Even Lesnar's manager couldn't believe it. (In storyline, of course.)
Last night, Brock Lesnar came out on the winning end of one of the most shocking results in pro wrestling history.

The University of Minnesota amateur wrestling legend and onetime Vikings hopeful ended the Undertaker's vaunted 21 match Wrestlemania undefeated streak by pinning 'Taker 1-2-3, clean as a whistle in the center of the ring.

Since Lesnar only works for World Wrestling Entertainment part-time and wasn't built up as an especially dangerous threat to Undertaker's steak, few if any close observers of the business thought Lesnar, 36, would "go over" (or be booked to defeat) the 49-year-old legend.

Shock was certainly evident on the faces of wrestling fans who were at the New Orleans Superdome for the big event. Here's video of the stunning finish and spectators' immediate reactions:

And here's a cool GIF capturing the can't-believe-it expression on the face of Lesnar's manager, former American Wrestling Association personality Paul Heyman, along with similar reactions from a number of fans:

This GIF also captures the post-match mood quite nicely:

Finally: The end of Undertaker's streak is a huge talker today even among people who barely watch wrestling, so in that sense WWE's shocking booking decision might qualify as a success. But some insiders, including former WWE superstar Sean Waltman (we interviewed Waltman for this week's pro wrestling cover feature), don't think Lesnar was the right man to snap the streak.

It wouldn't be weird to me to watch a TV show about a fictional high school football team going for an undefeated championship season. Yet the fact that people show up and root for, or against, a wrestler and embrace an undefeated streak in scripted entertainment -- to the point of shock when it ends -- strikes me as hilarious.

Grown men all oiled up, wearing tights, and embracing each other tightly.....It's a City Page writer's wet dream.

How much do you suppose those "fans" get paid to put on the shock face?

Wrestling is not "real".

Okay, now that we've gotten that out of the way, I'd like to explain why this truly is a tragedy to WWE fans:

The Undertaker is a man who has devoted much of his adult life to the wrestling industry. He's a man who has, time and again, sacrificed his own personal well-being to bring a smile to the faces of millions through a form of entertainment.

Brock Lesnar is pro wrestling's version of a carpet-bagger. He shows up to collect a paycheck and has no reverence for the traditions of pro wrestling, the history of pro wrestling or the artform of pro wrestling (yes, it's akin more to an artform like ballet blended with aerial acrobatics, tumbling and physical comedy- and some [usually] sub-par acting as well).

Having Brock Lesnar break The Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak is going to go down in history right next to The Montreal Screwjob: another instance when a greedy, out-of-touch billionaire CEO treated one of his most loyal, dependable and profitable employees as an interchangeable, expendable commodity...

Hmm, maybe wrestling is real...

And they just happened to have a giant "21-1" graphic ready that they could display on the screens, as well as camera angles that were only used for when Taker was walking back up the ramp after losing? No.

Somehow, 70,000 preteens were able to come up with the money to afford Wrestlemania tickets. Must have made that money selling lemonade or something.
