Officers gather at the site of Billingsley Jr.'s murder.
The man videotaped lying dead last Thursday on a north Minneapolis street was shot dead after confronting 16-year-old Joshua Ford on a Metro Transit Rout 19 bus near 26th and Penn Avenues N., authorities say.

Billingsley Jr., 38, "came to the front door of the bus and got into a verbal argument with [Ford] and his companions regarding their harassment of the [his] son," the second-degree murder charges against Ford say. "The bus driver saw the [Ford] draw a gun from his waistband and told the victim to get off the bus, which he did."

The driver summoned police to the scene by activating the bus's silent alarm during the confrontation.

As Billingsley Jr. fled, Ford "went out the back door of the bus and started shooting at the victim," the charges continue. "According to witnesses, the victim ran in front of the bus as [Ford] continued to shoot at him. The victim then ran towards the nearby gas station and [Ford] continued to shoot at him until the victim fell to the ground."

The bus driver jumped off the bus and started performing CPR on Billingsley Jr., but it was too late -- he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found six discharged cartridge casings and one fired bullet nearby.

Ford got away but was arrested the next day. As a juvenile, his mugshot wasn't available for public release, Hennepin County court officials tell us. Prosecutors intend to try him as an adult.

Billingsley Jr.'s murder was the 17th in Minneapolis so far this year, a police spokesman says.

The kid, at 16?, yeah, a kid, to not give a shit about another life? What is wrong with ourselves? This kid grew up in America. Minnesota. Minneapolis. This IS OUR society! Why are WE failing? Guns, ghetto, race? Bullshit! It is always deeper

Very sad and my thoughts and prayers go to the deceased and the families.

I agree that this makes a great case on why you should have your permit to carry and do so. This man was doing what most parents would do, Addressing alleged bullies. Too bad this kid is such a punk he had to murder the father who confronted him. This is beyond frustrating and I am sick of these bastard kids running around with no parental supervision, acting like disrespectful thugs and shooting people because they are too scared to back themselves up with fists or intellect.

when you work or live in the ghetto this is why you 1, carry a gat, or 2, mind your own business and deal with the issue indirectly. R.I.P

16 year old tries acting tough and murdering someone for no good reason. I hope he enjoys his life behind bars. idiot kids

He will be spending quite a bit of "Quality Time" with bigger, stronger predators. Sad.

Messed up - as a driver for Metro Transit, it makes me afraid to say anything to anyone on the bus, especially teenagers, even though we are supposed to keep the peace:(

I can't believe he chased after him! We have to be scared as adults of 16 year olds with guns... Where did he get that gun?

Don't even waste a bullet. Dig a hole and bury him.

Firing squad for Ford. Sounds fair and cheaper than taking care of the bum kid for life

16-year-old Joshua Ford, nope sorry son you should not get a second chance. Horrifying

How awful! That kid needs to be tried as an adult. That's completely senseless murder and he should be put away for life. People like that don't deserve freedom.

So true.  Where did he get the gun? What happened in his life that made him so hopeless that he decided to kill someone over an argument.  WHY was he carrying a gun?  The kid's brain isn't even fully developed yet.

Actually race has a lot to do with it. Google "crime by race".

Lol!  Good one.

This type of behavior is the product of rap "music" culture, the babydaddy/babymama lifestyle, and DFL policies.

Probably from an irresponsible 'good guy with a gun.'

Wouldn't you be happier living in Somalia or North Korea with that attitude?

also get a cop on this bus ASAP for a year or so, it's clear this bus is not safe (check out the daily planet article). I say grab one from " Calhoun Patrol" and give them a real job.

@MNjoe No, statistically black-on-black shootings involve stolen guns. But nice try trying to blame it on the NRA.

whereisthiskidsdad
whereisthiskidsdad

@MNjoe if that was what would happen to people who did this I think there would be a lot more people thinking twice. Maybe not though, this doesn't sound like a person who thinks about a whole lot of anything.

MNjoe

@WatusiJenkins @MNjoe Actually, I didn't mention the NRA in my comment but I guess your reading skills are a bit substandard. As for stolen guns, yes, that's what I said - an irresponsible 'good guy with a gun.'  (Hint - he probably didn't secure the weapon and it was stolen. Thanks for playing.

@whereisthiskidsdad @MNjoe These are the people who pick and choose what parts of the Constitution they want to follow - it works the same for them with the bible so not a big surprise.

@MNjoe  Just so we're clear:

1. one criminal breaks into my home

2. they break my safe and acquire my gun

3. they choose to put it in the hands of  a 16 year old

4. That 16 year old decides to carry it

5. that 16 year old decides that he's been 'disrespected' and runs down and murders a man.

And in your mind, this is MY fault?

MNjoe
MNjoe topcommenter

@_Joe_ @MNjoe Just so we're clear - a responsible gun owner a) keeps his gun in a safe and/or b) has a trigger lock installed.  If the thief can beat that, no it's not their fault. But most of the time, a thief (or what passes as one these days) can't break a safe or a trigger lock - but the irresponsible gun owner won't utilize either of those, in fact, he's more likely to leave it lying around so kids can get it.

_Joe_
_Joe_

@MNjoe @_Joe_

Safes and trigger locks are okay for keeping children from screwing around with guns, but most devices on the market (sub $2k anyway) can be defeated easily.  Surprisingly quickly actually.
