St. Paul animal hospital finds two puppies in recycling bin; one lives, needs home [PHOTO]

Scrappy survived a stay in a recycle bin. Unfortunately, his litter-mate did not.
A worker at St. Paul's Scenic Hills Animal hospital made a grisly discovery around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. When they went to toss something in an outdoor recycling bin, two dogs were inside of it.

One was dead. The other lived through the ordeal and is being treated at Scenic Hills.

Asked whether the deceased dog might've passed away before being put in the bin, Nikki William, a vet tech at Scenic Hills, says, "We're not completely sure, but we're pretty sure it died in there."

Regarding the surviving dog -- workers at the hospital have taken to calling him "Scrappy" -- Williams tells us that when he was found, "He was very skinny and scared, but he's already putting on weight after about two days."

Williams says the dogs are roughly six-month-old shepherd mixes that appear to be from the same litter.

Asked how long the dogs might've been in the bin, Williams says staff isn't totally sure, but Scenic Hills' recycling is only picked up once a week.

"We're thinking hopefully it was earlier that morning," she continues. "It could've been that morning, but [Scrappy] wasn't even making a sound in there. Someone went out to throw something out and saw them."

Scenic Hills has already received a number of inquiries from folks who want to adopt Scrappy, but nothing is set in stone at this point. If you're interested in taking him in, check out the hospital's website here.

"It's gonna be a while before he can go anywhere anyway," Williams says. "We're getting him fixed and up to date on shots."

Asked if Scenic Hills has ever experienced anything like finding animals in recycle bins before, Williams says, "We've had other animals dropped off but nothing like this."

My goodness these two dogs are so cute. I love their coloring, the little tuffs of black fur is so dang cut. Its so sad that someone left them in a recycling bin. Its a good thing the people who found them where able to get them to an animal hospital quickly. It seems like a good idea to know where animal hospitals are, you never know what could happen.

Oh goodness, those puppies are adorable.  That is too bad someone would dump them in a recycling bin.  Good thing the animal hospital found them in time.  I hope they go to a good home.

I'm so glad that the puppies were found and that one was able to make it out. It makes me so sad to hear stories like this! I don't know why people can't treat pets with more kindness. Cruelty like this shouldn't be tolerated with animals we rely on for support and comfort.

What a sweet puppy. I can't believe some people would be so cruel, especially when there was an animal hospital round the corner. All they had to do was drop them off at the door. At least this little guy will have a happy ending. | http://myranchobernardopethospital.com

That's so sad that somebody dumped two puppies into a recycling bin! I'm glad that the one that lived was taken in and is being cared for. Rachael is right, there are so many other dogs that have sad stories too and they need to be adopted! http://www.andrewssquarepetclinic.com/

I am so glad they were able to find them. I can't believe they were just put in the dumpster. It is good that the animal hospital was so close by. I hope the little puppy finds a good home.

It's embaressing to be of the same species as something that could do this to an animal.
