Toddler falls from 11th floor of Cedar-Riverside apartment building

Just after 7:30 p.m. yesterday, a 1-year-old boy fell from the 11th floor of an apartment building in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.

The toddler was rushed to the hospital. Reached for comment this afternoon, Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder had no update on his condition, but the Star Tribune, citing police, reports he's in critical but stable condition.

The Strib report also quotes Elder as saying the boy somehow "slipped through the railings" of an apartment balcony before falling to the ground, but Elder says the Strib "took some liberties."

"Here's what we can say -- a boy fell. That's really honestly what I know," Elder tells us.

The police report notes that fire department personnel were already on the scene when officers arrived. Firefighters were "keeping a crowd of approx 100 from the scene," the report contines.

"Officers observed that the father was near the child and stated that child fell out of the listed apartment," it adds.

But no specific address is listed on the report, and Elder and his colleague, MPD spokesman Scott Seroka, say they don't know which building the child fell from.

KARE 11 reports, however, that the incident occurred at the Riverside Towers Apartments.

Asked how often incidents like this occur, Seroka tells us, "I think you can characterize it as extremely rare."

We touched base early this afternoon with Minneapolis Fire Department Public Information Officer Chérie Penn seeking more information. She said she was just learning about the incident today and would get back to us when she was up to speed about what happened. We haven't heard back as this is published. (Update -- she got in touch with us this afternoon and referred us to the MPD.)

People would rather make their rude, stupid comments about the buildings and who lives in them than be concerned about the kid.

City Pages needs a 'vote down' for all the sanctimonious liberals who are giving a pass to bad parenting. If you live on the 11th floor you simply don't give a toddler access to the balcony.

I get where you are coming from JG...But y'all don't live 11 stories up...They are called window locks...If they're broken it's called Duct Tape...We almost never hear stories like this in DC and we have all kinds of Children living in high rises.

People are overlooking the main facts. How the hell does a 1 year old survive a 11th floor fall?

Cue the right wing, Faux News zombie trolls. Some people live entirely on hating anyone who is not like them.

Believe and miracles and send the child a prayer, people.

You can't judge either. You weren't there. I wasn't. You can have your opinion, just like the rest of the world can have an opinion. Just because you don't agree with someone's opinion does not give you the right to tell them they're wrong. People just need to get over the fact that just because someone doesn't agree, you are automatically right.

Yes. Also, ignorance. People are stupid. I've seen monkeys smarter than most of these people. If they want to believe that race has anything to do with it, let them bathe in their moronic ways. Ignorance is bliss.

Race has nothing to do with bad parenting. Some people are just stupid.

LoL you can share your opinion but you can't judge because like you said you were not there... So in reality you don't know the truth of the story... you are just making a judgmental guess. Ok I got it if someone ever procreates with you, you better be prepared to go every where with your child including taking them to the bathroom with you if you want to prevent everthing from happening.

If you realize anything can happen at anytime, don't leave your child in a situation that something like this could happen

Why play the racial remarks game this is a small child and I am sure if it was your child you would not want to go see these comments. It is a little 1yr old who cares what race the baby is the important thing is the child is alive. Accidents happen I am sure the parents are in enough shock and feel like their world has died from this incident geez some of you are some rude people.

Here's the deal. I lived in riverside plaza for a year. I am familiar with the balconies and banisters on them. It's not like this kid made mad dash and super manned through the rails. I was not there, nor were you, but i would imagine it took some time get through rails. So yes, I do have a right to share my opinion on this topic.

Krissy Sandley

Let's have this discussion again after you have kids... until then you have NO right to debate this topic.

It's a shame how poor people live. If only we could do something, collectively, as a society...

That argument is invalid. If you bring a child into this world, that life must be your first priority at all time. Otherwise don't fucking procreate. "I only looked away for a couple seconds" is a lame ass excuse.

Krissy Sandley

Obviously you don't have kids otherwise you would realize how in seconds something can happen... period. end of story.

I did a two story dive as a toddler..and it took seconds, my parents were not shitty. It was a freak accident. 11 stories is crazy. Very lucky child indeed!

This happened about 15 years or so ago. Same building, a 2 year old fell and died. The building should be torn down and rebuilt. I'm sure it's not up to code, has mold and led paint and a number or pest and rodent problems rendering the building uninhabitable. The city and building owner/manager turn a blind eye because.. Immigrants. Maybe after the 5th baby falls to it's (near) death, someone will start paying attention.

Calm your ass down, you have no clue as to what kind of parents these people are! All it takes is 2.5 seconds and there they go! Sit down.

I take it you don't have kids, Andrew.  There is a reason why things are called accidents.  I'm praying this family has a good outcome, and if there are any parenting challenges that come to light, you can believe SOMEONE in Child Protective Services will be addressing it.

If you do have kids, I pray they never have an accident and that you never turn your head for one second, ever. And heaven forbid someone should unfairly judge you and your parenting skills more than praying for your child to emerge healthy and whole afterwards.
