Taylor (center) vows to keep his politics out of the Strib newsroom.
Not only is the Star Tribune Minnesota's largest newspaper, but it also prints the state's number-two fish wrap. In other words, it has a lot of sway.

So the news that former Republican legislator Glen Taylor is buying the usually left-leaning Strib has some wondering aloud whether that means the paper will be moving to the right.

For instance: Taylor built a reputation as a moderate Republican during his time in the legislature from 1981 to 1990, but he's been linked to more extreme elements in the party. For instance, four years ago, he shelled out $10,000 for a photo op with Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin.

However, during an interview with WCCO yesterday, the owner of the Timberwolves and Lynx said he won't let his politics impact the tone of the Strib's coverage.

"I think that people that worked with me over at the legislature will know that I am a person who can take in many different viewpoints," he said.

Taylor won't comment on what he's paying for the Strib, but a media journalist who spoke to the New York Post estimates the Strib's sale price was about $100 million, and that the paper made about $30 million in profits last year.

But Taylor admits that buying the Strib isn't all about money. Asked by Fox 9's Tom Lyden whether the decision to purchase his home state's largest newspaper is about business or altruism, Taylor said, "If I had to put a number on it, I'd say, 50-50."

We called Taylor's office last week seeking comment on rumors he was interested in buying the Strib, but he never got back to us. As you'd expect, the Strib itself broke the news of the purchase agreement.
