:::: UPDATE :::: 9-year-old pot snitch told police, "Doing drugs is bad"

A 9-year-old girl recently walked into a police station in the western Minnesota town of Barnesville and calmly reported her parents for growing marijuana inside their home.

"Her and one of her friends came here and just had these concerns about her parents," Barnesville Police Chief Dean Ernst tells us, adding that the friend was about the girl's age.

The girl explained she was bothered by the smoke.

"[Her parents] would smoke it in the house, and when she would smell the smoke, she said she didn't like the smell, it made her sick," Ernst says. "And they would blow the smoke into their dog's face or nose and she didn't like that, said it was bad for the dog."

Police got a search warrant. Inside the home they found eight plants growing in a basement room.

"I want to say it was approximately an 8-foot-by-8 foot room, with growing lights in there," Ernst says. "They had an air conditioner to keep the temperature regulated and stuff like that. It wasn't like a regular basement -- in the kitchen area they had a trapdoor that basically gave access down in there. It was more of a crawlspace area."

In addition to the plants, an amount of dried marijuana "consistent with what an individual user would have" was found in the home, along with drug paraphernalia. The girl told cops her parents also sold pot, according to Ernst.

Charges haven't yet been brought against the couple -- "investigators are still finishing a couple things up," Ernst tells us, without providing their names -- but they voluntarily agreed to let the girl stay with her grandparents for the time being.

How do you know she will regret her decision? And does it make you feel powerful to judge a CHILD, especially one that you don't even know? You have no idea about the things that went on in this home, because you weren't there. It is more likely than not that this was not a great environment for a child. It's really sad that you, as well as others, are more concerned about the parents' arrest than the physical and psychological well-being of the child.

The girl shouldn't have gone to any authorities. The parents should have been more attentive for sure but nobody is perfect.. it just so happens that they were breaking the (ridiculous) law. Everyone needs to get over pot and what people do with it. If these parents were burning legal herbs and growing legal flowers and it bothered their kid, nobody would give a damn!! Just because these parents were growing pot, they should lose their child and beloved pet? No. A life of being hotboxed by your birth parents who love you even though they're a little foolish is hands down better than any foster family ever could be to this girl. She will undoubtedly regret her decision later in life which is why myself and so many others disagree with it.

Is this legal? Can the police obtain a search warrant based on the statement of a 9 yr old for something like this? I think not.

Poor kid. She's gonna feel awful as an adult... when she's still visiting them in prison.

Yeah Angie, telling someone to 'grow up' is probably the lamest thing you could possibly say.

I hope she plans on not seeing her parents for awhile

For 9 yr old to know what it is and that it was illegal is odd.its probably the tip of the iceberg and I'm sure there are other things happening in the home not good for a child.its not that hard to keep it away from kids.its people like this that keep it illegal.

I will admit that my response may have been a bit of a knee jerk overreaction. I still feel that there may have been a better way to handle the situation without appealing to an authority, but perhaps this isn't quite the glaring example of American snitch culture that I had initially stated.

(Daniel) How do you know she didn't confront her parents before going to the cops? Seriously, it probably wasn't her first choice. And shotgunning the dog is just WRONG.

Grow up? How is a disdain for state intervention in even the smallest of disputes a sign of immaturity? When children are being taught to report anything to the authorities rather than having a rational discussion with their parents there is something wrong.

When I was a teenager I knew a guy whose parents started smoking weed and used sage to cover the smell. When he brought the fact that sage was a headache trigger to his folks attention they quit burning it.

You have no basis for knowing that they wouldn't have listened. I've known parents whose children requested they stop smoking cigarettes in the house, or other negatively impactful behaviours, and the parents then fell over themselves to change the situation. Frequently people don't realise that their behaviour is negatively impacting those around them until it is brought to their attention.

Like the parents would have listened. If they didn't see a problem with what they were doing - why would they change their behavior?!

Good for the girl! Fine, grow pot - who cares. But don't smoke it around your children, blow it in your animals face and think that is acceptable - it's not. My opinion - LOSER parents!

Don't get me wrong, her parents shouldn't have been smoking around her and certainly shouldn't have been shotgunning the dog but it is appalling to me that we've created a culture where instead of resolving our issues directly we encourage people to run to an authority.

I don't think it is ok to smoke cigarettes around children and pets either, but it isn't illegal, just immoral. And how would drinking around a child harm them? You clearly don't have children and please don't because your gene pool needs to end.

I agree with the not smoking around your kid stuff on here but so it's ok to smoke cigarettes and drink liqour around them as well?>?????

This thread is a huge reason I don't think I could have kids. "#TheseHoesAintLoyal" Again, I know it's a joke, but no WAY I could have a 9yr old daughter and people are callin her a snitch-ass ho.....adults are so obnoxious sometimes.

You sound confused. First of all THIS study and if that site doesn't satisfy you there are plenty more. 2nd of all I think you missed my point I DON'T want to see the parents go to jail over this and I don't believe the parents should lose custody. I was saying people are sitting around angry at a 9 year old kid while behind our backs the powers that be are trying to stifle legalization attempts here in MN. A 9-year-old doesn't have a clue about our failed drug war, all they are taught is pot=bad. But calling a kid a snitch does NOTHING to change our stupid drug laws. And clearly the state has decided the kid DOES have a right to live in a pot-free household-that's why they moved her. I'm for legalization, and increased funding for medical marijuana research. Kids who have a myriad of health problems can certainly benefit from cannabis, but this is a COMPLETELY different context than "My kid has epilepsy and I was giving her the plant." And I STILL say shame on CP for using the same rhetoric from the "stop snitching" movement. In the real world, "snitches" HAVE gotten stitches or worse, and a lot of folks seem perfectly fine with blaming a kid for our country's shitty drug laws and her parents' poor decisions.

It's a neat little sermon, but this is more likely a consequence of authoritarian folks like you messing with a child's worldview to the point that child would rather see its parents in jail than tresspass against the big ol' DARE officer in the sky, than any general or specific "stupidity".

1- what scientifically demonstrated effects would those be, and did you get that info from your ass? Why should we believe you, a known pot-smoking degenerate? 2- we don't fuck children and animals because it's exploitative and violent and WRONG, unlike reefin' 3- of course her parents won't be rehabilitated, they belong to the prison-industrial complex that you seem positively gleeful to cheerlead here 4- no children don't have those rights. That is why we can vaccinate them, demand they attend schools, and separate them from their families in cases such as these... please think before posting

nonsense. All vertebrates can benefit from the healing herb. My dog chooses to join me tokin. This child has been so confused by boundary-less busybodies like YOU that it shot its own future in the foot to please the police state. THAT is not ok and why we need legalization NOW. Before your and others' baseless opinions ruin more families forever.

Its a shame that these parents were so dumb that they didn't hide it from the kid... Responsible stoner parents (I believe these exist) would not smoke in front of their child let alone get the dog high.  Kids have such a heightened sense of insecurity and guilt to begin with around that age. On the other hand it is too bad that now (because they were stupid) her parents are now in the system and she will be lucky not to get CPS'd to sexually abusive foster parents (just sayin' the grass aint always greener)

Glad the child realized that she had a choice. She didn't have to be involved in her parents habit if she chose not to.

What people are so frustrated about is the ridiculousness of the law.  Marijuana is harmless especially in relation to tobacco and alcohol, that is in fact a scientific fact.  The harsh comments about the girl are "tongue-in-cheek" its obvious she thought she was doing the right thing, but I agree that she will regret doing this later in life as soon as she is old enough to be cynical about our draconian laws in regards to cannabis.
