A conceptual rendering of the MOA expansion. An official told us more specific renderings will be unveiled at the groundbreaking ceremony.
A Mall of America official confirmed this morning that groundbreaking on a $300 million expansion project on the north side of the mall will take place before March is through.

The project will involve construction of a luxury hotel, office tower, an event area "similar to our rotunda," new retail space, and an underground parking ramp, according to Dan Jasper, MOA VP of public relations.

Asked when construction on the expansion will be complete, Jasper said August of next year.

"Our birthday is August 11, so my hope is that we'll have a big birthday party for the new opening," Jasper told us.

Jasper said MOA officials aren't yet ready to make a public announcement about major tenants, but the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports the new hotel will be a 342-room JW Mariott.

The Biz Journal also reports that the only public financing involved in the project is the $34 million in parking and infrastructure costs, which will be picked up by the city of Bloomington.

The vp must live in Colorado.I'm in construction and that deadline will make job conditions terrible, no way will that all be done by then

Yuck. So many better things to do with that money than add to an effing mall. amurica.

All the haters are fools. $34 million infrastructure covered by the city of Bloomington.  Many more times that recovered through sales and other taxes.

There's one reason why developers build them and governments help them get built. THEY MAKE MONEY. Now shut-up, all you haters and get back to your over-complaining-you-got-everything-figured-as-you-sit-on-your-ass lives.

An office tower? That close to the end of MSP runway 17/35? I think somebody better talk with the FAA and MAC first, they're not going to be on board with a building that tall right next to an active runway.

Hope the 'old' portion gets a face lift, too!

so the mall of america can put this huge addition on for 300 million, but it costs 1 billion to build a dome for the vikings. wonder who's pockets a getting lined with money.

Build another hospital. Good one. So we can over pay for medical care some more?? Talk about a scam. Build it and they will come. Don't believe it if you want but I know first hand that people from other states come here just to visit MOA.

Spend money to make money, or are you just used to mommy buying the lemonade you sold on the corner for 100% profit? A whole 34 million huh? God people bitch about everything now days. Did Bloomington make money off the MoA yet? Has Bloomington benefited from the MoA yet? Don't wait for the answer it is yes! So sick of people always going to the hospital or school card when taxes are spent on anything else, as if that's all that is entitled.

This expansion is ugly. There are better architectural firms out there that would do it justice.

When is someone going to build low income - under 500.00 monthly rental units for people in the state? This luxury schmuxury stuff stinks all the time.

America's ignorance and the size of MOA seem to parallel each other.

We better finally be getting the parking lot of America to match the expansion.

Very, very rarely shop there, but it's been good for the state economy.

@solutionspm While "someone" is making money...it certainly isn't my pocket that it's going into.  I am sure I'll be called upon as a tax payer however to help pick up the tab.

It's almost as if the land in Bloomington is way cheaper than a prime spot in downtown Minneapolis...

Not just the same...but the same store on every floor.  It's redundant.

Why would the Mall pay for a hospital or a school? And since when did Bloomington need another hospital or school? Did you even think about this comment before it fell out of your brain?

@jen.naumann  Yes, by building more parking lots we're going to lose parking. You're a math genius.
