Citing Iraq war, U of M to consider resolution calling for cancelation of Condi Rice speech

:::: UPDATE :::: Anti-Condi Rice U of M professor William Messing also opposes Obama

:::: UPDATE II :::: On April 3, the University Senate rejected Messing's resolution by a 122-21 vote.

Condoleezza Rice, former national security advisor and secretary of state during the George W. Bush administration, is scheduled to give a speech on April 17 at the Northrop Auditorium as part of the Humphrey School of Public Affairs' "Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series."

But on April 3, the University of Minnesota Senate will consider a resolution that calls upon the university to cancel Rice's sold-out speech because of the role she played as national security advisor "to mislead the American people about the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and the existence of links between al Qaeda and the Iraqi regime."

"The lies thus promulgated led to the second Iraq war, which caused the death of over 100,000 men, women and children, and the displacement of millions of others," the resolution, introduced by math professor William Messing, says. "Condoleezza Rice, at the very least, condoned the Bush administration's policy of 'enhanced interrogation techniques' such as waterboarding and other torture tactics, and its attempt to present such techniques as legal."

"Whereas a 'distinguished lecturer,' especially one speaking to a theme of 'keeping faith with a legacy of justice,' should embody moral authority, therefore be it resolved that the University of Minnesota University Senate urges the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs to rescind its invitation to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Northrop Memorial Auditorium to speak on April 17, 2014," it continues.

A University of Minnesota spokesman told us he isn't aware of any precedent for the school scheduling a speech but then canceling it because of a Senate recommendation.

Rice's speaking fee is $150,000, all of which was raised privately from donor funds, a university official says.

So much hate towards an educated black woman.

Why so much hate?

If you don't want to hear what she has to say to go and don't listen.

Blocking an opposing view is shameful and terrible censorship.

Please honor diversity and honor the words of an educated black woman.

As long as you are diverse like me.

I would love to hear her speech. She's a beautiful, accomplished woman that can play piano better than me.

Condoleezza Rice, Condoleezza Rice..... Sounds like a Mexican dish to me! She was party to so much waste and destruction. I would pay nothing to give this parrot a platform..... She has that oil tanker named after her.... She has nothing new to enlighten us with....

My opinion: Ms Rice is an extremely talented, well educated, successful, professional woman who I respect for the office she held. --- For me, this is NOT a black, female, republican or democrat issue. It is the fact that she upheld and supported a deceitful dogma of the Bush administration while she held a federal office. The documentary below (and many others posted on YouTube that are produced by experienced, licensed professionals,) will further explain if you take the time to watch and do the research.

She played a vital role is deceiving the American public regarding 9/11! ~~~ Certainly hope HER SPEECH IS CANCELED! (Instead, send the money to help feed and shelter homeless individuals, instead of filling the pockets of people like this.) --- Do yourself a favor & it will not cost you anything but some time...watch this: http://youtu.be/NIOJJbIIfs4

The university would be #praiseworthy if they blocked Rice from speaking.

Hillary Clinton and most Democrats voted for the Iraq use of force declaration.

What the left does best: ban debate. Doesn't a public university in Minnesota have the duty to allow debate?

Do people not realize Democrats are Republicans and Republicans are Democrats. Those that point fingers at the other side politically are either naive, stupid, or ignorant.

Please stop voting for either side and lets finally get a reasonable 3rd option in this country. Both sides of the fight suck. And suck hard. I highly doubt most politicians vote with their brain or heart. Its about votes, fear, and power.

I want to be clear I disagree with Putin's version of events and think he is wrong, but it's still interesting to see what events he feels matter and what they mean.

Andrew Hodny
Andrew Hodny

Putin is a warmonger and his version of events shouldn't control. But it is interesting to read his perception of events. If you read Putin's statements, he was more upset by the Clinton authorized NATO bombings of Kosovo in 1999 than anything else. The Russians thought their seat on the UN Security Council meant that nothing could happen without their approval. Clinton authorized the bombings while the Russian PM was midair on the way to Washington to talk. Serbia was bombed. Kosovo held a referendum for independence based on principles of self-determination. Russia felt weak and powerless. Putin argues that if self-determination was good enough for Kosovo, it should be good enough for Crimea.

I'm absolutely not impressed by Ms. Clinton's resume. It is far too hawkish. It is hard to find an example of a US led war or conflict in the last 20 years she hasn't supported. She voted for the Iraq invasion. Her husband authorized NATO bombings in Kosovo with no UN Security Council authorization.

Would they prevent both Bill and Hillary Clinton from speaking on campus? Bill Clinton authorized US bombing missions in Kosovo despite the absence of a UN Security Council resolution. Hillary voted for the Invasion of Iraq as a Senator.

So if I disagree with your statement, it's because you're a woman and I hate white people?

Yes, intolerance toward someone who's responsible for the deaths of more Americans than all the serial killers combined. She, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be sitting in prison for war crimes.

@k2yeb Viable alternative parties will never happen until we have ranked choice voting at the federal level.  And the only way that's going to happen is with overwhelming pressure from the public.  If the politicians in office today make RCV a reality, it's going to be harder for them to keep their jobs.

We need to send them the message that it is the only way to keep their jobs.

Pass RCV = maybe lose your job

vote against RCV = definitely lose your job.

Being told I'm "wrong" by the likes of you is not the insult you think it is.

Bottom line:  UoM has the right to hold or cancel whatever events they choose, for whatever reason they choose and it has nothing to do with 'freedom of speech'

@_Joe_ "stifling a speech" is "stifled speech". You are wrong too often, make sure you have a battle before you start battling. What a pussy thing to call someone out about anyway. Lose the ego to gain intelligence.

@mingtran

Its A speech.

Not "speech"

They're different and you're usually intelligent enough to know that when it's not inconvenient to your argument.
