Vikings stadium construction already underway [PHOTOS]

The final sad bits of the Metrodome came crashing down over the weekend. Concrete is still strewn on the site, but the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority tells us workers will soon crush it up and haul it away.

After that, the Dome will be nothing more than a figment of Minnnesotans' memories. Below ground, however, demolition and excavation works continues along with construction of the new stadium, which is already proceeding at a rapid pace.

The MSFA says 15 percent of the new stadium's drilled piers have been installed, and three percent of its total concrete is poured.

Not that you can tell from afar: "Demolition of the Metrodome will be substantially complete by the end of April and excavation and foundation work for the new stadium continues," MSFA Chair Michele Kelm-Helgen said in a statement. "We're also pleased that our demolition plan calls for more than 80 percent of the material that is being hauled away to be recycled for renewed use elsewhere."

MSFA spokesperson Jenn Hathaway told us more than a dozen columns that will hold up the new stadium's concourses have already been constructed.

But for now, there's not much to look at where the Metrodome once stood, which is itself a sight to see. Over the weekend a few folks shared before and after photos of the last moments of the final standing Dome concourse. Click to page two to check them out.

Such a waste of money to destroy the Humphrey Dome and build a new outrageously expensive stadium so grown up men can throw a ball around and pile on top of each other like little kids.

Glad I got to see it and be a part of it. I saw Walter Payton play in the dome.

Here in 'Murica... we support welfare for millionaires but single parents can suck it! This makes me want to do a touchdown dance on the crooked, weakened spines of poor kids!!!

We can build multi-million dollar stadiums that zip through congress but making sure each kid in school gets a healthy meal is beyond our compass. makes perfect sense.

The Gubmint takes care of single parents pretty well!   Remember "The Life of Julia" on Preezy Obamas website during the '12 elections, and how it was portrayed that Republicans wanted to take all of your subsidized stuff?    Don't worry, now Democrats are making sure you are in a hijab by proclaiming Feb 28th "Hijab" day.   Scroll to the very end to see the photo's of your fellow democrats in hijab:

And there is genocide in African countries, so who cares about poor kids in 'Murica, let's go help them instead.

You don't even live in Minnesota, let alone Hennepin County dude. You have no business complaining about anything. Don't worry, maybe some day you'll find something to do in Vermont.

I'm gonna pull out the "Taxpayer Whiner" card and say that I don't have kids, never plan on having kids, so I refuse to let my tax dollars go towards schools or school lunches.

The new stadium, however, is something I'll definitely use. So bring it on.

@ajlalk3  I'm going to pull out my "your comment is non-sensical" card and say "your comment is non-sensical".  You'll use the stadium... good for you... so will a small percentage of Minnesotans... a majority of Minnesotans have used schools... including, I'm guessing, you.
