Mary Franson characterizes anti-bullying bill as "fascism," GLBT community as "special interest" [VIDEO]

It's one thing to oppose a bill with well-reasoned arguments, another to portray it as potentially destroying Minnesota as we know it.
Two years ago, Rep. Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, was a regular fixture here on Blotter. To cite just a handful of reasons why, recall that she compared food stamp recipients to wild animals, called Earth Day a "pagan holiday," characterized a House floor prayer commemorating the anniversary of the Gulf oil spill as "offensive," and took out a steamy restraining order against her then-boyfriend (chair of the McLeod County GOP).

Franson seemed to be vying to become the next Michele Bachmann, but all the controversy and publicity didn't do her political career any good. Though she represents a solidly red district, she won reelection in 2012 by the thinnest of margins while her party went from being the majority to the minority in both the House and Senate. Perhaps in response, she's really toned it down since. (Although she still managed to take a pot shot at yours truly along the way.)

But yesterday, the Franson we enjoyed during those halcyon days of MNGOP control of the legislature was back on display during the House's interminable debate about the Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act, which she characterized as an "attack on the Bible and conservative Christians."

For Franson, however, the bill is about more than that. It's also about the F-word -- fascism.

"First, I'm just going to start off by saying, fascism -- a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government," Franson said. "To bring it closer to this bill, we could say fascism, Minnesota style, is a way of organizing school children in which a school district is ruled by special interest groups such as the LGBT groups and Minnesota Democrats in which school children and parents are not allowed to disagree with the special interests."

Here's video of Franson's testimony:

Concerns about fascism and 1984 aside, the bill ended up passing mostly along party lines after nearly 12 hours of debate. Since it's already been approved by the Senate, it now heads to Gov. Mark Dayton for his signature. Dayton plans to sign it today.

Never saw a more classic example of narcissistic behavior.  Her entire term has been bullying and fascism.....   Narcissists project guilt, blame, and responsibility onto others, pass the buck, and hold themselves immune to the consequences of their very own actions.

In her video, Franson spends a lot of time patting herself on the back for how kind she is, and how she doesn't support bullying.

Except that she is anything but kind in her reference to food assistance for poor people; comparing them to animals is NOT treating them with dignity, respect, kindness, consideration, much less anything resembling good so-called "Christian" compassion.

Her voting record and BAD words far outweigh her claims - for which we only have her own words - about her supposed niceness in opposition to bullying.  I don't believe her.

As to the people, like the CEO of Mozilla, apparently the Republicans ONLY believe in consequences for actions when those consequences apply to other people.  Clearly, they don't mind if someone loses their job for BEING gay - or housing, or the ability to adopt children, or the simple dignity of fair and equal accommodation in being served by a business without someone in the business passing judgement on their personal lives, or imposing their religion.

Eich did not have the confidence of his employees, because he supported through donations, unequal treatment of same-sex oriented people.  To do the job of CEO, he had to have that support and confidence.  It was his actions, his CHOICES, not who he was born to be, that resulted in those consequences.  Sexual orientation is not a choice.

Ditto Chick-filled-hate and Duck Dynasty's pro-pedophile Robertson.  They are entitled to their religious bigotry, and to their freedom of speech; they are not entitled to consumers supporting those unpopular positions or beliefs.  Chick-filled with hare went downhill after the bigotry, so has the cable show Duck Dynasty.  Their choice, much like using the 'N' word would be a choice, or calling Hispanics wetbacks.  Discrimination is an unpopular choice that has consequences.

Stop whining when you make those choices; it's not like the consequences should come as a surprise.  Whining you're a victim of being a bigot, and incorrectly calling people fascists, are not going to improve on those consequences.

But hey, it plays well to the radical right wing base, the ONLY people about whom Franson and her MN GOP colleagues give a damn.  Everyone else is expendable to Franson and her cronies.

I love the rebulicain bs mantra of teach a man to fish retoric..a man can't fish if he doesn't have anywhere to fish and there's also a finite supply of fish from any location...if rebulicains really cared they'd before greater education for all intead of surpressing it..but then if they did that they wouldn't have a segment of society to do menial low skill labor or for the military,

Sco Kel, look up the definition of the word "marriage". Your emphasis on "holy/ spiritual" and "MAN and WOMAN" does not change the true nature of the institution. It's obvious by your highlighting of certain words that you have your own "agenda".

Anna Gonzalez

Except civil unions dont give them the same rights as a marriage and if they couldnt get married then thats not equal rights. I cant even imagine some one like you saying lgbt had equal rights even if you dont agree with their life style. You actually didnt answer my first question you just called me a fascist for asking what the "special rule" for "special people" was?

