Lynx jerseys now say "Mayo Clinic" across chest [IMAGE]

Ads on NBA jerseys seem to be inevitable, but so far the league has resisted pressure to follow the path of European soccer.

That's not the case in the WNBA, where today the Lynx became the sixth team to emblazon its jerseys with an advertiser's logo.

The Lynx's unis will now read "Mayo Clinic" across the chest. In fact, the only thing on the front of them that's not an advertisement (other than player numbers) is the tiny Lynx logo on the shoulder.

Here's another look: For comparison, here's what they looked like before: Today's jersey unveiling comes a month after the Timberwolves and Lynx announced a partnership with Mayo that includes new practice facilities in "Mayo Clinic Square." A Mayo sports medicine clinic is also planned as part of the $50 million redevelopment of the former Block E property.

We look forward to that project being completed next year, but it's a bit unfortunate the Lynx's jerseys were converted into billboards along the way.

This sucks, worst move ever. Hate the jerseys.  , Why can't women who do a better job at play make money in the WNBA?  Crappy Losing NBA teams have sponsors lining up to suck it and  Women players still have to whore themselves out to the corporate pimp. F **k this crap. Not going to go to games and pay to see Lynx management on their knees blowing the Mayo Clinic.    My Jersey is going in the trash.

The problem is no one will purchase a jersey with ads all over them.

What's the name of the Team???? Bad choice!

It's rude of the Mayo Clinic to ask for their name to replace the team logo on the jersey. If you ask me, it's bad exposure. It's not like they needed the exposure that badly - Mayo is known all over the world.

Welcome to the future of sports Valerie. The less revenue a league makes, the more likely it is to sell ads on jerseys. Nothing is sacred.

I don't know why this is a big deal. NASCAR races are all about pasting ads all over the cars and drivers, and not only is it accepted, rubes buy hats and jackets that advertise for their favorite driver's sponsor. This is child's play by comparsion.

except for the millions of times that it did

there is literally zero precedent of sports teams bearing advertisements on their jersey. in the history of humanity. it's never happened. ever.

I will only like them if the Timberwolves jerseys are changed as well. I think that would only be fair since they both will be using the new practice facilities.

Advertising or not, the jerseys look poorly designed.

Adopt this for the Timbereolves and bring OJ Mayo here. He could have Mayo on both sides now.

I thought Mayo Clinic is a non profit organization? LOL!

Disgusted. Mayo clinic advertising should be put in the corner of the Jersey, not in the center. What a joke! I love the lynx but I hate the new jerseys.

Will they have free colonoscopy night for the first 5,000 fans?

Soccer all around the world has advertisements on their jerseys. It's a money thing, not a sex thing. The NBA is considering this too

But everyone is ok with nike on every other professional uniform.

This is where it will all go eventually... Corporate sponsored teams trailblazing around, town to town. Packed with superstars... The Pepsi Fizz vs. The Facebook Likes... Does YOUR town have an "appropriate" arena to host our wares?

The exception here (along with MLS) is NASCAR, where sponsorships are a large part of drivers' identities. Dale Earnhardt was called "The Man in Black" after Goodwrench replaced Wrangler as his sponsor, leading to the famous black #3 car. Also, Jeff Gordon and crew were once named "The Rainbow Warriors" as a reference to his Dupont paint scheme.

Well, the culture of professional sports is different in the US than it is in Europe. It's become an ingrained part of the sports culture there in the Premier League as in other football leagues (which is why it was non-controversial when MLS teams started wearing sponsors on their uniforms. Fans actually welcomed it, because it made MLS teams look more like real clubs and less like amateurish teams). What matters more is the color scheme of the uniforms staying consistent over the years (which is why it was controversial more to fans when Cardiff City changed their home colors from blue to red, regardless of what else was on the uniform). However, in the "big four" leagues here, the thought of sponsors on uniforms is an anathema to fans, which is why they have stayed away from it so far.

"rubes buy hats and jackets that advertise for their favorite driver's sponsor. That's just lovely! While I have never purchased any NASCAR stuff I do own two autographed used tires for Dale Ernhardt's #3 race car. Does that qualify me as a RUBE? Maybe.

I thought Jeff Gordon's race team was referred to as the Rainbow Warriors because a certain segment of the NASCAR fan population thought he was gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
