *smh*

5) The Vikings are temporarily playing at TCF Bank Stadium while their new venue is under construction...after retrofitting it with heating elements under the field for winter games.

6) The new Vikings Stadium can host ALL of these sports. Add a little bit more cost, and they could have added a retractable roof so that games could be played outdoors in nice weather. It might have had some similar problems to the Metrodome for baseball, but with a little creativity, they could have bridged the gap.

Duh. Dome was a football stadium that baseball could be played in.

And better yet, met stadium was the opposite!

@CF_MN @kruzer_jlr MLS is going to an August-May schedule, Minnesota won't get a team with a purely outdoor stadium.  Needs a retractable roof, which prices out the current MUFC plans.

@kyl3wyld Winter Tournament.  Geez people think they are so smart with these snarky comments.

@AGuy @CF_MN @kruzer_jlr  Hahahahahahaha. You mean retractable roofs like at BMO Field (Toronto) or Saputo Stadium (Montreal)? Or maybe like the ones at Columbus Crew Stadium (Columbus)/Toyota Park (Chicago)/Dick's Sporting Goods Part (Denver)?

Puh-f'ing-lease.

(for those who don't know, none of those stadiums have roof options)
