Meth lab found in nice southwest Minneapolis neighborhood

Members of the U.S. Marshals North Star Fugitive Task Force got a rude awakening when they tried to apprehend a fugitive at a house at 5137 Abbott Avenue South in the Fulton neighborhood of southwest Minneapolis last Friday morning.

When officers entered the home behind 37-year-old Jeremy Gonser, who was wanted for two felony counts of drug possession and another count of gross misdemeanor theft, their eyes began to itch and burn. The scent of chemicals wafted in the air.

Minneapolis police say Gonser was operating a meth lab out of the house's basement. MPD spokesperson John Elder tells us other dangerous chemicals unrelated to the meth lab were found inside the house as well.

No officers required medical treatment.

Gonser, two other men, and two women were hauled out of the house and detained by authorities. The men and one of the women said they lived at the home and were released. Another, 27-year-old Starlet Johnson, said she was homeless, but was arrested thanks to a number of outstanding warrants.

Both Johnson and Gonser remain in custody at Hennepin County Jail as this is published.

Elder said a special team was called in by the North Star Fugitive Task Force to clean up the property, which he said doesn't pose a health or safety threat for neighbors.

Here's a Google Street View image of the house at 5137 Abbott Avenue South:

According to Hennepin County records, the house was built in 1921 and is valued at $175,000. It's owned by Sara Shenton. Records indicate she lives at the home.

Asked how often the MPD finds meth labs in Minneapolis, Elder tells us, "very seldomly."

"I can tell you that's it's really rare," he says.

Not really surprising.  Should we be surprised?

It's neighborhoods like this that get overlooked because of the population and Income bracket. A lot of drugs and other illegal activities go on. It's not all "low income" neighborhoods. The headline "Meth lab found in nice southwest Minneapolis neighborhood"  Headlines are meant to grab your attention! Southwest Neighborhood!?!? SO! Stupid is stupid and Stupid exists in ALL neighborhoods and income brackets!  So broad'n your focus.... you'll find a lot more bad guys!

That is a shame. Normally in many locales, meth houses are demolished, depending on the level of contamination within as to the residual effects of the chemicals used in manufacturing it. Maybe a minor clean up - yet thorough one - will be all that little house will need. :)

The reality is there is very little police enforcement in SW Minneapolis. It was simply a stroke of luck they found this meth lab.

What the h-ll is wrong with these people. That house is very close to a playground and a school. I live just blocks away on 42nd. You think you're in a safe area....thank God these jerks and their poison are out of here!!!!

The biggest crime in that story is the assessed property valued! The land alone is worth $250,000 now that the teardown moratorium has been lifted. Plus, there's a show dog in the area that's plus $25k to any neighborhood.

Many argue pros or cons of drug legalization, but if there is one meth lab in the world, money should not be spent pot prevention. Let's get our priorities straight people. Meth mames kids..... Let epileptic children have their olive oil medicine and deadheads have their weed and use the money to close down meth labs...You would have tons of cash to work with...

Tell me again how the people that were let go that lived in the house, had no idea that a Meth lab was in the house? If officers going into the house had reactions, I can imagine living there. Thats just sad really that they were let go. Maybe they had nothing to do with the Meth itself, but they certainly were not stopping it either. If the ones arrested were tenants, are they not responsible for that?

My Mom lived in that house for over 30 yrs. She filled it with love and sweat from years of care. We drove by not long ago and I was appalled. She did not recognize it, which was both heartbreaking and a godsend. My heart breaks.

Your mom keep that beautiful, she had such lovely gardens and the house & yard were always well kept.I pleaded with Mom not to give the house to Sara, but on her death bed she insisted .My daughters meth use has caused me so many problems.I'm sorry for all the problems she has caused .The county is on the case now and they will make sure there are no more problems there.

I'm thinking it'll be up for sale again soon. Hopefully, non-meth users will buy it this time and show it some love again.

@MicheleBachmann @MNjoe  If only we'd built that fence years ago on the MN - IA border, think how much nicer MN would be. And the real Michelle Bachmann would never have gotten in. *sigh*
