:::: UPDATE :::: Couple shot to death by officers in Eden Prairie wouldn't drop a knife, officials say

Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol identified the two people shot to death Friday on Highway 212 as a man and a woman. But he refused to confirm whether this was a hostage situation, as was initially reported over the police scanner.

Four unnamed officers -- one state trooper, one Carver County sheriff's deputy, and two from the Chaska Police Department -- have been put on standard administrative leave while the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates. It could be days before they're interviewed about the moments that led up to the shooting.

The first calls came in around 7:30 a.m. about a red Saab that had been speeding and fled a rear-end accident near Highway 212 and County Road 43, Roeske said.

The names of the driver and passenger will be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office after the autopsies.

To the frustration of reporters, Roeske concluded a 16-minute press conference at Eden Prairie City Hall without providing any information about the relationship of the man and woman who were shot to death. Roeske responded to nearly every question by saying the incident remained under investigation.

"It would be premature and irresponsible to try to articulate what [the officers] saw and encountered," he said.

Before the officers left the room, a male reporter in the back asked whether the citizens of Eden Prairie should be concerned for their safety.

"That's not a question we have anyone here to answer," said Bruce Gordon, a spokesman for the BCA. "Thank you, though."

The reporter shot back: "Room full of cops. I figured they'd have an answer."

Two people were shot and killed after a police chase Friday morning on Highway 212, according to a spokesman for the Minnesota State Patrol:

The details are still emerging, but police are reporting that no officers were injured in the process. They won't confirm, as an early report over the police scanner suggested, whether there was a hostage involved.

MnDOT traffic cameras show that the car was driving with its hood up when it spun out of control and crashed between Minnesota 101 and Dell Road, shortly before 8 a.m.

The driver and passenger were killed after the pursuit had ended, according to KARE 11, whose helicopter captured images of a pair of bodies on the side of the road draped in yellow tarp.

For the moment, Highway 212 in Eden Prairie is closed in both directions.

We'll update this story as it progresses. Watch the press briefing here.

The bigger story here is that highway 212 was closed for hours. This needs to be investigated, since drivers were inconvenienced!  (it's a joke, liberals)

What happened to tazers? A person with a knife verses four officers? How about a k-9 unit being called? I fear the police more every day, we're a long way from "to protect and serve".

Lets go back to 2009 in le sueur county in mn when Tyler Heilman was shot and killed in his swimming trunks. Cops jump to the gun to fast

Cops are very often over zelious liers that look for any reason to escalate the situation and then throw there weight around.  I am confident they had no intent to make sure they could take this bad guy alive.  He diserved what they have him. .. They are just looking for the excuse to take him out... even at the expense of the women hostage!   Cops are all above the law.  Many of them bully's with a badge.   Tell your kids not to trust the police!  The most likely way your going to get shot or assulted is by a police officer.

well of course there is still a danger to the people of eden prairie, the cops are still out there armed and dangerous.

To everyone saying Police are out here to protect you that is incorrect. On the contrary the supreme court has ruled on multiple occassions that the police have no obligation to protect any individual their duty is to enforce the laws. Anyone so blind to believe all cops are good people are just ignorant. Police brutality happens and so does over use of force along with other criminal activities they just never get punished. Don't believe me look at the murders of Oscar Grant in Oakland or Sean Bell in NYC. Not to mention have we all forgotten the actions of our own Metro Gang Strike Force not even a few years ago. Quit believing what they tell you open your eyes and learn for yourself.

We don't know if there was a hostage or not

Seems suspicious. Why are they so tight lipped about the facts?

Right on MNjoe they are being very tight lipped about this shooting. I just have one question. Did the suspect have a weapon. According to calmdown the suspect displayed a knife and was threating to harm the female hostage with it. How could that one question affect their investigation? It would resolve the doubters and remove the speculation from the incident. (Q). Did the suspect have a weapon. (A). Yes. It seems as though they bring on some of these negative responses and speculation from the general public themselves. No matter how you look at it a very sad and unfortunate incident for ALL parties that were involved. Thoughts and prayers go out to all families of those involved.

Law enforcement has the right/duty to react to deadly force situations with deadly force.  The male suspect had already demonstrated a disregard for others with his driving behavior.  He apparently displayed a knife and took the female hostage - more evidence of intent to harm with deadly force.  What happened in the next several seconds WILL be investigated and reported to the public.  Perhaps, the male started using the knife?? There are squad video cameras capturing all of this.  Statements have been taken from those on scene.  The BCA will investigate this fully.  You all will hear what happened.  nearly all of you will never be put in the incredibly tense situations similar to these officers, whom most of I know.  They will forever be changed by this.  Please allow the findings of the incident to be published before speculating.

Cops have training they have to go through to make decisions in LIFE-THREATENING situations. Unfortunatley, Hollywood and other stories have made you think they're "stupid". talk to Ken Plummer of the Rochester Police about his job.

Joseph Tieman

Death, even to the "guilty" is MOST unfortunate.

