Metro Transit Route 10 bus hits pedestrian in downtown Mpls; 12 injured [PHOTOS]

-- Update: Check out photos from the crash scene at bottom --

Around 8:30 p.m. last night, a Metro Transit Route 10 bus traveling southbound on 2nd Avenue South hit a pedestrian in the intersection of 2nd and Washington Avenue.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation, but the pedestrian was transported to the hospital "conscious and breathing," Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland tells us. The pedestrian wasn't the only person injured in the crash, however -- the whiplash effect that resulted from the driver slamming the brakes injured 10 passengers who "complained of minor injuries" and were also sent to the hospital.

Since the driver also needed medical attention, that means a total of a dozen people were injured.

Siqveland says that "while the number of people injured in this incident is on the high side," whiplash injures on Metro Transit buses "are not that uncommon."

"It isn't at all infrequent for that type of thing to happen when the bus operator has to make a sudden stop and a person onboard falls or something like that," Siqveland says. "Another thing that commonly happens is buses get hit from behind at bus stops and people complain of neck and back injuries and are transported to the hospital."

The driver of the Rout 10 bus involved in last night's incident was tested for drugs and alcohol. Typically, drivers involved in crashes are placed on leave pending the results of an investigation, Siqveland says.

Since we are talking about the speed of the buses.  Obviously this bus was going faster than 25 mph.  Please note the car in the bottom right hand corner.  Notice that the back of it is smashed.  That is my husbands car.  It looks like it got rear ended. The Bus had to have been going extremely fast for that area to cause that kind of damage.  He was in work when it happened thankfully.  But the question is...are we going to be made whole.

Somebody want to explain why the bus is on the sidewalk? Apparently the bus veered off the road eh? Not one single witness statement from all the various news outlets?  Was EVERYONE taken to the hospital or why is there no detail?

I've been taking the bus for years and only one accident via icy roads. Adam, you have no idea what you're talking about.

They almost destroyed me in my car and I've seen pedestrians jump out of the way of busses. Their drivers are horrible.

Actually there was another MTC bus incident at 2nd Ave N and Washington Ave N that involved MFD and an ambulance was on the scene roughly around that same time period. I don't think a pedestrian was hit in that incident. And just for the record, the North in North Loop refers to streets with a North designation therefore 2nd Ave South is clearly not in the North Loop. This is the kind of information that is usually supplied to tourists wandering around the North Loop looking for the Guthrie Theater.

If you want to see something very funny( or sad), go down to the Bus company claims office and watch some of the tapes of these accidents and look at who making all the injury claims. We have had people jumping off seats 2-3 minutes after the accident and making claims.

Are we just calling everything North Loop now?

Those photos look like Washington Ave S and 2nd Ave S (not north).

@stephansonprop  I bet they are also the type of people who carry Obamaphones. I bet they all screamed in unison: "MUH NECK! MUH NECK HURT!"

@DavidFoureyes  I changed North Loop to downtown Mpls to clear that up. Thanks.

@DavidFoureyes  North Loop isn't precisely defined to best of my knowledge. I grant it might be a block or two further east.

@atrupar @DavidFoureyes  It at least doesnt start until you're north of Hennepin, and I still contend this is Washington and 2nd Ave South as the 10 turns right onto Hennepin to go to NE before 2nd Ave N...that and the photos.

@DavidFoureyes  Checked in with MTP and you're right. Corrected that in blog. I must've misheard on phone earlier. Thanks for your help -- you probably deserve a byline on this one!
