Conservative U of M Morris paper cries foul after professor asks people to throw it away

Last November, in an article meant to be satire, the Morris Northstar ran a photo of Trayvon Martin's dead face with this caption -- "Trayvon Martin, victim of racism and fascism, and what does [school administration] have to say about it? Nothing. Not a single thing."

That passage prompted Morris biology professor PZ Myers to write on his blog that the Northstar "has worn out its welcome and must go. Treat their scattered papers as hate-filled trash and dispose of it appropriately."

According to the Northstar's publisher, Jonathan Geiger, the school-funded conservative newspaper actually did begin to disappear from racks around campus just after Myers published his blog, and they haven't stopped vanishing since.

Geiger says this semester, there was "a two-week period where there were four thefts of an entire stack, and other papers were vandalized."

Those thefts alone accounted for nearly $1,000 worth of newspaper, Geiger estimates.

"They started disappearing that weekend right after [Myers] said, 'Treat the paper as trash,'" Geiger continues, adding that campus police are investigating the alleged thefts.

The beef between Myers -- who describes his blog as "Evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal" -- and the Northstar was picked up this week by Fox News in an article entitled, "Did professor advocate censorship of conservative student newspaper?"

The articles notes that the Northstar now has legal counsel from an Arizona-based conservative group called The Alliance Defending Freedom.

Geiger, a sophomore studying German and global business, says his paper, with the ADF's help, is considering a First Amendment lawsuit.

"It's a university public official saying pretty much, 'Let's trash their paper' and advocating censorship," Geiger says. "He's not saying, 'Hey everybody, look at these guys, they're assholes, they're dumb, ignore them.' That I would be fine with."

Myers doesn't sound too worried about it.

They have been learning from the Fox Faux Journalists and have learned the the art of liberal baiting.  Don't try and appease or debate with these Northstar  boys they are not trying to find a meeting they are learning to be  professional victims from the best.    Sean Vannity, Rush  Limbaugh, and Glen Beck.   I have watched them all.....for instance Sean.....he spends his show whining about evil mean liberals and then ends the show by throwing a nerf football.....like a girl.

you would think one of his own crew would teaching him how to throw like a boy.

That's right. Liberals are intolerant for pointing out intolerance! You showed them, brother conservative. Thank you from a fellow patriot. Now for you libs reading this: We reserve the right to have reactionary, retributive views towards things we find different and scary. You got that?!

The persecution complex from these religious conservatives is hilarious. They take an off hand comment about how their "paper" is trash (which it is), and turn it into some big whiney deal. Just because nobody likes the preaching by the "Morris Northstar" doesn't mean you're being victimized. Grow up.

Listen up all you Morris kiddies, put down the papers and tune into KUMM 89.7 fm instead

There's a long-running issue at Morris with right-wing students and their publications.  Over 20 years ago there was a group of right-wing students who claimed persecution at every turn.  One of those kids was the driving force behind the right-wing paper at that time (it had a different name), and was also involved in a lot of James O'Keefe-type provocative instigation antics. I don't remember what they were but they were misogynistic and racist, and clearly violations of the Student Code they had in place.  The school never did anything about it, though some of it was clearly not permissible on a public campus.

That kid took an intro-level class from a relative of mine and never showed up, so he got an F. He filed a protest, claiming he was being discriminated against because of his political beliefs. My relative was pressured by the Administration into letting the kid make up the class, which he needed for his major.  The kid never showed up the next term, either so he got another F. So the school just waived the requirement for him because they didn't want to deal with his wealthy father.  One of his cronies is now an elected politician from that area; another real piece of work, entitled as they come and dirtier than most.

It's a liberal campus in a very conservative area.  Like most liberal academics, they bend over both backwards and forwards to placate the Fox News/WWE-inspired breed of campus right-wingers, and it doesn't work because there's no satisfying these people. They think they paid their money so they deserve the grades and degrees, and that academic freedom means they can do whatever they want with no consequences. They've never enforced the rules these guys keep breaking, so they keep having these outbursts of sophomoric and offensive behavior, complete with the martyr act when anyone objects.

