Former University of Minnesota research assistant Matthew Krause faces a first-degree methamphetamine manufacturing charge after police caught him cooking up a batch last Friday in the Minikahda Storage facility at 1441 Hunting Valley Road in St. Paul.

Krause, 30, could face more charges, as the U of M tells us it's investigating an allegation that Krause cooked meth on campus.

That allegation was made by Krause's friend, who called police last Friday from Minikahda Storage to report Krause was selling tools he'd stolen from him. He said he was scared to confront Krause because he was toting some sort of shotgun or long gun.

When officers arrived at the storage facility, they could smell "a strong odor of chemicals coming from inside" one of the units, Krause's criminal complaint says.

"The door suddenly opened and [Krause] emerged and appeared very surprised to see police," the complaint continues. "Officers saw a full methamphetamine lab in plain view... [they saw] liquid bubbling inside glass beakers and an exhaust fan at the back of the locker."

Krause was arrested. His friend subsequently described him as a heavy meth user who was living in a storage unit and had a habit of breaking into other units and stealing from them.

The friend said Krause "worked at the University of Minnesota or was some kind of a student there," the complaint says. But he allegedly did much more than that.

"Krause cooked methamphetamine in a lab on campus in the past and had stolen a lot of property from the university including chemicals," Krause's friend told authorities, the complaint continues. The friend "thought Krause was ordering chemicals from Russia via the internet so law enforcement would not be able to track his purchases."

Indeed, Krause's Facebook page lists him as a "Genetic Researcher" at the University of Minnesota. His profile picture, posted last December, shows him alongside some sort of scientific presentation:

U of M spokesman Chuck Tombarge says Krause was a student at the U's College of Biological Sciences, but he hasn't earned a degree or been enrolled since spring 2013. He was employed by the College of Biological Sciences as an undergraduate research assistant but his tenure ended on June 16 of last year.

The U says it has no record of Krause getting in trouble with campus police, but "as a result of the Ramsey County complaint filed against Mr. Krause, University Police are investigating claims and allegations related to University property or other alleged connections to the U," Tombarge says.
