Little Canada chiropractor Paul Thompson faces charges of first- and third-degree criminal sexual assault for allegedly raping one of his clients during a May 8 session.

A 27-year-old woman reported the incident to her fiance on May 13. She said that while she was dressed in a patient's gown and lying on a massage table, Thompson, 54, climbed on top of her and raped her. He then continued working on her back without saying a word about what just happened.

After he was informed, the woman's fiance traveled to Thompson's office at 11 Little Canada Road East to confront him. Thompson subsequently sent the alleged victim a text saying, "I am sorry for how I treated you."

Police were eventually informed about the incident. The alleged victim told officers she'd known Thompson for about 10 years, and had been seeing him twice weekly during the past three years for treatment of pain and injuries connected with a car accident.

The alleged victim agreed to participate in a phone conversation with Thompson that police secretly recorded. Here, according to the criminal complaint, are some excerpts from that call:
During that phone call [Thompson] stated, "I'm sorry all this extra stuff happened." [The victim] stated, "I need to know why you had sex with me, you know I didn't..." The defendant interrupted and stated "I know you don't and I'm sorry I did that." The defendant then stated, "So I'm truly sorry, I mean that it's wrong, totally." [The victim] asked, "So what if I get pregnant because you didn't use a condom?" She then stated, "I am hurt over this and didn't want to have sex with you." The defendant stated "I know you didn't, I know you didn't."
Thompson was arrested. During a post-Miranda interview, he confessed to forcing himself upon the woman, saying "he did not ask for her consent" before getting on top of her.

"He confessed that he has inappropriately touched her breasts three to four times during prior treatments, and that he has placed his tongue on her vagina two to three times during prior treatment sessions," the complaint says. "He reported that he has had complaints filed against him with the Minnesota Board of Chiropractors for boundary issues and inappropriate touching. He was placed on probation for four years. One of the requirements was that he had to always have someone in the office with him when he was with clients."

The alleged victim seconded Thompson's confession that he had acted inappropriately during prior sessions, but said she "did not try to stop him because she was afraid and was trying to block it out."

"She said that is how she copes with things," the complaint says. "She continued to go back to him for treatment because she was in a great deal of pain and she thought that he would stop his behavior."

Thompson faces up to 15 years in prison in connection with the third-degree criminal sexual conduct charge.

ben, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. This story has nothing to do with feminazis. Some people cope with bad things that happen by blocking them out.

Furthermore, this rapist has had prior problems reported to the board. Why didn't the board do anything serious about it? The board did have the (former) chiropractor get a mental examination. The examiner told the board that the chiropractor needed long term treatment. The board pretty much ignored that diagnosis and suspended his license for what amounts to 2 week.

candice, he is now an admitted rapist, do you still think he is "great"? One other patient has also come forward.

I have known Thompson since I was 12 he started working on my back at 14, I have been to him 6-7 times a year for adjustments and I never once felt uncomfortable around him.

He is a great chiropractor.

Sherpa and the rest of you commenters:  Seems pretty obvious to me.  One, he is clearly guilty of crossing a line that never should be crossed.  The fact he has done it more than once proves he did not heed the warnings.  Secondly, seems that the victim was not all truthful. He basically had oral sex with her more than once and she still came back. Now she claims she does not remember those incidents.  Really?  What really happened is she probably didn't mind the oral sex but he crossed the line when he had intercourse.  She then told her fiance but never realized the other oral sex incidents would come out.

Should he go to prison?  Of course.  But there is more to this story than some of the feminazi's care to admit.

I'm confused...he's had multiple occurrences of inappropriate behavior with this same patient? AND had her cell phone number? If she didn't want any of it to be happening, she didn't have to go back. Why wasn't a complaint filed with the first altercation? I'd be concerned with her mental health.  Still wrong of him for taking advantage, but either there is way more to this story than we know (like maybe she has mental illness that makes her "vulnerable") or these are completely bogus accusations...but there are some obvious holes in this story.

If she allowed him to finish the session, that's rape?

This is so sad... Its not easy when your involved to report it.. You feel awful about yourself.. I too went thru a very similar thing with a chiropractor, even tho i had voicemails, and text messages apologizing for his actions, i was to ashamed to talk to the police. Instead i blamed myself.. Unless you have been thru a situation like this dont judge how she handled this.. I wish i had stepped up and did something about it...

i'm sorry this happened to another woman. while i wasn't raped, i was touched inappropriately & he permantly disabled my shoulder. i wish i had googled him before instead of after, i would have found out that he was on probation for the 3rd time. i wish i had carried out my plans of vengeance, it would have prevented him from continuing to do this. the people i told, cops, lawyers, state board, other doctors, they did nothing. how unfair that he got to carry on his life, business as usual, while his victims' lives were completely ruined. i am still struggling to get any form of my life back. it 's been 7 yrs & the mental & excruciating physical pain i live with daily has cost me everything. all because of him. i also went back to him a 2nd time, but i did it with plans of going to knife the fucker or taze his balls. . i chickened out. i'm sorry.

I'm pretty sure this patient should have reported him when he first touched her inappropriately. Also, this guy is a creep.

It's really sad she went back, & I don't understand why, but criticizing HER actions is one if the biggest reasons we can't get away from rape culture in the first place. If someone got kidnapped and developed a kind of Stockholm Syndrome and wouldn't try to leave, you wouldn't NOT charge the kidnapper.....so how exactly us this different? Maybe we don't yet have a name for it, but we gotta stop this culture of "well I don't understand their actions so I'm gonna put blame on them" (suicide & bullying victims get it too!)...SHE'S not the one who committed the damn crime!