The school's just going to have to grow a pair and expel some douches.

I hope it's not too stereotypical of me to hope whoever did this despicable act of thievery did not take PZ completely at his word and recycled rather than trashed them.

Well by that logic, closed-minded conservatives should be perfectly okay with treating abhorrent ideas with disdain.

"You shall have tolerance towards my beliefs", says the liberal mind. Just don't expect them to do the same. Smells like fascism...

PZ Myers is a known douche.  If you recall him with his Atheism + dogma he was trying to push on everyone. Either you agree with him completely or you labeled a bigot and cast aside. ..and I am an atheist myself.

First, why is the school funding a partisan newspaper? Second, Myers' blog is his personal blog. He is speaking as a citizen, not a professor.

These papers are free, right? Out where anyone can grab them? Then what's the problem?

Also, "school-funded?" What a bunch of takers.

The fuck? If this paper wants to be taken seriously, don't claim a violation of first amendment rights and try to bring legal action against an individual for exercising their own. One can advocate something even if it is illegal without having engaged in an illicit activity. Really a dumb move on behalf of the newspaper.

I believe in the pure and utter infallibility of the free market.

The free market has spoken:

Your paper is garbage.

I thought conservatives were supposed to be the champions of the free market...?

If Faux News is up in arms about it, it must be a good thing.

Ummm...

Technically this isn't a first amendment issue.  The professor is well within his rights to say that it is a crappy newspaper.

What this is, is a theft issue.  That is, if someone is stealing newspapers, that is not a freedom of speech issue, it is simply theft.  I would imagine that if they are caught they will face jail time, and if they are a student they should face expulsion.

The only real question here is this:  If someone tells someone to steal something, and someone actually steals it, is the person who incited the theft culpable?

GeekAaron

So the students who run this paper think their First Amendment right to publish their paper outweighs the professor's First Amendment right to criticize it?

Chad Howard misses the point that freedom of speech means exactly that professors can protest racist newspapers or Condolezza "I lied about WMDs" Rice's visit.

Bill Boudewyns

So they don't have the right to protest Rice's paid visit? Precious.

Yes, that's right, sue the professor, that will certainly help the papers image...maybe even moreso than their horrible in poor taste joke that caused such a person to tell his students to treat it like garbage in the first place, good job.

So tired of self righteous professors like this and the 200 at the U protesting the Rice visit. Apparently free speech is good unless it's from the right.....

The papers are there for anyone to take. This is not a theft issue.

The paper is school-funded. The only victims here are the students at Morris.

I think this quote from Rick Santorum pretty much sums up people like you. "We will never have the media on our side, ever, in this country," Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, told the audience at the Omni Shoreham hotel. "We will never have the elite, smart people on our side."

Only "Smart" enough to deceive.   Look, your Lib Prog mediums are dying.   From Newspapers to Late Night, the audience/customers are shrinking.   So as in the article, we now have a different voice, New Media (Internet), Radio, and just plane common sense.   And you Gay uptight Lib Progs go Nuts when the choir is not singing in tune.  Look what happens when you have one publication on a Lib campus that dissents!     So tolerant you progs are.

No, actually a loser is a 50 year old who still rents and rides the city bus. You know.....someone like you. LOL!! I bet you get all the hot chicks banging at the door of your $400 studio! LOLOLOL!

I also love how jealous you are of CEO's who earn more money in one hour than you earn all year. LOL! Why are you envious of them? It's not their fault that they are so much smarter than you. When does your EBT card get loaded? You're welcome in advance. Loser.

@kurt124  As I said, we are tolerant of everyone except sick-fucks like yourself. Is there any part of that you don't understand? The progressive outlook brought us affordable healthcare for the masses - esp. those who haven't had it before, equal rights for GLBT folks, a better wage for hard working people getting screwed by the McDonald's and Walmarts of the world. Why is that "sick" to you? Do you hate and fear your fellow man that much?

P.S. If it was you on that table getting aborted (never too late) - I'd buy a front row ticket. Hahahaha! Loser!
