KSTP denies report Stanley Hubbard is sponsoring climate change denial conference [UPDATE]

KSTPhubbard.jpg
Hubbard, according to Rolling Stone, calls climate change "the biggest fraud in the history of America."
:::: UPDATE :::: As Media Matters notes, despite Radford's denial, Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. is listed as a co-sponsor of the conference on the Heartland Institute's website. As a result, Media Matters characterizes "the Hubbard team's response" as "a completely illogical dodge."

Original post (June 27) -- In a report, Media Matters dings Stanley Hubbard for "co-sponsoring a Heartland Institute conference promoting climate denial" and alleges Hubbard's skepticism has "seeped into [his] stations' reporting."

Hubbard's flagship station, of course, is KSTP. But KSTP news director Lindsay Radford tells us Media Matters has it wrong about the upcoming conference and overstates Hubbard's influence on her newsroom.

Stanley Hubbard was in Europe yesterday, but after we contacted Radford, she got in touch with his camp. Radford says Hubbard isn't actually "sponsoring" the conference, which Media Matters characterizes as providing a forum for "railing against the scientific consensus that humans are the main cause of climate change." But Hubbard did provide the Heartland Institute with a $1,000 check for an award to be given out during it, Radford says. (Media Matters notes that sponsors of the conference contribute anywhere from $150 to $10,000, so it's possible Media Matters and Radford are using different terms for the same thing.)

Media Matters cites a number of examples to support the allegation that climate change denial has seeped into KSTP's reporting, including that the station featured Heartland Institute CEO Joseph Bast as a guest during its programming last fall, aired a 10-minute Heartland Institute video entitled "Unstoppable Solar Cycles" espousing the claim that recent climate change is being driven by changes in the sun, and employs meteorologist Dave Dahl, who believes the sun, not man, causes climate change.

But Radford sent us a statement denying that Hubbard's personal views have an impact on KSTP's reporting.

"Just like any story, we strive to give all sides," Radford wrote. "We are not a spoon-fed newsroom, which means we believe in doing our own research and questioning everything. This news department does not have an agenda when it comes to climate change. It is our job to present the facts and let the viewers decide."

Radford did acknowledge that as a policy, the station uses "climate change" on the air instead of "global warming." But she says that's simply because "climate change" is a more politically neutral term.

Climate change, global warming, or the let me tell how to live your life disorder of environMENTALism, all have one thing in common. They all involve a situation where science is unable to define a result.   They also involve a collection of predictions that rarely come true. That's OK though, as the poll tested coined phrases, and dooms day predictions, easily confuse the average believer into following the scam down the next rat hole.

So if someone is for climate change, they are right and if someone is against it, they have an agenda and they are a fraud and apparently they have something to do with a conspiracy? To quote Clark Griswold, I think you are all fucked in the head.

Indeed, but you made two errors: one the history of the phrase and effects of an excess of co2 in the atmosphere. Now, since in your expertise, you seem to know that global warming has been proven to be false, would you care to offer up that proof?

Adam Folk

Climate change is actually a more accurate description of the phenomena than global warming. Some areas will see a change in weather patterns, which could actually lead to cooler periods in parts of the world. Btw, global warming was never "proven false." That didn't happen. If anything, with each passing day it's being proven more right.

Climate change happens in a living organism. Its been changing forever. The Industrial Revolution was way worse than what we have now. That does not mean we don't need to really get our act together....but this is not news. The argument back and forth clearly is.

Shane J. Pinske

i don't care who coined it..the climate has been changing since day 1

The serious lack of knowledge about how both science and climate change work in these posts is scary. Do you question Stephen Hawking when he discusses quantum mechanics? What about Einstein and relativity? Or the Higgs Boson discovery? No? Then stop questioning the thousands of scientists worldwide who have independently come to the same conclusion based on hundreds of real-world observations of the environment. Yes, the earth has warmed in the past, but there was a cause each time. This time, we (by burning fossil fuels) are the cause.

Shane J. Pinske
Shane J. Pinske

Anyone else notice that it used to be called global warming then that was proven false they now changed it to climate change? The climate is always changing, it has been since the earth was formed

I can't proof read on my phone very well at all. Tiny 4 line box. Can't edit comments I have already made so if there is an error use logic and figure it out.

I meant planetary parasites in the way we are draining oil. Killing off all the other life forms on the planet with very little regard. Anyways only some are evolving on that direction. We are at a cross roads. The time has come to make a choice what direction we want to go. Right now we are draining the planet that gave us life. Very parasitic of us.

Mel UgoFurst
Mel UgoFurst

Say, for all those worried about parasitic humans destroying the earth, you are also sucking oxygen vas expelling co2. So do you propose selectively eliminating humans?

Brian Nelson
Brian Nelson

That's a cop out. If you have the appropriate studies then provide them. Please explain why the methodology is correct. You can't make an argument and not provide the evidence. I'm happy hear what you have to say.

Nicole Schumacher
Nicole Schumacher

Right! Cause we are evolving planetary parasites. Draining the earth of all it's resources. Sucking the book out with no regard to the host. Like giant mechanic ticks. Many scientist knew the earth was round the scientific community and the political community tugged back and forth back and forth. Throughout human history people knew and throughout history they did not. Kinda similar to the push and pull of we effect our surroundings vs no we don't we can do as we please vs no we don't we have responsibilities on and on tug and pull. Pretty sure at some point 99% of the scientific community started to agree it was round at some point and now gasp everyone knows it is round. We effect our environment and more and more people are understanding that. You my friend are on the side of history that will get laughed at. Remember when we thought pumping non-breathable gas into the atmosphere affected nothing hahaha what idiots. See that idiot is you my friend.