Actually, in MN the marriage laws have always been "equal". Any man could marry any woman, or choose not to. The only thing that changed was the government's definition of the word "marriage" which is (was)technically a term used to describe a holy/spiritual union between MAN and WOMAN. A civil union would better describe any other partnership/ relationship. Going back to your first comment, its obvious you have the fascist thing going for you. Don't forget that the lgbt community is about 2% of the total population and the rest of us don't care much for fascists

whats the special rule? We are suppose to be equal in the eyes of the law but humans are the ones that make the judgment. Same sex couples were just recently allowed to marry but were all equal? Obviously that not a true statement, and theres alot of laws that contradict "were all equal in the eyes of the law."

Sco Kel
Sco Kel

I'm not a republican. There should be no special rules for "special people". We are all equal in the (governments) eyes of the law. This law turns that upside down. Similar to any "hate crime" layer to an assault charge. Assault is assault, no matter the victim, no matter the crime.

No because if the schools had a GOOD bullying policy in place there wouldn't be as many recent suicides BECAUSE of bullying as there has been. In just 2011 dept of edu said MN had the weakest bullying laws in place and they have hardly changed since then. You are obviously an extreme republican and you cant reason with extremist. Shes not just sharing her opinion shes actively trying to fight this bill. No Im not tolerant of people who use religion in our government. This bill said nothing about religion yet she thinks its an attack on conservative Christians? Give me a break.

Sco Kel

she never said they were "like" zoo animals. She did say that if you feed "wild animals" they will grow dependent, and won't learn for themselves. It's true. If you give a man a fish today, he'll need a fish tomorrow. If you teach a man to fish today, he'll take care of himself tomorrow.

Sco Kel
Sco Kel

In America, citizens can believe whatever they want, and discriminate all they want. Only the governement isn't allowed to discriminate. If you give a specific class of people, let's say gay people, more rights or less rights than non-gay people, you are discriminating. You have the right to be gay. I have the right to think its wrong. You have to deal with that.

I've already posted it several times in this thread, because there are a lot of trolls in this thread that don't understand how to use words. Here is my definition: Philosophy unquestioning obedience to its cause, and subordination of the individual will to the state's authority We could have a legit debate as to whether or not this bill is fascist, but you've already sunk to a level that O

Sco Kel
Sco Kel

Hardly. Just someone who actually knows what they speak of, and cares about the state I live in, and who knows what Representative Mary Franson believes in. There are plenty of trolls in this thread, but I'm a real, god fearing american. I pull no punches. I'll try to get through with common sense, but a sheep is a sheep. Some sheople can't arrange words to make a coherent statement, so they run from the argument by immediately name calling (some would say that's "Bullying"). In the end, they remain silent, because they got no heart, or balls in your case.

History class seems to have put some to sleep here, so: ultranationalism, religious fundamentalism, savage capitalism, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, obsession in defense/military/military industrial complex, these are the tenants of this form of authoritarianism. Seems like the shoes fit one party more than others...

Sco Kel

the schools already have policies in place to deal with bullying, and they were decided on a local level by school boards (the way its supposed to work). This state is run by fascists, communists, and some progessives that call themselves democrats, so its no wonder we get legislation like this. Earth day is the same as any other day, pagan or not. It's not a real holiday. You call her a bitch, for expressing her opinion. You probably think you're tolerant, and open minded too.

Your saying a child can get bullied every day and become so depressed they have thoughts of suicide or even worse follow through with it are idiots? This bill is just gives a more clear definition of what bullying is and add emphasis that bullying for sexual orientation is a large problem. It give teachers guide lines of how to handle situations. Whats exactly wrong with that? Also slander is saying something that ruins someones reputation. This bitch said earth day was a pagen ritual. Im just making an educated guess on what she probably thinks but doesnt say out loud. If someone is ruining her rep its her not me.

" The only thing that changed was the government's definition of the word "marriage" which is (was)technically a term used to describe a holy/spiritual union between MAN and WOMAN. A civil union would better describe any other partnership/ relationship."

Wrong on all points.  First of all marriage has always been a civil contract that defined obligations and outlined property rights.  Religion was - and is - an entirely optional facet, at the discretion of the participants.  Historically, religion was not a requisite.

Further, marriage has historically also been between same sex partners, pretty much up into the 18th century, including in the Roman Catholic church, complete with separate liturgy, same-sex oriented saints, and including same-sex married martyred saints, Bacchus and Sergius, dating back to the 4th century - which is a tradition that dates to the same time as the collecting of the books of the Bible by the Christian church.

Fascism is defined by a number of characteristics; this kind of discrimination against groups of people is classic to YOUR side of the argument, not the LGBT community, or the many people who support them and share common cause with them, including the many Christian churches and congregations.

Dog Gone
Dog Gone topcommenter

Marriage between same sex partners is the same as between heterosexual partners in all of the ways that matter in the context of civil rights.  For example, same sex partners are equally good parents, own homes, etc.

SO NO, Minnesota marriage laws were not always equal.  Fortunately they are equal now.

You make a false and specious argument - but then conservatives consistently lie when the facts don't support their position, and conservatives consistently discriminate whenever they get the chance, and conservatives consistently believe things that are clearly and factually false.
