North Mpls fire claims lives of five children

Categories: Tragedy
An early morning fire that broke out in a multi-unit home near the corner of 28th Avenue North and Colfax Avenue North claimed the lives of five young children.

Reports indicate that a number of other people are hospitalized.

Fifteen people were living in the three-story home.

Crews were called to the scene about 5 a.m. on a report of a fire. The blaze was under control about two hours later. The cause of the fire isn't clear at this time.

Initial reports indicated three children died, but the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office subsequently reported that five died.

One news source says three, one says four, and another says five. In a few hours it'll probably be up to 10? Either way it's horrible.

and maybe that many were living there or maybe they had relatives spending the night...either way - 5 children have died - too tragic!

This is so horrible. I don't understand why so many deaths and so many hospitalized. They should have been able to get out. Something's not right, like the house not meeting fire code or something. I feel this could have been prevented.

It was a multiplex, not all 15 lived in one unit. However, as a Northsider I agree with your landlord statement. Who knows if they even had smoke dectors. Too many slumlords in our area.

This is very awful however, there really shouldn't be 15 people living in one household and when it comes to the north side, the landlords are the ones who should be taking care of a situation like this, but they are just money hungry assholes!

Today is one of the worst news days ever.

The property recently passed an inspection, including smoke detectors. The fire started with a space heater.

@TruDat  Bertlson is a slumlord. Lived next to one of his properties in S. MPLS. Cops there every week, always packed, and in disrepair. Hope these kids didn't die in vain.

@sigma47 @TruDat He probably takes section 8 money, not the best tenants but a guaranteed pay check every month. Someone has to provide housing for the deadbeats, that doesn't make them "slumlords." If you don't like it, quit voting for Democrats!