You wouldn't believe me if I did. You must seek the truth for yourself. Start with asking yourself one question, since when did 99% of scientists agree on any theory? 50 years from now, we'll all have a good laugh when someone brings up global warming. It will seem as silly as thinking the world was flat.

Brian Nelson
Brian Nelson

Sco, if you are going to make such a claim then you need to back it up. Again, can you show me the flaws in the methodology?

Brian Nelson
Brian Nelson

Can you explain why John Tyndall a moron? Indeed there was more co2 and the planet was much warmer. But, over the last 800k years the planet's co2 levels remained below 300ppm. We are now at 400ppm. Consequently the global average temperature has gone up.

Nicole Schumacher

This is climate change: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch So is this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/bethhoffman/2013/07/02/gmo-crops-mean-more-herbicide-not-less/ This is also a chance in the earths climate: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/115883/drugs-drinking-water-new-epa-study-finds-more-we-knew This is human induced change as well: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pesticide_toxicity_to_bees And so and so forth. Climate change isn't just about temperatures rising. Which they are but they would be anyway right? This is what you are basing your theory on. The climate has always changed but despite the fact that there would be a gradual increase at this time anyways much proof has been gathered to the fact that we are increasing it. Also a whole lot of evidence proves that increasing the oxygen concentration and decreasing the co2 concentration in our air would build a stronger and more stable atmosphere between our little blue speck of a planet and the radiation of our life giving sun. As well as protecting humans place in this vast vast universe.

Nicole Schumacher

You can find everything we are saying online too. From far far more reliable sources.

Nicole Schumacher

Was there more oxygen too? Do you have a comparison or proof of this? Do you know how much was needed by the life forms on the planet at the time? Do you know how much oxygen 7 billion humans need? Do you know what the temp on the planet was at that time? Do you know what the soil content was? Do you know that humans were not on the planet at the time pumping out way more co2 than they allow to be created? Do you know what the ozone layer was at the time. Do you have proof?

Yes, every model. Don't take my word for it. You can find everything on the line.

The only thing proven over and over again, is that EVERY model showing rapid 'global warming' is dead wrong. The climate (since existence) has always been changing (even before humans). The only thing filling the atmosphere with toxic, non-believable, hot air, is the morons like you who think you know what you're talking about

Robert Olson
Robert Olson

You just changed my mind. You are right and these so called 'facts and logic' people use nowadays as opposed to logic from hundreds of years ago makes what you said a legit comparison and also means what's happening to our planet is a hoax and thank you for teaching us all the truth

Nicole Schumacher

So our soil being filled with toxic pesticide that have been proven to kill bees and butterflies who pollinate our food is nonsense? Billions of pesticides are pumped into the soil every year and that is just a myth? Have you ever heard of cause and affect? Or chemistry? Our drinking water is contaminated with hormones and medication. Proven in ever state but that is a myth? People don't flush pills down the toilet? I have worked med administration and protocol was down the drain. Flushed a bunch myself. Plants are an essential part of balancing the air quality. We destroy them massively and limit their space on the planet. Is that a myth? Cause we can all watch it happening all the time. The sand at beaches are rich in plastic powder. The ocean filled with it. Sea life consuming it accidentally. Entire islands of plastic forming. You can view them. Visit them. Is that a myth? Every single one of those involves our climate and those are all direct and provable ways we are changing it. Check your definitions of climate and change. Your snark is amusing but your ignorance is not.

Mel UgoFurst

^ not true, the 'science' has been shakey at best with much fraud occurring, and as clay rightly points out, at the whim of the political system as yet another way to justify more control over the population.

You don't even realize that your belief has no definition.  "It could do this, or it could do that. I actually can't put a pen to what it will do.  Either way, I have faith it will do something."

Your religion offers a bit of delusion, that's for sure.

The article you link to doesn't say what you claim it says. Luntz wanted Bush to switch from "global warming" to "climate change", but he didn't invent the term and the Guardian does not claim he did.

Your serious lack of knowledge about how both science and climate change work would be scary, if I were as easily scared as you. Michael Mann is no Steven Hawking, but, yes, it is perfectly proper to question Steven Hawking or any other authority on his subject -- THAT is how science works (and Hawking has changed his mind about about many things, as did Einstein about the Cosmological Constant, etc.)

Where did you come up with the ludicrous idea that the members of the Church of Climate Alarmism came to "independent" conclusions, btw. If the Climategate emails prove anything beyond any doubt it is that conclusions were orchestrated.

...and plants suck co2 and expel oxygen.  Your point?  It's a symbiotic relationship.  Except when you dump millions of tons of additional co2 into the atmosphere from power plants, cars, etc - then it's not so symbiotic anymore.

MNjoe

@Dave2 Physics is right.  There is no argument to be made, it's all simple cause and effect.  The Earth absorbs visible light, then radiates it back as infrared light.  CO2 absorbs infrared but not visible.  The more CO2, the more IR light absorbed by the atmosphere.  When a gas absorbs light, it gets warmer.  We have increasing levels of CO2 - every year is a new record high (measured on top of a mountain in hawaii for accuracy).

There's no question about this, no room for discussion, it's as simple as "when you push something, it moves."  Global warming is happening, and it's due to physics.  Really basic physics I may add, the kind any highschool AP physics student should understand.
