Michael Sam vows to make Vikings pay for passing on him

Sam (left) kisses his boyfriend after being drafted Saturday.
In the wake of the Mike Priefer-Chris Kluwe controversy that erupted early this year, it would've been fitting for the Minnesota Vikings to select Michael Sam in the draft and thereby become the first NFL team to employ an openly gay player.

But the Vikings passed on him 10 times. In fact, Sam -- subject of this week's cover feature, "America's last closet: Professional sports" -- almost fell out of the draft entirely before being selected as the 249th pick (out of 255) by the St. Louis Rams.

Sam's slide into the seventh round arguably wasn't as significant as what happened next, though. Namely, The Kiss That Spawned 1,000,000 Social Media Reactions (Including this especially bizarre one). Here's the video:

Once his emotions subsided, Sam vowed to make all the teams that passed on him pay.

Asked by a reporter how he was feeling as pick after pick went by without his name being called, Sam said, "I knew I was going to get picked somewhere. And every team that passed me, I was thinking of how I was going to sack their quarterback."

Later, asked about his NFL readiness, he said, "Let me tell you something. If we were playing the Vikings right now, I'd probably have three sacks the first game." (The reference probably had more to do with the fact the Rams open the 2014 season at home against the Vikings than anything else.)

Though Sam was drafted after all, our favorite former punter thinks he probably would've gone higher if he were straight: Meanwhile, the Vikings' internal investigation into the homophobic comments coach Priefer allegedly made during the 2012 season continues. Though much of Leslie Frazier's coaching staff was dismissed, new head coach Mike Zimmer brought Priefer back as special teams coach.

People who wanted to downplay Jackie Robinson are also still racists. Time doesn't change being on the wrong side of humanity.

Cry me a river. Calling gay men "queens" is so passe and weak.

If you don't agree with Daren's opinion, you're automatically a "bigot".

I'm from Minnesota and I was making a joke about Minnesotans not exactly being people who show a lot of affection. So lighten up. And being gay - I'm not too impressed with the bigots we call the Vikings. That's not a joke.

Just plain gross. And no, we DONT have to accept it.

Tim your dumb bro!!!! Minnesotan rallied to legalize gay marriage, so I don't really think it's people in Minnesota that are disturbed! Also what does Rodgers have to do with this?

Wtf does being from Minnesota have to do with this. Last I checked gay marriage was legal here. So please make sure to know wtf your talking about before forming an opinion. The gay community is actually quite visible and has a huge support group.

not the point - most white people also boasted that jackie robinson wouldn't be up to the MLB talent level. breaking cultural barriers.

He said he was so excited and felt so good that he would be playing out of his skin and have three sacks. He feels invincible and confident and fair play to him, he's already achieved more than anyone posting on this thread.

Sam and the media are partners in making it a spectacle. The shot was totally set up. I mean why is his partner the only one close enough to be in the camera shot when the wide shot clearly showed like 10 people in the room? Because that's the shot they wanted.

Just felt like saying that... He can't make us pay if he doesn't make the team.

Interesting to watch...racism might just trump homophobia among the mental midgets that sadly make up so much of this Country.

He's a great player, first and foremost. He WAS originally a first pick for the Vikings but he came out, homophic Ziggy and his hateful coaching staff didn't want the controversy (?) . People, get over it. Let people love who they love. If this kiss makes you uncomfortable, The Duck Dynasty show is hiring. You can stay under your rock

Pretty sure the media is making a "spectacle"...any other player would say this and you wouldnt of even brought up their sexual orientation, right? Kill em Sam!

Aaron Rodgers has not come out as gay. And those disturbed about two people kissing I can only assume you are Minnesotan.

For the Record Aaron Rodgers is Gay, so not sure he is the first. First openly what exactly does that mean? The guy won't be in the league 3 years...

You also don't have to read it, or look at the pictures, or the video...but you did anyway.  I'm not sure you're as disgusted as you think you are.

Legislature passed it, not the people. The side that terrorized others tearing down signs won.

riiiiight... Let's take a look at recent SEC defensive players of the year and where they're playing now:

Jarvis Jones: Steelers

Morris Claiborne: Cowboys

Patrick Peterson: Cardinals

Rolando McClain: Ah... here you go, doesn't have a team currently, but made the raiders and played 3 seasons. Probably will be playing again (though, to be fair, if you like this guy more than Sam, you're a moral ingrate)

Eric Berry: Chiefs

Should I keep going? If he doesn't make the team, it won't be because of a lack of football skills.

Aren't you from Minnesota? I know plenty of people who stand up for gay rights, don't try and bunch us together. You make yourself seem ignorant.

@byork00  True, a recent study came out proving what we've all suspected for some time now: the most homophobic guys actually are in gay denial.

52.6% of state voters rejected a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, but believe whatever your little heart desires...

@Gah...NO__GARrrr Check the NFL ratings of potential draftees at NFL.com, Sam was way down on the list. Also, Sam was only the co-defensive player, the other being CJ Mosley.

@Onan @nondimenticar2  Sorry, they were not voting for Gay Marriage, please try some other lie.

Let's not forget, the voters were told the State Legislature would not consider Same Sex Marriage Legislation but just like the people you spoke up for, they lied.