This type of sex crime is actually common and WIDELY underreported. Victims, such as this one, are typically far too scared and embarrassed to say anything. Offenders are also good at targeting which women are more likely to be submissive and are more likely to react like she did. Sex offenders are very good at grooming their victims. Thus, it is completely unacceptable to victim blame in these situations. I have prosecuted cases like these before, be happy she had the courage to come forward and report this guy before he raped someone else... Any other remarks just make you sound like a jerk. Honestly.

Education about this issue is very important. Victims of sexual abuse, especially by an authority figure or a "professional" often times do not believe that it actually happened. They tell themselves they must be imagining it. That this person, that they trust with their lives, would never treat them in this fashion. They think their mind is playing tricks on them. If you are in severe chronic pain, your mind can tell you many things that are false. When you are laying on a table, naked and vulnerable - many times face down and with your eyes closed - you disengage from your body. It is the only way to survive this kind of pain that never ceases.

Weird story. The chiro should not have breached patient boundaries with or without her consent, but she cannot say she conseneted to nothing at all.

Chiropractors are not massage therapists. There is a governing body for the licensing of chiropractors in the state of Minnesota and all complaints can and should be filled through them. You do not have to involve the police, though, in this case, that was completely warranted. As stated in the article, this individual had been suspended by the Minnesota board of chiropractic examiners in the past.

I'm not sure how I would react if it was me, but she didn't have to go back to that chiropractor. I'm more inclined to believe they were fooling around in other sessions and since she wasn't saying no and continued to come back for more sessions with him he was probably seeing how far she'd let him go. From the beginning tho he should have never crossed that doctor/patient line and he is still needs to be held accountable.

Jordan James

I'm not sure why she went back either, but here's the thing...no matter what takes place beforehand no person is ever entitled to another's body without consent. Whatever transpired beforehand, if in that moment he knew she didn't want it to go further and he acted anyways...that's rape. Period. And he deserves prosecution. Spouses can rape spouses, significant others can sexually assault the other...it doesn't matter what the exact nature of the relationship of two people is or what has transpired between them in the past...there is never a such thing as a free pass or the right to act with impunity. No one is entitled to our bodies, ever, no matter what, forever, always, end of story, period and exclamation point.

You have absolutely no idea in which ways certain people are or are not vulnerable. Being specifically not a vulnerable adult doesn't make someone not vulnerable.

Yeah Minnesota has absolutely no umbrella law standard for these healthcare providers. Learned that when I got my degree in massage therapy. It screws legit practitioners over too. Makes it really difficult to build establish move a business.

I hate how its very obviously pointed out that she an "alleged victim" but he doesn't have anything before his name. It would read so differently if it said alleged rapist and the victim or even alleged rapist and the alleged victim.

There's a huge difference between "blaming the victim" and being slightly curious as to why this patient/provider interaction continued after the first inappropriate behavior. Fact is, there's not enough information in this story to make a decision one way or the other. It's a horrifying situation, but it just doesn't seem that cut and dried...

I have to add that any chiropractor who has you get all the way undressed from the waist down is fucked up. How in the world does one not realize that's wrong to do ? Oh I know! Because no one educates others about what's ethical and what isn't, we even have therapeutic massage listed as a "sexually oriented " practice in this state wtf. So, in my honest opinion something isn't being told . He's not even ethical by any standards, reminds me the time I went and tried to get what I thought was a LEGITIMATE massage & chiropractic treatment and the guy groped my breasts so, I jumped up and left never went back but in Minnesota there's no where to report him here but police who either won't help unless you do the dirty work I;e record phone calls etc or You can try the health department but the forms are so tedious to fill out it's just as much torture as going through that over again. Like I said the state of Minnesota is severely lacking in regulations in this department to the point that sex offenders and prostitutes are able to treat people. SMH

Wait, she thought him touching her vagina with his tongue (multiple times) was an accident?? I'm not blaming the victim, but damn...

Sarah Lawl

"If she quit receiving treatment then she would have to explain" Lol Well...she had to explain anyways?! She couldve just went to another Dr...and not explain anything when she first felt uncomfortable. Its that simple.... Is this "victim" a vulnerable adult? If not....ALL my comments and opinions stand.

@citizen BTW, did you read the police report?  Clearly you did not or injected your own biases.  She knew him for a decade and knew his family.  Then he licks her vagina multiple times over multiple appointments and she comes back for more. Citizen, there are Chiropractors on almost every street corner.  Why go back?  I suppose she "blocked that out too"....lol

ben22j22
ben22j22

@citizen so he has oral sex with her and she "blocks it out" and comes back for the next scheduled session? Nice.  Talk about mixed signals.  Like I said, he is in the wrong but that girl is definitely really, really dumb or a poor liar.

well in this case he has admitted fault, however, I am quite sure we have men in prison because some women decides she was raped when it was consentual until the relationship went bad.  My thought is, anytime there are multiple incidents and the "victim" returns should be looked at closely.

That is exactly what I was thinking...I KIND of understand if you don't try to resist a rape, but who in their right mind doesn't find another practitioner after one, let alone MULTIPLE episodes of surprise oral sex. It's not prison - you don't HAVE to stay there.
