Comment of the Day: Why Kluwe matters

kluwenewser.jpg
Kluwe during yesterday's downtown Minneapolis news conference
These days, every time we post about former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, we're inundated with comments asking us, "Why do you waste ink on this guy?" and, "Aren't his 15 minutes over?"

Fact is, Kluwe's core allegation -- that Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer said, "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows" during a team meeting in 2012 -- is very significant. Especially when you consider the extent to which bigotry of all forms is becoming less tolerated in professional sports and mainstream society in general.

The point was made nicely yesterday by commenter Andy Larson in response to our latest coverage of Kluwe's threatened lawsuit against the Vikings:

Given that he scheduled his big news conference to coincide with the national media circus in town yesterday for the MLB All-Star Game, it's also fair to say Kluwe is a great self-promoter. But that doesn't diminish the significance of the legal battle he now plans to fight against his former employer.

He's still getting a paycheck. It's selling books and doing personal appearances. If this was all about money, why did he not sue them straight away - instead of give them the chance to investigate his story and come clean if need be?

I predict forcing the issue with lawsuits at every turn will alienate your agenda and goal. At some point you need to get a spine and a thicker skin. -from a minority.

It's ironic the best punter of all time is ray guy

Sometimes I read the comments to articles and wonder why half of you even follow city pages lol. Just need to make a statement half the people think you should shut up about and keep to yourself? Kinda reminds me of the feedback this guy I just read an article about has been receiving...except that guy was actually trying to make the world a better place...Just to clarify, I'm talking about Kluwe...it seems like that might go over a few heads around here.

I'm a proud Kluwe supporter. I genuinely don't think he would be making this much of a spectacle if there wasn't truth to it. He's a very intelligent, articulate, educated man who is destined for things greater than the Vikings who suck anyway. And to have a straight man, married with children, professional athlete, be such an ambassador for the rights of the GLBTQ community is pretty cool too. So use that ink. Hatred and bigotry in such high level organization should be exposed.

Why did the Raiders also cut this "has been." Answer, he sucks. Chris, get over it. You are a loser!

"Gays weren't a protected class at that time." Really Shawn? This was 2 years ago, not 50 years ago. Believe it or not, gay people have had rights in this country for a good long time.

He was bringing this to light before he lost his job. It's not like he didn't follow the chain of command, he just didn't go public until he was no longer employed. His skills were not the best anymore but to think this had nothing to do with the Vikes decision is pure stupidity.

I'd take the statements of a guy suing his former employer after being cut from the team and washed up with the NFL with a grain of salt. Ask yourself now City Pages if that matters.

I applaud your using ink to talk about Chris Kluwe. It is interesting to see how many people waste ink to illustrate their ignorance.

it's not wasting ink! keep the stories coming! i for one support Kluwe in exposing the Vikings and the NFL... go Kluwe (btw, I'm a Packer fan)

He was a horrible punter point blank..is also why he lost his job in Oakland to a rookie. He was straight garbage

No need to explain this since the people who are trashing him aren't bright enough to pay attention anyway. It doesn't affect them directly, so it doesn't matter. As soon as something like this affects them, it becomes the worst thing since Hitler and Stalin.

You can bet your ass that had they used the same kind of language with regards to Christians, Teabaggers, or white people these same fools would be losing what little is left of their minds. (I would say they would go nuts, but it's clear they are already there)

This is just how batshit crazy narcissists operate. It's to be expected.

Privilege?? Hmm......interesting assuming I'm of privilege. You know what they say! The only thing I'm of privilege of is going to work 40-60 hours a week..... Raising a family in this day and age where pro sports stars/coaches are given more news clips then any of them are really worthy of!! Kluwe is a punk..... With a big mouth..... Who thought he could say/do anything he wanted without repercussion.... Same goes for the d-bag coach/coaches..... Guess what, they're only words..... Get over the PC crap!! If what the coach supposedly said was really happening, then I might give a hoot!! I don't care, I'm too busy making a real living for my family!! I guess there's no other real news stories to cover?? Peace, Joe

Yawn, indeed! It must be fun to have so much privilege that you actually tire of hearing about people in positions of power getting called out on their bigotry against people who aren't you. Who are these not-you people, anyway? What's the big deal about wanting to fill an island full of people who aren't you and blow it up, or about walking around all day operating in a position of power from that sort of worldview? Who cares? Who, indeed. Yawn. CP, thank you for continuing to cover this. It is important, whether everyone gets that or not.

He still doesn't matter -- his case is bupkis and his attorney knows it, that's why he's angling to settle out of court before it even starts. The Vikes may give him a golden muzzle just to end this once and for all, but he knows he'd never win in court. Gays weren't a protected class at that time. He's more than free to advocate for whatever he wants, but that doesn't mean he was anything other than an expendable line on a payroll whose departure was never felt because he wasn't that good.

He was a professional athlete. People are suppose to attack his athletic skill.

Wow, getting emotional over this? He explained why he didn't bring it up during the season and it makes perfect sense.

Ray Baltera

No. Kluwe can just go fuck himself. Convenient how he waited until he wasnt getting a paycheck to bring any of this to light.

Stephen Biondo

He didn't bring it up during football season in purpose. He already explained why he didn't bring it up then and it makes perfect sense.

It's interesting all the people who are against him and the language they use. Basically attacking his masculinity, calling him a "diva", "attention whore" or attack his athletic skills. Really sad and pathetic society we have.

Justin Irvine

Kluwe doesn't matter he did not stand up for himself when this allegedly happened and then waited till he was irrelevant and out of the eye of the media before bringing it up.

This comment is laughable. While I admit I cannot know his true motivations, it seems highly likely that CK is more concerned with remaining relevant in any way possible, since he is no longer relevant as an athlete. A champion for human rights, for vocally supporting a more gay-friendly environment in professional sports? Seriously? There are many parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Islamic regions where gays are being put to death. I am not saying that just because you aren't out slaying the biggest dragon that none of the others count, but CK isn't fighting a dragon, by comparison he is torturing an aged pet iguana. In short, he is no hero.

Yes, and if you look at their profiles they all seem to have one thing in common. They are "conservatives"

They get their training from Faux Noise and the likes of Ann Coulter so all of this petulance is to be expected, I suppose. Pathetic as it is.

@senatortombstone Who else stood up against the Vikings about this? Also, should he have ignored that which was smack dab in his face, or bitch about things that are happening in a completely different country, accomplishing nothing?

GMAFB. What an asinine argument.

@senatortombstone Chris Kluwe presumably has many causes, and on this one, he has a lot of visibility. If he can make some waves with a bit of showmanship and PR savvy, better on him. This was a cause he held up while he was still playing, there is no hypocrisy here.

I have a lot of causes too, let's make America great again, become the international standard other countries want to follow. I suspect Mr. Kluwe would not use his visibility to advocate my pet causes: droning the hell out of the Murietta protesters and Bundyanapolis (the drones would not be, and not need to be, armed; just their presence would drive these sociopaths to a frothing bullet eruption) and banning high school and college sports (we have greater priorities than eulogizing Joe Paterno and excusing Jameis Winston), and I'm OK with that.

Everyone must do what they can, dude.

By the way? Frothing Bullet Eruption? Name of my Rebecca Black cover band. Trademarked, all'y'all.
