Comment of the Day: Dealing with Comcast

NetNeutralityCover.jpg
This week's cover feature, written by Chris Parker, is entitled, "The fall of net neutrality: Cable's plot to destroy the internet."

One of the main anti-neutrality forces, of course, is Comcast, which, as the piece details, forced Netflix to pay an undisclosed amount of money not to have its streaming service slowed down for those accessing it via Comcast's cables.

Stories of that sort and Comcast's notoriously poor customer service are prompting people like TC4L to "cut the cable":

cutthecablecomment.jpg

And does anybody doubt that Comcast is still making money off subscribers like TC4L, even when they manage to "negotiate" their way down to a relatively low per-month price?

We currently have Comcast internet service ONLY. In Dec. 2013 I received 2 boxes from Comcast with equipment that I didn't order. I called them and they told me that it they sent me the TV modems "just in case my satellite went out". I said no thanks, and they asked me to return the equipment to the local Comcast store (15 miles out of my way). OK so I did. The next week I got another box from Comcast with the same damn TV equipment. I called them back and they again told me to return it to the Comcast store. I told them I was going to throw it the street before I would go out of my way to return equipment I didnt ask for...again. They sent a return box and I sent it back to them. Fast forward to present day and I have had an $8 TV equipment charge on my bill EVERY MONTH since then. Every month I look at my statement and get more and more furious over the equipment charge from hell. And every month I have to call them to have the charges removed and get reassurance that "next month it will be different". Yesterday I was working from home and suddenly my internet just stopped working. Called Comcast AGAIN, this time with tech support and we did the whole reset/unplug cords routine which did nothing. So now I have to leave work early to meet the technician to get it fixed. I told them that I DARE THEM to charge me a service charge for this. We are also moving in 2 weeks and they had the nerve to call and ask if they could set up a time to 'relocate' our service. Any guesses how that phone call ended? I'd rather go without internet then give them another dime for nothing but nonsense and comically horrible customer service.

Rupar, the problems with Netflix have nothing to do with Net Neutrality. Netflix doesn't want to pay for transit, something that every other business on the internet has to pay for. They don't want business costs to cut into their profits so they started a PR war.

Qwest has told me that I can get 40 gigabit internet for $30/month for the first year. With no contract after those first 12 months. I am going to question them pretty hard on how I can get out of the 12 month if their service isn't up to par with what they are promising.

I'm on year 13 with no cable. Had the same modem for 12 years ($80 one time) just switched modems for bigger coverage in new house.

Go with centurylink and get the 10mbps that they average in MN compared to the 40 they advertise on all their commercials lol.

Its a luxury. It's not a necessity so if you don't want to pay for tv entertainment then don't. #1 Internet provider in the US tho can't deny that. Go with dish or direct then come watch the game at my house after the wind blows your signal out.

They upsold us Starz for $1 a month.... only one Starz channel (out of 8 or something) actually come in (the other 7 just say 'Please wait blah blah blah'). just a week ago I did a test, I took away the 2 HD cable TV boxes from the family TV's to see how long it would take anyone in the house to say something.... lol no one has said anything yet (I live with 6 people in the family). I'm returning my boxes tomorrow. why should I have to pay for commercials? those used to be free.

BlastPlus double play includes HBO and 50mbps and is only 79.95. Good deal.

Want to known a secret? When getting a Comcast install ask for a contractor through prewire or digitek. The standards we are held too are much higher, we are compensated according to the quality of our work and our signal stats are monitored daily or we are sent back if your modem is not in the optimal range. In house reps are hourly, avoid large fixes, and have little to no quality standards.

Thanks :-) We don't have a home phone. Our wireless carrier doesn't provide comparable internet service. A CenturyLink sales rep came to our door and wanted a generous install fee and about the same monthly rate. She got snotty when I said I would need to think about it and research it a little before making the switch, so I passed.

On just the television part of my Comcast bill, I was dropping nearly $100 a month until I canceled my account in March. Once or twice a year, I'd call them threatening to leave (but not really planning to), and they'd give me a "customer retention" deal, knocking maybe $20-$25 off my bill for 6 months. I still have Comcast for my internet service, but I might have to give CenturyLink another look.

We moved to VA for a couple years and were spoiled by Verizon cable and internet. Its pretty much the only thing we miss since moving back to MN. I so wish Verizon would move here. \U0001f615

We cut Comcast cable a few years ago and have been happily streaming ever since :-) ...Although we do still subscribe to their not-so-high-speed internet service, we will gladly cut that too as soon as another option is available.

US Internet's fiber...if you can get it, get it. A much better deal with much better service. Don't fall for Comcast's bundle bullshit either. USI is a better deal in the long run once Comcast's introductory rates disappear.

Comcast SUCKS!! Snail mail often doesn't get payment there on time..they have even called me ON A HOLIDAY (the fourth) and demanded payment AT THAT moment or threatened to turn me off!!! And this is on top of a three month fight over my "lightening fast" INTERNET that costs a fortune.. Not working for nearly three months and their techs blaming it on MY computer!!! When corp.FINALLY got my letters and HAD a TECH come out- he found faulty COMCAST equipment.. But NO compensation was made and no apologies given!!! Rates are continuously going up...They suck at ANY kind of CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I just wish apartment renters had a choice!!! Mine(most)don't allow sattle lite TV....I had DISH for ten years...LOVED them!!! ESPECIALLY their attention to CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! They were the BEST!!!\U0001f628\U0001f631\U0001f625

I will be cutting my ties in 2 weeks when I current month is done. I will have to pay a $150 termination fee because apparently they stuck me in a contract, but I will be saving over that per month after ditching them. $100 a month for cable tv alone with no premium channels. And this is how they treat a customer of 15 years! Never again. Thank god we are starting to get some other decent internet providers in the metro area.

I just canceled my Comcast cable a few weeks at also. Its not worth the price at all.

I've been without cable, internet and phone here in upstate NY since 1/1/13. It hasn't been easy but I've managed. I'm headed back to Mpls in a month and freaking out about how Comcast is going to gouge me. Are there alternatives?