Joseph Tieman

I appreciate that you want to know the truth of this situation, Dustin. That is HUGE. :)

Joseph Tieman
Joseph Tieman

Do you have some sort of idea that this should be "equal" for some reason? Cops have to deal with YOU being critical of them, they also have to deal with human nature, statistics, probability, and, the UNKNOWN in situations where people are also nearby who simply live where there is a situation going down. They have more factors to deal with, and if you're like me, that's a lot of stuff to process while making split second decisions.

Dustin Roadway

It pertains to my earlier statement that more civilians are killed by cops while fewer cops are being killed by civilians in the line of duty.

Joseph Tieman
Joseph Tieman

So, you will take a national statistic and compare it to a single incident to tell me that "they're all the same"? What is your point in saying it is a "national statistic"? Worthy of discussion, Dustin.

It's not stereotyping when it's an opinion based on past experiences.

Nothing like 20-20 hindsight. You want to have this job? Empathy would help us all a lot. If you're in trouble, they're the people you will call, if you are in trouble because of something YOU did, you think they're trigger-happy.

Joseph Tieman

So, the LA Times is a Minneapolis newspaper, huh? Since when? Things are different everywhere, believe me, for example, it's so different here in Asheville compared to Rochester.

Joseph Tieman

Dustin, go to Kwik Trip and talk to my friend Mark Devine about ride-alongs he did with his nephew. Talk to him about what it's like to be a cop. Better yet, go on a ride-along sometime with someone in the Twin Cities. Make informed decisions, these men have a hard job.

Joseph Tieman
Joseph Tieman

Please folks, when you work in law enforcement, the officers are protecting YOU, and they have no choice but to expect the worst when someone resists arrest or runs. If someone is guilty of something, they will RUN from the police, but if they are innocent, they will not.

Dustin Roadway
Dustin Roadway

Meanwhile fewer and fewer cops are killed in the line of duty yet more and more citizens are being killed by police.

Joseph Tieman
Joseph Tieman

Lots of rush to judgement here. Please, any of you complaining, PLEASE take some time to go on a ride-along with a police officer. They are dealing with the WORST of society on a regular basis. If you don't want to do this, you don't want to know how hard their job is.

they shot  cuz the police were cowards and to dumb to think of a nonviolent way . I expect better  when state troopers are involved .  id rather see  corrupt cops laying on the side of the road

man and a woman died....seems their apprehension could have been handled differently, without fatality....yes , the driver was crazy and endangered many of us....I get it.....BUT the 2 did become the hostages of the police/highway patrol , yet the need to shoot is dubious ..... what ?

@calmdown I hope they are changed.  THey shouldn't shoot numerouls bullets at someone with a knife and a hostage!

On the contrary they have no obligation to protect any individual citizen there only obligation is to enforce the laws. This is a well known fact and if you don't believe me look it up.

calmdown

correct Erik.  People in general are way too quick to judge the actions of others.  Those people have absolutely no clue what it's like to be in a situation such as this.  Events are happening in split seconds.  Law enforcement has the right/duty to use deadly force when another is using it against them or another.  I believe the male suspect had a weapon -possibly a knife - and was showing intent to use it, or he possibly had used it, which can lead to a deadly force response.  why the "hostage" was shot has yet to be explained.  This info will come out in time.  be patient people.  These are humans reacting to circumstances which most all of you will never encounter.

Split second decision?   THe guy wasn't going to be able to hurt the police he didn't have a gun and they out numbered him.

And if the passenger was an innocent hostage? Cops are being really fucking tight-lipped on this one. Were either of them armed? The details will start leaking out.

Really Joe, I have ridden with and even assisted law enforcement at times in my life. I have seen what a badge can do to SOME people. Whether it be aggressive behavior or driving like you are on a race track. Had a friend of mine beheaded (when rearended in his pickup) by State Trooper racing so as not to be last for coffee and have to buy.

I personally have summoned the Sheriff Dept. twice in the last couple years and when they showed up it was me who was treated as the criminal.

ole11

Really Joe, I Have ridden with law enforcement and found they love to exert authority and use their badge to be highway racecar drivers. Also, I have personally summoned the Sheriff dept for help in two different circumstances and it was I who was treated unjustly as the bad guy. Want proof...just ask.

@calmdown The cops are the first ones to jump to conclusions.  I've ssen over zelious cops over react and escalate situations numerous times.  The guy the were chasing was a bad guy... that's all the exuse they need to find a reason to shoot him.  I am confident they could have positioned them selves to take this guy and his hostage alive.  The second one of the shot they all started shooting.  Hey why not?  Get a day off!

Cops wouldnt have it so hard if theyed stop killing unarmed people and just use common sense once in awhile. The laws work for the rich not us poor people.Think about it? Fucking tax collectors.Hell lets shoot some more inocent people.Jails full. Cops are military trained and are illegal under the US Contitution.I say start over and fire all cops.Hire some thugs.Atleast the have some Brains and Common sense.

@dloegering @calmdownYou are confident but also ignorant.   You don't know what the circumstances were.  Don't let your emotions get in the way of reasoning, which you clearly are.   That said yes Police can over react just   like anyone in any occupation can.   Most occupational situations are not as dangerous as theirs.   But teachers also abuse kids just as much and i don't hear anyone here on their soap box about that.
