Abortions at record low in MN thanks to health care access, contraceptive mandate, NARAL says

Planned Parenthood performed 4,370 abortions in Minnesota last year, the most of any organization.
The number of abortions performed in Minnesota last year was the lowest since the state began collecting data on the procedures in 1975.

There were 9,903 abortions performed in the state in 2013. That's down from 10,700 in 2012 and represents the first time on record the number has fallen below 10,000.

To give you some context, the year with the most abortions was 1980, when there were 19,028 performed in Minnesota. Abortion numbers have fallen for 11 of the past 12 years.

Linnea House, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota, attributes last year's drop to more women using long-term contraception as a result of having access to health care that covers it. (The federal government's so-called "contraceptive mandate" went into effect in August 2012.)

"One of the things we're seeing is there's been an increase in people getting access to long-term contraception -- IUDs, patches, those types of things -- and you're going to see unintended pregnancy rates decline as a result," House tells us. "The other is that pharmaceutical companies are creating better and longer-lasting affordable contraceptives that are accessible and have no negative effects on women. That's good for public health."

But the news about declining abortions rates is somewhat bittersweet in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby decision, House says.

"There are a whole host of corporations behind Hobby Lobby that want to apply for the same exemptions," House says. "We don't know what the implications are going to be other than a whole subset of people who are paying for insurance won't have access to the contraception they want."

Still, the historic decrease in abortions is good news for everybody involved.

The lesson, House says, is that "people who have good consistent health care coverage have better health care outcomes."

Abortion is legal. Abortion is not murder. It's healthcare that woman deserve access to if they choose to do so. Just like you choose to get other medical services in your life, this is no different. I'll always stand beside Planned Parenthood and I think it's AMAZING the work that they do. Keep your opinions and beliefs off the bodies of other people you don't know.

Abortions are down, number of welfare recipients is up. Coincidence, or should people be required to take a test before they bring another person into this world they can't afford to love or feed and treat solely as a paycheck? Personally, I am all for less breeding.

It doesn't matter why someone has an abortion. It's legal and not anyone else's business.

Abortion is murder. It's unfortunate that some people feel it's justified. If people would just stop having sex until they're married to a member of the opposite sex for life, SO MANY of our problems would be solved. Just stop fucking around. How hard is that?

Regardless on your stance on abortion, I think we can all agree that its great that the number went down.

Here's a genius idea: if you don't believe in abortion, don't ever have one. Men - if you don't believe in abortion, don't fuck a woman that does. SIMPLE. Period. No more discussion.

Why, Jessica? How does a woman making a choice about her body affect you AT ALL?

When I worked as a community health coord., I case managed plenty of girls and their parents as well as other women who didn't bother going on birth control but DID repetitively use abortion as their reactive form of birth control.....it was so common it was scary, especially with the younger girls and ladies and my doubts they fully were able to make their own informed decisions....

It takes two to tango Eric but only the woman (and possibly the child) have to pay for both parties bad choices. Lol child support #YesAllMyMoney

If you were pro-choice, why would you say such ridiculous things like "Wheres the feminists protecting children?" Seems a little odd, to me.

A fetus is always human lmao. It doesn't go from like crocodile to human at 28 weeks or something.

Glad to hear the emergency contraception are working better than going through an abortion. Even though I'm not totally against abortions in general, I think it's not the best and easiest option. While it's not murder in my opinion, it's just painful afterwards and it still carries a negative stigma.

Oh good lord, NO ONE uses abortion as birth control. Anyone who says that is completely ignorant. Anyone that I have ever talked to that did, went through painstaking agony to reach that decision...and there isn't a day that goes by that it doesn't weigh on their shoulders. Contraception is now free (all forms) and this is probably the result of it. The cost of providing free birth control is by far less expensive than supporting someone for 17 years (note to taxpayers). You are right Andrew, I never reply on these things but Jessica and Corey are sad people and comments like that are hateful.

Jessica, you don't get to tell other women what to do with their bodies, thank goodness!

Those of us that don't like abortion (I don't) should really be all about expanding contraception access. The best way to lower the number of abortions is to make unwanted pregnancy less common. The best way to do that is to expand contraception access. I will pay for any person who wants an implanon or nexplanon.

Abortion is legal, get over it. Only a woman and her doctor should get to decide what's right.

Madison Allen

Well, considering abortions don't happen then, that's really a non issue. Almost all abortions occur in the first trimester. So whatever your point is going to be is invalid.

Voting for pro life progressives will make for less abortions in the world.  Poverty causes abortion.  The party that takes care of the poor and makes sure the middle class get a fair shake will see less abortions.  No one wants to have an abortion.  If a woman thinks she can give her child a good life more often than not she is going to have the kid.  That's how people are.

Republicans demonize the poor and refuse to spend money on food stamps and healthcare.  Do you think making poverty as miserable as possible is a good way to encourage new mothers to have a child?    Calling people welfare queens and lazy has consequences.

Exactly what problems do you have that require people remain virgins until marriage?  Wouldn't it be wonderful if people would stop concerning themselves with what happened in other people's bedrooms?

"Abortion is murder"

The law of the land disagrees with your assessment.

"If people would just stop having sex until they're married to a member of the opposite sex for life, SO MANY of our problems would be solved."

I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to explain that one.

@Kimi4188632 Actually, the best and cheapest way to make unwanted pregnancy less common is to not have sex if you don't want to get knocked up.
