Mankato police arrest "man in red" who allegedly punched Kolstad before Nelson's kick [MUGSHOT]

The mugshots of Trevor Shelley (left) and Philip Nelson.
Last night, Mankato police arrested 21-year-old Trevor Shelley in connection with the Sunday morning altercation that left former Minnesota State University linebacker Isaac Kolstad in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury and former Gophers starting quarterback Philip Nelson charged with first- and third-degree assault.

Police believe Shelley was the "man in red" who decked Kolstad, knocking him out cold and causing his head to bounce off the pavement, before fleeing the scene on foot. Nelson, who says Kolstad struck him before the man in red intervened, then allegedly moved in and kicked an unconscious Kolstad in the head once or twice.

A Blue Earth County Jail official tells us Shelley is being held on suspicion of the same charges Nelson faces. Shelley hasn't yet been charged as this is written.

In other developments, Nelson was officially dismissed from the Rutgers football team this morning (he transferred to Rutgers from the U of M after last season). He was released from custody yesterday after posting $20,000 bail.

We spoke with one of Kolstad's relatives this morning. (She asked that her name not be used in this report). She said she's in the process of planning a benefit for Kolstad in Minneapolis.

The relative seconded what Nelson's criminal complaint says about the dire state of Kolstad's condition. A Mayo Clinic doctor says Kolstad has a severe head injury and a severe pulmonary injury. He may not survive his injuries, but even if he does, it's not likely he'll make a good recovery.

A perfect example of alcohol violence. Why is it legaly served and drank as if its a food ? Start by prohibiting it. Or make bar owners resposible for the results. Our society and law makers are sick by making our own problems and then create courts, prisons and fix programs funded by our tax dollars more than the pot holes on my street.

We dont know the facts yet. Who provoked who. What words or threats were made. Who was the aggressor?

But why did the guy in the coma even attack them in the first place?

He escalated it to the physical level, he shouldn't have attacked that guy from behind as he was walking away.

Everyone involved is an idiot, everyone.

This is nothing but a tragedy. The whole incident lasted 10 seconds. In 10 seconds many lives have been changed forever. These are all young 20 something kids that are just starting their lives and have now been altered forever. Everyone involved has my thoughts and prayers. I feel bad for everyone involved. It's not my job to be judge and jury.

How did Nelson get out on a 20 g bail? He's shown a decided lack of character and I wouldn't be surprised if he skipped bail. Terrible stuff!

Surprising Mankato actually found him. Not he turned himself in. I've lived in Mankato/north Mankato on and off for 20 years. They don't never find much out. SMH my families prayers go out to his family. 2 dumbass should be in jail.

Whatever happened, it was idiotic bullshit and now one young guy will either die or never work right again, and two other young men will have totally screwed-up lives.  All over something that would have been forgotten completely by noon the next day.

These are guys that are already in the media spotlight who had amazing things going for them. And it just so happens to be 2 college football players involved so of course people are going to comment on it

How long have you known one or the other of them? I assume that you do, since you pass judgement so quickly. No one is without blame for one thing or another, and while no one in this situation acted smart, do they deserve continual abuse if they are already being punished? I will be courteous to my friend, no matter where he ends up.

@oopsyd @stace13  Actually if you read articles from yesterday it explained why they were fighting. Nelson started the argument, Kolstad threw the first sucker punch. All were drunk.

@MNjoe  I wonder if there will be any prison since Kolstad threw the first punch. Will be interesting how this plays out.

@dchristen11   Pretty much the same thing as that psycho that shot the two teens.   Nelson would likely be in less trouble if he punched Kolstad while defending himself and this happened.  The problem for Nelson is that Kolstad was on the ground and of no threat to him.  All three parties are guilty of drunken stupidity and now three lives are ruined.  Sad.
